KC plated its final run in the second with Lorenzo Cain s 11th home run of the season...that was more than enough for Yordano Ventura, whose week started by getting roughed up by Pittsburgh a week ago tonight and then subsequently optioned to Omaha (AAA) only to return to the big league roster a day later when Jason Vargas suffered a season-ending elbow injury...ventura worked 7.0 strong innings allowing just a run on six hits with no walks and five strikeouts...franklin Morales and Luke Hochevar ran KC s bullpen scoreless streak to 14.1 in a row with a perfect inning apiece...kendrys Morales was 3-for-4 with a run scored, while Cain and Alex Rios each had a pair of knocks...the win returned the Royals to a season-high 21 games over.500 and to their high-water 7 1/2-game advantage over the Twins, who lost two of three to New York. THERE S A NEW KID IN TOWN--Kansas City dipped its toes into the deadline week waters by snagging Cincinnati ace Johnny Cueto in exchange for a trio of minor league lefthanded hurlers, Brandon Finnegan, John Lamb and Cody Reed...the 29-year old Cueto went 7-6 with a 2.62 ERA in 19 starts for the Reds this season...he ranked eighth in the National League in innings pitched (130.2), ninth in ERA, fourth in opponents batting average (.196), fourth in WHIP (0.98) and is tied for 12th in strikeouts (120)...he earned his seventh victory of the season on Saturday night in Coors Field, tossing 8.0 shutout innings in Cincy s 5-2 win over the Rockies...since the start of 2011, Cueto s 2.51 ERA in second-lowest among Major League pitchers, trailing only Clayton Kershaw s 2.16 mark. TWO-OUT TALLIES ROLL AGAIN--One of the strong suits of Kansas City s offense this year has been its success with two outs in an inning and that was never more evident than in the wins over the Astros on Saturday and Sunday...KC snapped Saturday s deadlock in the 10th inning with a two-out knock from Alcides Escobar only to be trumped yesterday when all five runs off of Dallas Keuchel were scored with two away...the Royals lead the Majors with a.283 team batting average in two-out situations, while ranking first in the A.L. in two-out slugging pct. (.437), two-out on-base pct. (.344) and ranks second in runs (179)...Lorenzo Cain leads all A.L. hitters with a.390 two-out batting average, while Kendrys Morales and Eric Hosmer are tied for fifth with.331 marks...morales is first in two-out RBI (34) and doubles (11), with Cain ranking third in slugging (.619). PEN ON ANOTHER ROLL--KC s pen ran its current scoreless streak to 14.1 innings with 1-2-3 appearances by Franklin Morales and Luke Hochevar to wrap up yesterday s win...dating back to Hochevar s 1.2-scoreless innings a week ago tonight vs. the Pirates, the Kansas City relief corps has allowed only one earned run in its last 23.2 innings for a 0.38 ERA, while holding the opposition to a.197 average (14-for-71) with 22 strikeouts...the Royals have baseball s best relief ERA at 2.06, while the Cardinals are next at 2.32...Kansas City has a 20-5 record out of the pen, easily the best winning pct. in the Majors at.800, with the Yankees next at 17-9 (.654). EXTENDED JOURNEY COMMENCES--Tonight opens an 11-day, 10-game journey that features a pair of Central Division stops sandwiched around a 4-game trip north of the border...following this stop in Cleveland, the club will then head north to Toronto and a 4-game set that runs Thursday thru Sunday with day games in the final two contests...the Royals will close the journey with an off day in Detroit a week from today before taking on the Tigers in a 3-game set at Comerica Park on August 4-6...KC will start the journey with the second best road winning pct. in the American League at.556 (25-20). SERIES LY SPEAKING--The Royals have gone 5-1 in their last six series, the lone series loss the one-game stop in St. Louis last Thursday...over a longer stretch, KC has gone 7-2 with a split in its last nine sets contested...on the year, the Royals have gone 20-9 with four splits in the 33 series played. WADING THROUGH THE OPPOSITION--Relief ace Wade Davis, who worked in his first career All-Star Game with a scoreless inning on July 24, fired a 1-2-3 eighth inning against Houston on Saturday night...davis has allowed two runs in 42.2 innings in 2015 for a miniscule 0.42 ERA...he now has 15 wins since the start of 2014, making him the winningest reliever in the Major Leagues over the last two seasons...since the dawn of the 2014 season, Wade has a 15-3 record with 12 rescues and a 0.78 ERA (10 earned runs in 114.2 innings) and limiting opponents to a.150 average (60-for-400)...since June 27 of last year, Wade has been even better, going 10-1 with 12 saves, a 0.56 ERA (5 ER in 81.0 IP)...he has now worked 124.2 consecutive innings without allowing a home run, the longest-active streak in the Major Leagues...Davis homerless streak dates back to August 24, 2013, which was the date of his last start. THE BRUISE CREW--The Royals continue to lead the American League with 51 hit by pitches...alex Gordon, who has been out nearly three weeks and will remain out for some time due to a left groin strain, is tied for the A.L. lead with 12 plunkings, one more than his previous career high established last year...mike Moustakas was hit for the ninth and 10th times this year in last Monday night s game vs. Pittsburgh and has climbed to fourth in the league...last year s club was hit 53 times, but the 2015 Royals are currently on a pace to get his 85 times, which would be four shy of the club record set in 2007 (89). BUSY STRETCH--The Royals are currently 7-4 through 11 games of this post-all-star Game stretch of 18 games over a 17-day span...kansas City s next off day is slated for a week from today when Kansas City will get a day to relax in Birmingham, MI, between stops in Toronto and Detroit...the Royals still have one other makeup on their agenda, returning to Chicago on Monday, September 28, for a one-night affair in Wrigley Field to thanks to a May 30 storm on the north side...fortunately, KC was already heading to Chi-town for a visit that starts the next night on the south side of town. A ROOM WITH A VIEW--Today marks the 78th day that Kansas City has either shared or stood alone atop the A.L. Central in 2015 well ahead of the 33 such days during the 2014 campaign...this year s squad opened the season with a 7-game winning streak and the closest KC has come back to.500 has been five games at 7-2 and 8-3...dating back to July 22 of last year, the Royals have the best record in the Majors at 100-61. NED A ROYAL RECORD HOLDER--The 16th full-time manager in Royals history, Ned Yost, became the winningest skipper in franchise annals with #411 on June 18 vs. Milwaukee, passing Royals Hall of Famer, Whitey Herzog, who won 410 games from 1975-79, while Ned is now 432-440...Yost passed the late Dick Howser for the #2 spot on June 8 in Minnesota...since the All-Star break of 2013, Ned has guided the Royals to the best record in the American League at 191-138 for a.581 winning pct...also the all-time leader in games managed in Kansas City with 872, this is Ned s second stint as a big league manager after nearly six years at the helm for Milwaukee (2003-2008), compiling a 457-502 record with the Brew Crew including a 166-146 mark in his last two seasons...yost s 889 total wins as a big league manager rank 69th all time and now only five shy of Gaston for 68th, while Ned s 1,831 games managed are 64th on the all-time list, six behind Paul Richards for 63rd. vs. Indians (2015) vs. Indians (career) On Road (career) Anderson (career) Bauer (career) Player AVG AB H HR RBI AVG AB H HR RBI AVG AB H HR RBI AVG AB H HR RBI AVG AB H HR RBI Butera.000 3 0 0 0 Cain.206 34 7 1 3 Cuthbert Dyson.167 18 3 0 0 Escobar.273 22 6 0 2 Hosmer.361 36 13 3 13 Infante.219 32 7 0 5 Morales.314 35 11 2 8 Moustakas.417 36 15 0 3 Orlando.143 7 1 0 0 Perez.233 30 7 0 2 Rios.125 8 1 0 0.167 72 12 0 4.255 153 39 2 17.261 153 40 0 9.288 274 79 2 30.283 272 77 10 49.275 363 100 5 45.291 196 57 8 30.272 254 69 7 39.143 7 1 0 0.250 200 50 3 21.241 410 99 12 52.196 363 71 6 36.284 814 231 12 87.248 472 117 0 23.265 1726 457 12 150.280 1305 365 36 168.278 2595 721 51 278.266 1477 393 59 212.245 1133 278 35 118.219 64 14 2 5.276 976 269 34 124.269 3212 864 71 367.273 11 3 1 2 - - - -.333 3 1 0 1.455 11 5 0 1.200 10 2 0 1.364 11 4 0 2.250 12 3 0 0.250 12 3 0 0.077 13 1 0 0.222 9 2 0 2 Starting Pitchers Breakdown Total KC Avg.
