June 2018 Study Guide Welcome to June almost that time. Camps start this month. This guide hits some special areas of emphasis such as unusual enforcement and force as related to touchback or safety. QUESTIONS TO OMIT: Questions 40, 43,45 all from the APRIL have problems in either presentation or clerical error on the answer sheet. They are forever deleted but can be useful in discussions. NEW RULE UPDATE: The new add on kicking rule has several layers of complexity. This week has been spent trying to get NFHS clarification on enforcement with change of possession and score- like a punt return- illegal kicks or kicks made in an illegal manner. When answers come in will put out on training web site and publish with the July guide. FREE BLOCKING ZONE DOCUMENT: This is on the training web site and will be one of several focuses for the July guide. Please review. GHSA DEFINITION OF A CATCH: A document for the training web site is available and attempts to clarifying what survive the ground means. Both this and free blocking zone document will be made available to all coaches. You will have to answer questions concerning these documents on July quiz. REMINDERS: GHSA Part II is in July this year. A month earlier than in the past. Also there will be a seven man mechanics on-line test in October that must be passed for playoff qualification. ABBREVIATIONS: The usual abbreviations for down/distance, EZ, LOS are in use for this guide.

QUESTIONS 101. 4/10 from the K 10 yard line. Punter K25 fumbles the snap in the EZ. Seeing a potential recovery by R, K25 kicks the ball off the ground from the EZ. The ball crosses the LOS and is downed by K56 at the K22 yard line. Correct officiating of this play is: A. 1/10 for Team R at the K22 yard line. B. Illegal kicking of the ball by K25. R may decline the penalty and assume possession at the K22 yard line OR accept the penalty with Team K being penalized half the distance from the previous spot and replay the down. C. Illegal kicking of the ball by K25. R may decline the penalty and give Team K the ball 1/10 at the K22 as an illegal kick in this manner is a fumble OR accept the penalty which results in a safety. 102. Team B is ahead 16-12 with less than 2 minutes to go in the fourth quarter. Team A ball 3/goal from the B12 yard line. On the play B30 intercepts a forward pass in his own EZ but mistakenly believes if tackled there it will be a safety. He attempts a forward pass from the EZ to teammate B45 who is at the B6 yard line that falls incomplete. What penalty should be enforced and what options given: A. Illegal forward pass after change of possession. If accepted enforced five yards from the previous spot, replay the down with Team A in possession 3/goal from the B7 yard line. B. Illegal forward pass after change of possession. If accepted the penalty will be enforced from the B20 yard line as the crew rules this as a touchback. Team B assumes possession 1/10 from the B15 yard line. C. Illegal forward pass after change of possession. The play

results in a safety. If the penalty is declined the play results in a touchback and Team B will assume possession 1/10 from the B20 yard line. D. Illegal forward pass after change of possession. Whether accepted or declined the play results in a safety. 103. Team K kicks off to begin the second half. The ball hits and is rolling near the sideline and the goal line. R25 races several Team K players to the ball and to avoid recovery kicks the ball off the ground past his own goal line and OOB behind the goal line. Properly officiated: A. This is kicking the ball in an illegal manner. If the penalty is accepted it is enforced from the previous spot as part of loose ball play with a re-kick from the R45 yard line. If the penalty is declined the play is touchback. B. This is kicking the ball in an illegal manner. If accepted it is enforced from the previous spot as part of a loose ball play with a re-kick from the R45 yard line. If declined it is a safety. C. This is kicking the ball in an illegal manner. If accepted it is enforced half the distance to the goal from R2 yard line with Team R then 1/10. If declined it is touchback. D. This is an illegal kick. If accepted it is enforced half the distance to the goal from the R2 yard line. If declined it is a safety. 104. A12 drops back to pass but has yet to release the ball under pressure. Flanker A80 has begun his route having clearly passed B42 who is in single one on one press coverage. B42, realizing he is beaten, pushes A80 in the back and to the ground. A12 then releases the pass which lands where A80 would have been near if the route had been run.
