We ve heard great things about the course from associate head coach Jake Amos, who was an assistant for the Boilermakers for two seasons (2014-16). Obviously we re going to rely heavily on his knowledge of Kampen. It looks to be a strong field, and we ll have to play well to advance. HISTORY AT NCAA REGIONALS The Gamecocks are making their 26th trip to NCAA Regionals. Since head coach Bill McDonald s arrival in 2006-2007, Carolina has missed regionals just one time. A top-five finish at the Kampen Course will be the Gamecocks fifth-straight trip to the NCAA Championship, improving a program record which was set last season. Kyle Thompson, who now plays professionally, is the only player in school history to earn medalist honors at NCAA Regionals. He won individual titles in 1999 and 2001. Carolina s lone team title at regionals came in 2007 after the squad shot a course record 44-under at the NCAA West Regional at Karsten Golf Course in Tempe, Ariz. The upset-minded Gamecocks came into the event seeded 11th. REGIONAL FIELD No. 4 Florida is the top seed in Carolina s regional. Big Ten champion Illinois is seeded second, Mountain West champion UNLV is seeded third and fellow SEC member Auburn is seeded fourth. The Gamecocks have squared off against five opponents in the regional during the regular season, posting a 7-3 record with head-tohead finishes in front of Auburn (3), Augusta (2), Purdue (1) and Richmond (1). The field is deep in West Lafayette with eight of the 13 teams ranked in the top-50 of the latest Golfstat rankings. Augusta (52) and St. Mary s (57) are slotted just outside the top-50 in the polls. RECAPPING THE SEC CHAMPIONSHIP South Carolina shot an even par 280 in the third round of the 2017 SEC Championship to climb four spots on the leaderboard and finish fifth in stroke play at 9-over par. The Gamecocks advanced to the first ever SEC Match Play Quarterfinals with their top eight finish in stroke play. Carolina gave No. 6 Florida all it could handle in match play, but fell 3-2. Sophomores Scott Stevens (2&1) and Ryan Stacher (3&2) notched wins for the Gamecocks. Despite an arm injury, team captain Keenan Huskey T-9th at 3-under in stroke play. The top-10 finish was his sixth of the 2016-17 campaign, marking a new single-season high. Freshman Jamie Wilson finished T-16th at 1-over after shooting a new career 18-hole low 66 in the final round of stroke play. RECAPPING THE SPRING The Gamecocks had five top-five finishes in seven events during the spring slate, highlighted by the team s first win of the season at the Hootie at Bulls Bay Intercollegiate March 26-28 in Awendaw, S.C. Carolina, who won the tournament for the third-straight season, shot 844 (-20). Keenan Huskey (T-3rd) and Jamie Wilson (T-5th) paced the Gamecocks with top-five individual finishes. Huskey led Carolina with a 70.30 18-hole scoring average in the spring. Sophomore Scott Stevens was second on the team with a 71.53 average. The duo combined to shoot 20 rounds in the 60s and 34 rounds (17 each) of par or better during the 2016-17 regular season. Huskey had three top-five finishes, while Stevens had two runner-up medalist showings. Wilson, who took home SEC Freshman of the Week honors twice, has been in the lineup every tournament this spring. He s posted a 72.47 scoring average in the team s six spring events. His 10 rounds of par or better and four rounds in the 60s rank third on the team. RECAPPING THE FALL South Carolina finished in the top-five in three of its four fall events. The team took 10th (875, +11) at the Carpet Capital Collegiate on Sept. 9-11, fifth at the Maui Jim Intercollegiate (839, -13) on Sept. 23-25, second at the Camden Collegiate Invitational (859, +19) on Oct. 22-23 and fifth at the Ka anapali Collegiate Classic (840, -12) on Nov. 4-6. Sophomore Scott Stevens and junior Keenan Huskey, Carolina s two returnees from the team s magical NCAA run last spring, paced the Gamecocks throughout the fall season. Stevens finished the fall with a 69.58 stroke average, three tiop-10 individual finishes, eight rounds at par or better and six rounds in the 60s. His best individual finish was at the Maui Jim Intercollegiate, when he earned runner-up medalist honors after shooting 198 (-15). The low tally was the third-best 54-hole score in program history. Huskey finished just behind Stevens with a 69.67 stroke average. He finished in the top-20 individually in all RECORDS Career Scoring Average (Min. 60 Rounds & Two Years) 1. McDonald captured a school-record five wins in 2014-15 and snagged his latest victory at the 2017 Hootie at Bulls Bay Intercollegiate on March 28. It was the team s first win of the 2016-17 season and its third straight year bringing home the team title at Bulls Bay Golf Club. 2007 NCAA West Regional Champions South Carolina finishes 44-under-par to set course record en route to program s first regional title TEMPE, Ariz. Behind a record-breaking performance, the South Carolina men s golf team claimed a two-stroke victory over UCLA to win the 2007 NCAA West Regional at Karsten Golf Course (Par 72, 7,057 yards) in Tempe, Ariz. The Gamecocks recorded a three-round score of 820 to finish 44 strokes under par and set a course record. The guys were focused all week and nothing fazed them, South Carolina associate head coach Bill McDonald said. I kept talking about winning the tournament, not so much advancing (to the NCAA finals). I wanted them to taste victory. I felt like we were good enough to win earlier in the season. We had some opportunities and didn t get it done. I am proud of the effort they gave. South Carolina entered the final round one stroke behind regional leader and No. 4 UCLA. The Gamecocks shot 10-under par (278) as a team Saturday to beat the Bruins, who were seven under (281). No. 10 Southern California and No. 18 Arizona State, the regional host, shared third place with a final score of 824 (-40). Fellow Southeastern Conference team Vanderbilt caught fire on Saturday, finishing the third round at 21 under to surge into fifth place. It was the first regional title for the Gamecocks, who reached the top 10 in three of the previous four NCAA Regionals. In 1999, South Carolina fell just shy of the East Regional title, finishing second in Barrington, R.I., despite Kyle Thompson s individual victory at the event. The Gamecocks, who entered the tournament as the No. 11 seed, held a slight lead on UCLA for most of the final day, and freshman George Bryan IV s strong finish secured the win. The last player on the course for South Carolina, Bryan eagled No. 17 and sank a 40-foot putt for birdie on No. 18. The Chapin, S.C, product tied for 10th individually with a three-day total of 68-67-69=204 (-12). His tournament total of 204 tied him for fourth place in school history for a three-round individual score and was the best individual performance ever by a Gamecock in regional play. Bryan s 10th-place finish was the best by a Carolina golfer since Thompson won the 2001 NCAA West Regional in Corvalis, Ore. Sophomore Florian Fritsch and junior Mark Anderson tied for 16th on the individual leader board after posting three-day totals of 206 (-10), which tied for the eighth-best three-round effort in school history. Anderson closed with a 70 (-2) on the final 18 holes, while Fritsch carded a 71 (-1) Saturday. Sophomore Mark Silvers III fired a final round 69, and junior Warren Thomas posted a 70 on the final 18 holes. Silvers and Thomas both tied for 43rd with a three-day total score of 211 (-5). I noticed early on that both teams (South Carolina and UCLA) seemed tight, McDonald said. It really helped us that Mark Silvers got off to such a good start. He made a couple of birdies early and made the turn at 32 (four under par). I think when our guys started to see the board and that we had a lead, that really helped. We got a burst of energy on the back nine knowing we had a chance to win. As a team, South Carolina opened with a George Bryan IV NCAA HISTORY Warren Thomas, Mark Silvers III, coach Bill McDonald, Florian Fritsch, Mark Anderson, George Bryan IV, assistant coach Michael Burcin. State 278-277-284=839 Oregon State 281-275-283=839 round of 273 on Thursday before shooting 269 on Friday. Those scores are among the five lowest rounds in school history. The team victory was the first for South Carolina since capturing the title at the 2005 Bank of Tennessee Intercollegiate (Oct. 15-16). In 2007, the Gamecocks previous best performance was fourth place on three occasions. I told the team in a meeting a little while ago that this will mean more to them as the years go by, McDonald said of winning the title. It will really mean a lot. To me, it gives our program validity. Instead of just talking about what we want to do, we went out and did it. It will really help from a recruiting and coaching standpoint. The more they win, the more they will believe and expect to play this way. That will develop tradition and have a long-lasting effect.
