President s Message Canadian Texas Longhorn Association Hello, We are well into the new year and plans have begun for our Spring Sale and Annual meeting in Saskatoon April 13th. There is more information throughout the newsletter about the sale. As we looked back on 2018, it was a busy year and we tried to do some different activities. We designed a t-shirt for the CTLA members featuring their brands, It was well received by those who wanted their brands displayed. We changed up the photography contest and asked for Colorful Pairs this year and that drew some interest from the membership. We held a summer event at Oyen that was fun and relaxing and could be the beginning of a new event for the association. Our biggest event was returning to Agribition after a 24 year absence and the cattle industry knew we were there. Good media coverage, big crowds and a successful show. It was a fun to be part of it, but a lot of work and time went into the planning and we know what we need to do different for 2019. We need your input and ideas to continue to make the CTLA an association that represents its membership. Hope to see you in Saskatoon. Membership Update Region 1 TLBAA Director Report Calling for any proposed by-law changes for the annual meeting. In accordance with the CTLA by-laws, any proposed by-law changes must be published for the membership no less than 30 days prior to the annual meeting. With the annual meeting scheduled for April 13/2019 all proposals need to be received by the CTLA office prior to March 11th in order to be published on the website for all members. Having returned from Texas where I attended the TLBAA Annual Meetings, here are some meeting updates. Keith DuBose is the new chairman of the board and will do a good job for the membership. He conducted a well run meeting that could have been explosive with several issues being addressed. The DNA/Parentage Verification was put on hold until better options can be presented to the membership. A committee is being identified and I did ask for representation for countries outside of the United States, as no one had considered that our needs might be different. There has been interest shown from Australia and Canada to be part of the committee. At this time I do not know the final group selected, but the Chairman has assured me that the countries outside of the United States will have representation. 2019 bull calves do not have to be DNA tested. I will keep you informed of what decisions are made. The other major issue was the realigning of the Board of Directors and making it a smaller board. It was suggested that Region 1 and Region 2 possibly be combined as our membership numbers are small. I have talked with the committee and emailed their Chairman with our concerns regarding the combining of those two regions. Countries outside of the United States need representation at the Board level as we are often overlooked in planning, in any monetary changes and receiving information in a timely manner. The TRAILS continues to arrive late and mailings are often delayed between the postal systems. I do recommend that all members sign up for the weekly E-Trails that comes out every Friday from the office with updated information. It doesn't cost anything and it keeps you updated on a variety of information. To sign up go to the TLBAA website and follow the instructions to be included in the weekly email. From the Affiliate meeting, the CTLA was recognized as having the most Affiliate News Reports in the TRAILS magazine for 2018 and was thanked for its contributions to the magazine. The Rodger Damrow Colorful Calf Competition had 47 entries from 11 states. There were no entries from Canada and it is hoped that maybe in 2019 there will be. Our entries for the Affiliate Prince and Princess didn't make the final cut, but they were featured in the magazine, thank you to Kristine Fossum and Jack and Deb Johnson as the owners of our entries for 2018. We are looking for a member to sit on the TLBAA Affiliate committee, it involves some teleconferences and working on some affiliate projects. If you are interested, please let me know. Deb Lesyk Any Questions or concerns? We d like to hear from you!

ITLA Report February 2019 The ITLA DNA/EPD program is underway. Our Canadian lab is NEOGEN Geneseek Inc Edmonton, AB They are in full cooperation with their counter part in Nebraska which is the USA lab. This will be a game changer as we go down the road in the longhorn industry, as this is a way of comparing our breed with others and prove our way in the food production. If you are interested and have question please call me, I have sent some samples to the lab and plan on sending more in the spring. Would you like to advertise in one of our sale catalogues or one of our newsletters? Contact one of the Directors to get involved today! The ITLA now has a registry for miniature longhorns. There is certain criteria to register Miniature if they do not fall in that criteria, they can be registered in the regular registry. The E-drover is now the Longhorn Drover which is our electronic magazine going out to approximately 2000 email addresses per month. The cost to advertise is very affordable at $200 for full page, $100 for ½ page and $75 for ¼ page full color. There is a winter special on now to register bulls for $10 each. I have been expressing to the producers across the line to do their international health tests to be able to ship semen to Canada & Australia, A number have shown interest to do so following requests to purchase a quantity of semen. Contact me and we will see if we can get something happening. Gordon Musgrove ITLA Region 1 Director Note: This is a complimentary copy of the CTLA newsletter. We are continuing to update the mailing list. If you are not a member consider joining the CTLA.
