From the Clubhouse From the Desk of Jesse K. Thorpe, General Manager Dear Members, With the holidays behind us, we move to new opportunities in the New Year. As you review the Dunescape in the coming months you will note some subtle and not-so-subtle changes designed to make the publication more informative and more enjoyable for our membership. One notable change already in place is the two-page calendar section. We found that there were so many events being calendared that a one page calendar couldn t provide enough space to list them all. We hope you will find this small but useful change to be helpful in planning. Additionally we have been efforting the inclusion of more photos of members participating in the many events at the Club. Who knows, maybe your picture will be in one of our future editions! There are many great things going on at the Club and we don t always tell our story as well as we should. Take the Toys for Tots drive in December- anyone who saw the hoard of gifts brought in just before representatives of the Marines came to collect them would have been amazed at the quantity and variety of donations- Hammock Dunes does a great deal in the community because we can kudos to all. So please check out the many communications we send announcing events to come, or events already completed. These things start to tell the story of the Club. On January 13, Steve Graves, President of Creative Golf Marketing will come to the Club to present the details of the Club s marketing program for 2016. The event will feature a complimentary heavy hors d oeuvres buffet before Steve s presentation. Membership recruitment is the most important activity we need to focus on in 2016 and we need your assistance and participation to have success. See you around the Club! Jesse Sincere Thanks The Employees of Hammock Dunes Club would like to thank the membership for their generosity throughout the year and especially during the Holiday season. It is our pleasure to serve you. We wish you a Happy, Healthy New Year. WINTER 2016 DINING HOURS... The Memorial Tournament will be held on January 6 this year, our first Wednesday play day into the New Year. We encourage everyone to participate in remembrance of the wonderful ladies we have lost this year and in years past. Also, please note that the Mid Year Meeting has been moved up to January 13. The Golf Shop will be sponsoring an exciting Trunk Show that will be held during/after the luncheon. They will have various vendors showing off their new season attire available to pre-order. Golf News News from the Golf Shop... Happy New Year! Thank you so much for making 2015 such a great year. As we reported last month we will be attending the PGA Merchandise Show in Orlando January 26-29. At that time we will see the newest technologies and offerings in golf apparel and equipment. Our plan is to show you that new technology in the following months. I ll be back to you with a report on the innovative things we saw. As we have in previous years, we will be scheduling a series of Demo Days in February and beyond for you to see the product from the various vendors. Please take a moment to look at your existing equipment. Specifically, I would ask that you take a look at the condition of your grips the next time that you play or practice. It is time again for our annual Get a Grip Sale. In that regard we will be offering a 10% off grip special for the month of January only. The sale will be on our in stock grips. We hope that you will take advantage of this offer. It s time again to start making your winter instruction plans. As we have for the previous couple of seasons, we will soon be conducting a series of winter clinics that will be open to the first 12 people that sign up. We wish to spend as much quality teaching time with each person in the clinic so we limit it to that number. Stay tuned for emails with further details about times, clinic topics, and other logistics. Again, Happy New Year and we hope to see you on the course soon. Brad Myers, PGA, CCM - Director of Golf Hammock Dunes Pro-Am 2015 Wrap-Up Another successful Pro-Am is behind us! Many thanks to the Pro-Am Committee and all the Volunteers who made this 4th year such a great event. We are proud to recognize Belleview Biltmore GC of Belleair, Florida as the Team Champion. They will have the privilege of displaying the Victoria Cup at their Club for the coming year. Zach Lomaka of Belleview Biltmore GC was the Professional winner for the third year after shooting an impressive 68 at the Links Course. Congratulations Zach. One of the best parts of the tournament is that we were able to make a donation of $3,000 to the Stuart F. On the Courts Croquet News... And the Games roll on... and the years roll by from one of the very first Croquet Clubs formed at Wimbledon, London in 1868, to our prestigious Hammock Dunes Croquet Association in Palm Coast, Florida, USA. This sport is enjoyed world-wide. The challenge, fun and camaraderie are proven with all our activities. As we start this New Year we recognize the dedicated work of our Board and Executive officers continuing to inspire creative leadership. Without the support of our Croquet Membership this would all be for naught. "Merci Beaucoup" to one and all!! On the Courts Pros Corner: Serves There are three kinds of serves: Flat serve, Slice serve and Topspin serve. Basics of Serve - The fundamentals of serve start with The Four Bs: base, balance, back-scratch position and ball toss. To achieve a correct base, your feet should be one shoulder s width apart with your left foot at an angle toward the target box and your right foot parallel to the baseline. There are multiple ways to improve your tennis serve. Here are the three basic serves commonly used by tennis players. Flat Serve - Once you establish a good base, focus on the location of the ball toss. The ball toss should be at the one o clock position slightly in front of you. Slice Serve - Slice serve is an arm serve, so you will not have the hip and shoulder rotation that you have in the flat serve. You will also turn your grip over a little more counter clockwise. The ball is tossed at two o clock, and you swing up and across the ball. Topspin Serve - The topspin serve is similar to the slice serve in many aspects. Throw the ball toss at eleven o clock and a little closer to your body. If it lands, it should hit you on the left shoulder. This is going to be an all arm serve. Swing up at the ball making contact between seven and nine o clock and push the racquet through the ball. By now, hopefully you have signed up and are ready to take the Challenge. Remember this is not a diet!!!! This is changing your lifestyle eating habits, moving and exercising more. GUIDELINES FOR EATING OUT & SPECIAL OCCASIONS Choose restaurants with a widely varied menu so you can select foods that are included in your eating plan. Never go to a party hungry. Eat a healthy snack (i.e. apple) before going. Go out to enjoy the people more than the foods. Talk-Talk-Talk--eat less. Set ground rules before eating out. Decide to eat smaller portions and decline high fat foods. Eat in MODERATION PLEASE. At a buffet, look at whole table and decide what you want. Then fill a plate ONE time and NO SECONDS. Always eat slowly!!! Put your fork down and chew your food before your next bite. Watch the alcohol! Always drink a glass of water before you order that first drink. Drink it slowly please. Drink water along with that drink!! Avoid items that are fried or creamed, gravies, cheese sauces and etc. Order meat or fish broiled or baked and choose poultry (no skin or take it off. Pass on the bread if possible. Ask for your salad dressings on the side. Pass on high sugar sweets...choose fruits instead. If you know you are going out for dinner have a good breakfast and a lighter lunch. If hungry before you go, eat that apple or vegetable or drink a glass of water. The water and the apple will make you less hungry when you get where you are going. Last but not least, start moving more or exercising more. It will help to burn those calories!!! Remember: 3500 Calories equals 1 Pound of Fat **To lose 1 pound per week, decrease your daily calories by 500. 500 x 7 days per week = 3500 calories **To lose 1 pound per week, decrease your daily calories by 250 and burn 250 calories walking or running. 500 x 7 = 3500 cal. Good Luck on your Challenge!!!! Each month we will have more tips to help you reach your Weight Loss Goals. Need help, Ryan and I will be available in the Fitness Center. Be happy to help in anyway. Specifically about the University of Washington eight-oared crew that represented the U.S. in the 1936 Olympics, the novel draws on the diaries, photos and memories of the team members, all of whom came from lower middle class families, struggled through the Depression, and learned to work together as a team. Another back-story concerns the historical context with Hitler, the Nazis and their treatment of the Jews. Taken together, it is an irresistible tale about beating the odds and finding hope in desperate times. The Killdeer resembles a sand piper but is a member of the Plover group. They seem to scurry here and there just out of our reach. Their name comes from the cry that they make kill-dee. Technically they are shore birds but mostly you will find them in open fields, vacant lots or along gravel roads. Killdeer nest on the ground using little or no nesting materials. Their eggs look so much like small rocks they blend unseen into the landscape. A baby Killdeer hatches, full feathered, bright eyed and with their running shoes on. This is known as precocial, ripe beforehand. They stay in the egg two weeks longer then babies that are born without feathers. Their parents are known for their famous broken wing act to lead predators away from their nest. We meet Mondays from 1-3 p.m., at Judy Walters, 3 San Gabriel Lane. Bring a Bible and purchase your own study guide if you wish ($7).
