ISSUE #11 15 JUNE 2009 Rondebosch Hockey Herald E-mail Circulation is currently 278 Hockey Notice Board. Rondebosch Board of Governors Elections, 24 June 2009 at 17:45 for 1800 Venue: Memorial Hall, Rondebosch Boys High School Parents are earnestly requested to attend the BOG elections as your involvement is essential to enable a representative election of 7 Parents to the Governing Body, to take place. 1

Rondebosch Hockey - Astro Opinion Poll results On behalf of the Rondebosch Hockey Supporters Committee - a very big thank to all Hockey Parents for your tremendous response to the opinion poll reflecting your wishes regarding the location of any possible future Rondebosch Astroturf facilities as well as indicating support for the Committee. The unanimous opinion of the 140 Rondebosch Parents who responded, was that the Parents, WITHOUT EXCEPTION, indicated that they wished to see any future Astroturf on grounds over which Rondebosch had exclusive control. No votes were received for placing a future Astro on WPCC premises. The Committee can, with confidence, engage with the School and Board of Governors with the knowledge that there is overwhelming support from the Hockey Parents for an additional Astroturf on School controlled grounds, to ensure that there is sufficient Astro time available for players of all age groups and all levels of expertise. This will signal that Hockey ranks on a par with the other significant Bosch Sporting Codes. All Rondebosch Parents Please we need your support for this Fundraiser. Funds are for Bosch Hockey Coaching and a Hockey Social Outreach to Langa Hockey Club Important Announcement. There are still 100 tickets waiting to be sold. Without these being sold the "profit" component of this fundraising drive will be diluted. Payment for the tickets / tables that have been reserved MUST take place at the Rondebosch - Bishops Matches on Friday 19 June 2009 at Bishops. Payment by Cash or Cheque ifo Rondebosch Boys High School only please. The most support so far has been from Parents of the 1st Team. There has been very little support from the following teams:- U14A and U14B, U16A and U16B, U19B and U19C There are still the following seats available 8 Seater Tables - 7 Tables 10 Seater Tables - 2 Tables Limelight Box - 5 single seats Single Seats - still clusters around the Theatre Parents - if you cannot attend as a family, what about buying a ticket for your son and arrange for a table for a group of hockey boys. 2

Committee Members will be on site. It is essential then to reserve your son's ticket with Cindy Giger before the Bishops Match when payment becomes due. If it is impossible to attend, please consider donating the price of a ticket (R150-00) to a good cause - contact Cindy Giger. Cindy Giger 082 745 5831 cindy.giger@mweb.co.za Rondebosch Hockey Parents Committee presents Learning the rules of the game Last week s answer to Quiz No 5 Question: At a short corner the ball is pushed to the attacking side where the stopper brings the ball into the circle and striker hits the ball at goal where it collides with the upright standing goalie on his helmet and finds the back of the net. Is it a goal or not? Answer: No goal. If the first shot at goal is a hit (as opposed to a push, flick or scoop), the ball must cross the goal-line, or be on a path which would have resulted in it crossing the goal-line, at a height of not more than 460 mm (the height of the backboard). This week s question - Quiz No 6 The goalie is injured and during the incident causes a penalty corner to be awarded against his team. His injuries force him to leave the field. No substitute goalie is available. What must the defending team do to face the short corner? Thanks to Mr Kevin Winter for the quiz questions. 3

The game turned out to be a closely fought contest, but yet again, the RHBS 2nd team were just too good. The first half proved to be rather boring with RBHS not playing our best hockey. An inspiring talk by our coach sparked us into gear and we scored two unanswered goal. When Wynberg tried to counter, our halfs stood up to the plate defended with relative ease. Well done oaks. 2-0 the end score. Aidan Morris (Captain) Rondebosch 3rd Team vs. Wynberg 3rd Team 09/05/2009 9

This past Tuesday the 3rd side lost their unbeaten streak. In a disappointing performance we struggled to play the match at our level. The first half started slowly, and we went into the break disappointed knowing that we needed to up our game if we wanted to take it. The second half was slightly better but when Wynberg got their first goal our heads dropped and we were unable to lift ourselves. The match ended 2-0. We were disappointed with the result but we learned a lot from this match and are keen for the next fixture against Bishops Sebastian Bosman Rondebosch 4th Team vs. Wynberg 4th Team - 02/06/2009 Rondebosch U16A Team vs. Wynberg U16A Team 10/06/2009 Rondebosch U16B Team vs. Wynberg U16B Team 09/06/2009 Rondebosch U16C Team vs. Wynberg U16C Team - 09/06/2009 The match against Wynberg took place on Tuesday 9 June, on their home astro. We all played well. Wynberg wanted the match but we wanted it more! The goals were scored by Michael Harris and Craig Thomas, which put us in the lead by 2-0 Esmond Schnehage (U16C Captain) Rondebosch U16D Team vs. Wynberg U16D Team - 02/06/2009 Rondebosch U16E Team vs. Wynberg U16E Team - 03/06/2009 Rondebosch U14A Team vs. Wynberg U14A Team 05/06/2009 10

Rondebosch U14A Team vs. Fairmont U14A Team - 09/06/2009 Rondebosch U14B Team vs. Wynberg U14B Team 10/06/2009 Rondebosch U14C Team vs. Wynberg U14C Team 11/06/2009 This was our second match on astro and we were a bit nervous at first. We were aiming to get the Triple Crown in this game (SACS, Bishops and Wynberg). The first half we went on strong and kept our defense tight and our attack strong. We managed to get a few shots at goal but we were unsuccessful. The second half we let our guard down a bit and were lucky that our goal keeper Matthew Bramwell could save their good shots. We nearly won this game but they were a good team. Our teamwork in our team keeps improving with every game.
