The 2006 season saw a few dry streaks come to an end for the Penn State field hockey program. First, the Nittany Lions broke a three-game losing streak at the Big Ten Tournament, which dated back to the championship game of the 2003 tournament, by advancing all the way to the championship game and playing three exciting games at the tournament in Ann Arbor, Mich. After that, the Nittany Lions qualified for their second straight NCAA Tournament and their 23rd in program history, tied for the second most in the country, and won their first game at the NCAA Tournament since 2003 as well with a thrilling come-from-behind 4-3 win over North Carolina for their second win over the Tar Heels in 2006 before falling to the eventual national champions from Maryland in the second round in another thrilling game, a narrow 1-0 defeat. Penn State will look to take it one step further in 2007 and it may have all the guns to do so. The Nittany Lions will return nine out of 11 starters from last year s team and its top five scorers from last season. Also returning is three out of four s tarters from the defense as well as goalkeeper, who played every minute in goal for the Nittany Lions last year and along with the defense finished fifth in the country in goals against average and first in the Big Ten. Natalie Blasco All together, Penn State returns the players that were responsible for over 90 percent of the team s 54 goals (49) and for over 90 percent of the team s 152 points (139). Returning to anchor the midfield are seniors and Mallory Weisen. Wood was a first team All-American last year, becoming Penn State s 47th first team All- American in program history. Up front will be both and Allison Scola, who finished 1-2 on the team in goals and points. Banta, in fact, led the Big Ten in goals while Scola led the conference in game-winning goals. Heading up the defense will be three returnees, led by second team All-American, who along with Scola, played a series of exhibition games with the United States Under-21 team in China in March. Long will be joined by sophomores Bethany Marvel and Laura Cahill. Top reserves Natalie Blasco and Britney Long also return. Both started 12 games apiece last year and then they did not start, were usually the first off the bench. Both can play either midfield or up front. Rounding out the returning starters is goalkeeper, a second team All-American who played every minute in goal last year. Penn State will once again play a very challenging scheduled designed to ready Britney Long 2006 Honors and Awards Big Ten Offensive Player of the Week Mallory Weisen (co) - 9/5-9/18 Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week - 9/25-10/16 Womensfieldhockey.com Weekly Honor Roll Mallory Weisen - 9/5-10/2-10/16 NFHCA All-Star All-Big Ten First Team All-Big Ten Second Team Big Ten All-Tournament Team Allison Scola NFHCA All-Mideast Region First Team Carey Maser NFHCA All-Mideast Region Second Team Mallory Weisen NFHCA All-American First Team NFHCA All-American Second Team NFHCA All-American Third Team Womensfieldhockey.com All-American Second Team the Nittany Lions for postseason play. In addition to the always challenging Big Ten Conference games, two of which will be against NCAA tournament teams from last year in Ohio State and Iowa, the Lions will face six other teams that played in NCAAs last year, including the first five games of the year. Visits to Old Dominion and Virginia open up the season, followed by a home game against Connecticut, a game at Princeton and a home game against James Madison are the first five games of the season. A visit to North Carolina is the other NCAA opponent on the schedule in 2007. Penn State will play nine home games and nine away contests but will only have to leave Pennsylvania for seven games, with two road games against in-state opponents. Last year, the Nittany Lions finished fifth in the country in home attendance at AstroTurf Field, which was the first year that the NCAA kept track of attendance figures for field hockey.
