UT-ARLINGTON SERIES RECORD Saturday marks the 51st men s basketball meeting of the two universities with Sam Houston holding a 31-19 edge over the Mavericks. The Bearkats stand 19-5 against UTA in Huntsville. SHSU won 67-64 in the pair s first meeting in Arlington on Jan. 23. The Bearkats have won their last 10 games with UTA in Johnson Coliseum. The Mavericks last win in Huntsville came in 125-123 triple overtime thriller. UT-Arlington has won two of the last four meetings, however, defeating Sam Houston in Arlington 95-85 last year and knocking the Kats out of the 2008 Southland tournament with a 72-66 defeat in Katy. SOUTHLAND CHAMPS WITH ONE LOSS Eleven times a Southland Conference champion has ended league play with just one loss. The most recent have included Northwestern State (15-1 in 2006), Nicholls (15-1 in 1998 and 17-1 in 1995), and Louisiana-Monroe (17-1 in 1993, 13-1 in 1991 and 13-1 in 1990). Sam Houston State won its first 11 Southland games this year. UTSA had to go to overtime to do it, but the Roadrunners ended the streak in San Antonio last Saturday 91-90. The 11 consecutive victories were Sam Houston s longest streak since the team moved up to the NCAA Division I level in 1987. The 2003 conference championship team rolled up 10 consecutive victories before the string was ended in a road game at Louisiana-Monroe. The 1986 Bearkats ran off 20 consecutive victories on the way to a berth in the NCAA Division II regionals. The 1973 Sam Houston squad went 28-0 before falling in the second round of the NAIA National Tournament at Kansas City. LAST GAME Corey Allmond scored 22 points inluding five 3-pointers to lead Sam Houston to a 74-56 men s basketball victory over McNeese State Wednesday night at Johnson Coliseum. With the victory, the Bearkats clinched the No. 1 seed at the State Farm Southland Conference Tournament and at least a share of the Southland Conference regular season title. Ashton Mitchell added 12 points and Preston Brown scored 11 for Sam Houston. With his first trey of the game, Mitchell became the 21st men s basketball player at SHSU to score 1,000 career points. The Southland title is the third regular season Southland championship for the Bearkats, all under head coach Bob Marlin. McNeese State was led by Stephan Martin with 13 points and Diego Kapelan with 11. The Cowboys held two early leads, but Sam Houston broke away quickly, building a 45-19 lead at intermission and going up by as many as 31 points in the second half. LAST MEETING WITH UT-ARLINGTON Josten Crow drove for a layup with 15 seconds left and Gilberto Clavell added a free throw with four ticks remaining as Sam Houston held off a late UT-Arlington rally to win 67-64 at Texas Hall in Arlington Saturday Jan. 23. The Bearkats never trailed in the game, going up 39-24 at halftime and leading by as many as 18 points early in the second half. Fifteen points down with 10:29 to play, UTA turned up the defensive pressure, holding the Bearkats without a fi eld goal until Crow s basket with 15 secons to play. The Mavericks had cut the margin to two points, 64-62, before Crow s score. Clavell ended the game with 25 points and 10 rebounds for Sam Houston as the Bearkats upped their record to 12-5 for the season. SHSUout-boarded the Mavs 41-32. Ashton Mitchell, in foul trouble most of the game, scored seven points while Drae Murray scored six. Crow had fi ve points and seven rebounds. HIGH-SCORING BACKCOURT DUO Senior guards Corey Allmond and Ashton Mitchell comprise the highest scoring backcourt duo in the Sam Houston s 23 years at the NCAA Division I level. The two players (who are roommates off the court) have combined for 28.3 points per game this season. Roommates off the floor, Allmond and Mitchell now both rank among Sam Houston s top 35 all-time leading scorers. Allmond stands No. 33 with 875 points in two years while Mitchell is No. 21 with 1,011 points,. He is the 21st Sam Houston player to total 1,000 career points. TWO DIFFERENCE MAKERS FOR 2010 TEAM Junior forwards Gilberto Clavell and Josten Crow have been big difference makers for the Bearkats this year. Clavell, a transfer from Collin County, is averaging16.2 points and 6.0 boards. Clavell has scored in double figures in 20 of the Bearkats 26 games including a season high of 34 points in a road victory at Auburn. Head coach Bob Marlin calls Crow the team s glue the player who hold things together by doing the dirty work. The Houston Westfield product, in his first year as a starter after two seasons as a reserve, is third on the team in minutes played (28.0), second in rebounding (5.4) and ranks No. 1 in the Southland and No. 2 in nationally in assist/turnover ratio. PRESTON BROWN EARNS ACADEMIC HONOR Preston Brown, the fourth leading scorer and rebounder for the Sam Houston men s basketball team, has been named as a first team selection on the ESPN The Magazine Academic All- America Team 2010 All-District 6 honor squad. The team is selected by vote of members of the College Sports Information Directors Association (CoSIDA) in the district which consists of NCAA teams from Texas, Louisiana, New Mexico, Mississippi, Alabama and Oklahoma. Brown, a senior kinesiology major from Wichita, KS, produced a 3.50 overall grade point average through his first three years of college www.gobearkats.com - 3

DEFENSE A KEY FOR THE BEARKATS When the Bearkats have played solid defense this season, success has followed. In Sam Houston s victories, the Kats have held opponents to 62.9 points and a field goal percentage of.395. In the Bearkats losses, opponents have averaged 88.3 points and shot.550. SAM HOUSTON OWNS 433-GAME TREY STREAK Sam Houston State has hit at least one three-point basket in 433 consecutive games. That figure includes all the Kats games under Bearkat head coach Bob Marlin. The last time Sam Houston did not hit a three-point basket in a game was on Feb. 9, 1995 against Southwest Texas State. BEARKATS HAVE POSTED BIG WINS THIS SEASON Sam Houston s non-conference victories this year include wins over Auburn, Oral Roberts, Rider and Florida International. The victory over Auburn was the Kats first ever over a Southeastern Conference opponent. The wins over ORU and Rider earned Sam Houston the Mayan Division championship at the Cancun Challenge in Mexico during Thanksgiving week. SECOND WINNINGEST TEAM IN TEXAS IN 21ST CENTURY Since the new century began with the 1999-2000 season, the only NCAA Division I men s basketball program in Texas that has won more games than Sam Houston State has been the Texas Longhorns. UT has won 272 games in the 12 seasons since 2000 while the Bearkats have totaled 210 victories. UTEP, Texas Tech and Texas A&M rank third through fifth in the Texas NCAA Division I men s basketball victory totals. MARLIN WINNINGEST SOUTHLAND ACTIVE COACH Sam Houston s Bob Marlin is only the second head coach in the history of the Southland to post more than 200 coaching victories. The Bearkats record of 220-128 in Marlin s 12 seasons since his first year in 1998-99 stands as the best in the Southland over that time span. Mike Vining, head coach at Louisiana-Monroe from 1983 to 2005 compiled a 383-291 record from 1983 to 2005 to rank as the Southland s winningest head coach. Ironically, Vining is the man who gave Marlin his first coaching job after graduation from Mississippi State in 1981. Marlin served as Vining s graduate asssistant as NLU won the 1982 TransAmerica Conference championship. KATS WERE SOUTHLAND PRESEASON FAVORITES Sam Houston State received the most votes and most first place votes in the annual Southland Conference preseason head coaches poll. The Bearkats were tabbed to repeat as Southland West Division champions with 61 points and seven first place votes. Defending 2009 regular season and tournament champion Stephen F. Austin was selected as the East Division favorite with 58 points and five first place votes. Bob Marlin Sam Houston State University Head Men s Basketball Coach Sam Houston head men s basketball coach Bob Marlin has directed the Bearkats to more victories than any other Southland Conference team during his 12 years at SHSU. Marlin is the second man in the history of the Southland to total more than 200 wins as a head coach in the Southland. Since 2000, only one of the 21 NCAA Division I men s basketball teams in Texas (the UT Longhorns) has won more games than Sam Houston. Inheriting a program that had not finished higher than sixth in the league and posted only two double digit victory seasons in more than a decade, Marlin has directed the Kats to five 20-plus victory seasons (and double digit wins in each of his 10 years as head coach. Sam Houston State stands as one of only three teams in Southland Conference history to put three or more 20-plus victory seasons back-to-back. Twice Marlin has earned Southland Conference Coach of the Year honors - in 2000 after directing the Kats to their first Southland Conference championship and in 2003 after Sam Houston s second title in four years. In 15 seasons as a head coach, Marlin has produced a record of 305 victories and 145 losses. He rolled up a 123-35 record as head coach at Pensacola Junior College. In 1993, he was National Junior College Coach of the Year after directing Pensacola to the NJCAA National Championship. Marlin has served as an assistant coach at Alabama, Marshall, Houston Baptist, and Louisiana-Monroe. Under Marlin, the Bearkats have produced more non-conference intersectional victories than any other Southland Conference team. During Sam Houston s 10-0 start in 2007-08, Sam Houston received votes in the Associated Press national top 25 for the first time since the Kats moved up to the NCAA Division I level. Marlin received National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Coach of the Year honors in 1993 following Pensacola s national title (the first ever for a Florida junior college).
