AUDTNG COMMTTEE'S. REPORT. To the President and Board of Managers of. the World'3 Fair for ndiana: Your Committee on Auditing begs leave to submit the following final report: We have examined from time to time the duplicate vouchers on file in the office of the Secretary of the Board and in the office of the Executive Commissioner, also the several reports of F. J. Hayden, Treasurer of the Board. These examinations embrace every item of expenditure from warrant 1, issued June 1, 1891, down to warrant 1265, issued December 18, 1894, which is the last warrant issued prior to the date of this present report. We have examined with great care the final report of the Treasurer, dated December 20, 1894, which (j)f all final report is a well digested and complete summary previous reports. We have examined the vouchers, compared them with the warrants and again compared them, with the statement of expenditures as set forth in. said final report, and find that the same correspond exactly, both in amount and date with the original allowances. We have also gone over the footings of the several columns and find the same correct, and that his report has been compiled with scrupulous care ana is correct and complete in every particular, showing clearly tl1e several amounts received by him from the Treasurer of State or made by this Board, and from other sources, and the various sums paid out by him on warrants drawn by the President of the Board under the order of the Execuwve Committee, and of the Board of Managers. We find that.he whole amount received by him from the State as per appropriations of the General Assembly an4 from sale of glass to be $125,900, and the entire expenditure up to date, December 20, 1894, to be $123,666.55, leaving a cash balance in his hands at that date?f 6- WORLD'S FAR.

$2,233.45, which will be, to a small extent, reduced by some expenses contingent in making- final settlement.. Your committee further find that there is a cash balance of $463.37 remaining unexpended of the amount contributed by the schools of the State for educational purposes. n making this final report your committee feels that it should again call your attention to the manner in which the duties of Treasurer have been discharged by Hon. Fred. J. Hayden. ts work has brought this committee into close contact with his office and his methods in the management of its affairs, and we notice the extreme care and completeness with which the duties of the position have been discharged, and we again repeat our former recommendation that a just compensation be appropriated to him for his conscientious and efficient labors in the interest of the State as Treasurer of this Board for the past three and one-half years. ndianapolis, nd., December 20, 1894. REPORT OF COMMTTEE ON SALE OF BULDNG. NDANAPOLS, ND., Dec. 20, 1894. RON. J. L. CAMPBELL, President of the Board of Manag.ers of World's Fair: Your committee appointed to make sale' of the ndiana building in Jackson Park, Chicago, and to provide for the removal of same, begs leave to report that in pursuance of the act of the General Assembly, passed at its last session, your Committee proceeded to advertise the same. for sale in six of the daily papers of Chicago and ndianapolis, as follows: Chicago Tribune, Chicago Record, Chicago Journal, Chicago Mail, ndianapolis Sentinel and Journal, and further issued hand bills which were circulated throughout the States of llinois and ndiana, inviting proposals for the purchase of the building constructed by the State and for the removal of the same from Jackson Park, prior to the 1st day of May, 1894. Said proposals to be submitted on or before the 28th day of October, 1893, which date was postponed on' that day to the 16th day of November, 1893, no satisfactory bids having at first been submitted. That on the 16th day of November, 1893, the following bids were presented: TENDERS FOR BULDNG, OCTOBER 31, Sivers & Fernley. For building without glass... For building with glass... Globe Wrecking and Salvage Co. Offer to remove building for it and.... $200 00 625 00 205 00,

For building and cleaning grounds 300 00 For plate glass in building 900 00 But your committee finally accepted the bid of the Chicago House Wrecking Co., at $300 for the building, and $9QO for the plate glass in the same,' this being, by far, the most favor. ble bid received. The purchase price, $300, was paid in cash and your committee took from said company a bond in the sum of $5,000 conditioned for the removal of said building and the clearing off the grounds on which it stood before May 1,1894, according to the contract between the ndiana Board of Managers and the World's Columbian Exposition Co., and this bond was further secured by said company giving to the State.of ndiana a mortgage on real estate in the city of Chicago, which mortgage was duly recorded.. The contract price of $300, paid in cash, has been paid by the Treasurer, Fred. J. Hayden, into the Treasury of the State, as appears by the report of said Treasurer of the Board. Your committee further reports that a large ainount of personal property used in the display of the various exhibits of the State, and the furniture used in the ndiana State Building -/ /, ~. have 1 ments n ( tained to ade- Park dreds sixtee May) wrec1 folo sold. 85 have been returned to~the Agricultural and Geological departments and the benevolent institutions of the State. n order to meet obvious objections to the small amount obtained for the State Building, your committee thinks it proper to add that, by the original contract made between the South Park Commissioners and the Exposition Company, the hundreds of buildings covering Jackson Park and costing over sixteen millions of dollars, were to be cleared off on or before May 1, 1894, and this precipitated upon the market a mass of wreckage far beyond the demands of the market and hence followed the trifling amounts for which- all the buildings were. sold. Most of the States willingly surrendered their buildings on the sole consideration that their removal be effected within the time limited. While the price obtained for the ndiana building was g-rossly out of proportion to its cost, yet the State did much better in its sale than did the Exposition Company or any of the other States that were represented on the grou nds of Jackson Park. FRED J. HAYDEN, THOS. E. GARVN, SD CONGER, Committee.
