CEPEC s equestrian facilities will include English and Western riding arenas, eventing and driving courses, polo fields, trails, and an exercise track. Other facilities will include a veterinary and farrier center, a museum, a conference and educational center, club house, and coliseum. The project will be funded and developed in stages with riding trails and arenas constructed during the first phase so that CEPEC can start generating revenue to assist in subsequent development. The entire project is expected to take about seven years to complete and will be funded by donations, grants, and revenue. CEPEC has selected several potential sites for its facilities and has initiated acquisition discussions with land owners. The sites were selected based on their ability to meet the criteria for a world class equestrian center. The final selected site will provide sufficient land for the complex and the preservation of approximately 800 acres as open space for hiking and trail riding. COMPLEX CEPEC will host a variety of national and international level horse shows and events for dressage, jumping, eventing, driving, cutting, reining, barrel racing, vaulting, and polo. The project has the attention of several international organizations such as the Federation Equestrian International and the 450,000 member American Quarter Horse Association - which is considering creating a Northern California horse show circuit because of the quality of facilities CEPEC will be able to offer. When fully operational, CEPEC expects to generate an estimated $250 million annually for Sonoma County by attracting competitors and spectators to equestrian events and visitors to the conference and educational facilities and museum.
The Sonoma State University (SSU) Equestrian Team was founded in 2008 and consists of current students who are dedicated to furthering their knowledge and appreciation of the equestrian world. The team travels throughout Northern California and the U.S. competing with the Intercollegiate Horse Show Association (IHSA) and West Coast Collegiate Eventing League (WCCEL) in Hunt Seat Equitation on the flat and over fences, Western Horsemanship and Reining, and Eventing. Some of the team s direct competitors include equestrian teams from Stanford, UC Davis, Cal Poly San Luis Obispo and UC Berkeley. Throughout the academic year, members participate in workshops, field trips, and clinics focused on various equestrian activities. Carriage Occasions There are currently 25 members on the SSU Equestrian team and close to double that number of alumni with an active interest in the team. With the help of team alumni and generous community supporters, the team is able to provide the opportunity for any student at SSU with the desire to compete in equestrian events the opportunity to do so. Through IHSA students are not required to own their own horse or equipment, everything needed to host a collegiate horse show must be provided by the host college. This helps eliminate the biggest barrier to the equestrian world, money. Chapman Fine Arts Tom & Katherine Chapman The Equestrian Team at SSU strives to provide its students with the opportunity to further their knowledge and appreciation of horses, improve their skills both in and outside the arena, and most importantly encourages each member to live a healthy life-style and maintain a professional, sportsman-like manner. To improve the opportunity to achieve these goals, a more comprehensive academic equine program is being proposed to SSU to include an equestrian center and equine studies degree program. With the continued help from our community, we will be able to make this dream a reality. KRESKY SIGNS, INC. Since 1951
