For further details contact Paul Rayner pmr.tudeley@talktalk.net 11 MAY (Saturday) TOWERS CLIMBING COURSE - for leaders ( all day) This course is designed for total novices wishing to take groups climbing (or abseiling) on walls or towers. The course includes full instruction in safety and set up as well as tips on group management and climbing techniques. For those who are already proficient you can choose just to come to the assessment evening. If you pass the assessment then you will gain a permit that allows you to take groups on towers and walls. Cost of 15 ( 3 if you just want assessment) covers all the training and group gear. Personal gear (harness, helmet and belay device) can be hired for the course at a fee. 22 JUNE (Saturday) ROCK CLIMBING COURSE - all day This course is designed for people who have got their towers permit already or those with significant rock experience. The day will cover all training required on how to run rock climbing for groups and will be centred around set up, safety and route selection. The assessment is flexible and you will be left to sort out a date when you feel you are ready. Cost of 7.50 covers all the training and group gear. Personal gear (harness, helmet and belay device) can be hired for the course at a fee. Venue: Dancing Ledge, Langton Matravers Full details and an application form can be found on the County website at www.dorsetscouts.org.uk/activities For further details contact ACC Land Activities - Andy Young on landactivities@dorsetscouts.org.uk 15, 16, 17 NOVEMBER DARTMOOR --HILLWALKING Terrain 1 (training or assessment weekend - leaders) This course is designed for total novices up to people with lots of experience. For those new to the activity you will be fully trained on how to manage groups in a wild country situation as well as being trained on how to navigate accurately. For those who want to lead groups into Terrain 1 you can chose to be assessed in order to gain your permit. The course also includes (for the cost of registration) the South West Mountain and Moorland Qualification. Short evening trips on Portland available (Whilst leaders are needed to supervise the YPs above ground, they don t necessarily have to go underground). SCOUT/ EXPLORER SAILING CAMPS 1-2 June 2019 6-7 July 2019 12-13 October 2019 The camps will run over a weekend at Hengistbury Head Outdoor Centre in Christchurch Harbour, a Royal Yachting Association Recognised Training Centre. The camps are suitable for all levels, from those with no sailing experience to those with RYA Junior Stage 4 or Adult Level 2 certificates. Participants will have as much opportunity as possible to develop their sailing under the tuition of RYA instructors and work towards gaining internationally recognised RYA certificates. Maximum number of places for each camp will be 36. Participants must be able to swim 50 metres. The first two camps will be under canvas at Hengistbury. The price of each will be 65-70, which includes RYA logbooks and certificates where required. The October camp will be in huts at Braggers with transport between Hengistbury and Braggers by minibus. The price has not yet been fixed and may be a little more expensive. CUB/SCOUT/EXPLORER WATERSPORTS CAMPS The camps will run over a weekend at Hengistbury Head Outdoor Centre in Christchurch Harbour. They are suitable for all levels, with or without experience, and will give participants the opportunity to take part in activities such as kayaking, canoeing, dragon boating, raft building or windsurfing. Maximum number of places for each camp will be 32. Participants must be able to swim 50 metres. Both camps will be under canvas at Hengistbury. The price of each camp will be 65-70 11-12 May 2019 This camp will be open to Scouts and Explorers. 27-28 July 2019 This camp will be open to Cubs and Scouts. SAILING REGATTA 14 SEPTEMBER 2019 This will be an opportunity for competitive racing, and is open to Scouts and Explorers who can sail competently. The maximum number of places will be 48, divided into 3 groups of 16. The cost for the day will be 20 which will include food and prizes. Groups/units may put in their own teams or join with other to make a team.

LEADER TRAINING Hengistbury Head Outdoor Centre runs a range of courses for adults. There may be spaces on these which the Centre may make available to Dorset Scouts at low rates. County assessors are also able to run RYA courses at the Centre, as well as permit assessments, subject to demand and other activities going on at the Centre. RYA Dinghy Instructor courses at Hengistbury There may be spaces for suitably experienced leaders or Explorer Scouts over 16 on RYA Instructor courses. These last for five days, and candidates need to hold RYA Powerboat Level 2 and current first aid certificates and to pass a pre-entry sailing assessment. Provisional dates for one course are 18-22 February 2019 and the planned price for leaders is 235 subject to sufficient participants. Other courses may be arranged for later in the year. RYA Powerboat Courses at Hengistbury 23-24 March 6 & 7 April There will be a Powerboat Level 2 course on 23-24 March 2019; and Safety Boat training days on 6 and 7 April. The price of the PB2 course and one safety boat day for leaders is 50. Safety Boat techniques at Hengistbury 10 March 11 March 19 May This one day training will run on 10 and 11 March and 19 May. It will be run by the Centre Principal and is an essential requirement for any Scout leader who wants to drive a powerboat at Hengistbury for any Scout sessions. The minimum requirement is PB2 and there is no charge. Bookings should be made direct with Hengistbury Head OEC HENGISTBURY@brock.ac.uk Dragon boat training at Hengistbury 7 & 8 May Preparatory Day 30 April Hengistbury is running training for dragon boating on 7 and 8 May, which will lead to the Dragon Boat Association Coach Level 1 (Scout permit level) or Level 2, depending on the competence of the participant. For those with no prior experience of dragon boats, there is a preparatory day on 30 April. Total cost for the three days is 150. Hengistbury Open Day There have been requests for an opportunity for leaders, particularly DCs and GSLs, to visit the Centre to see the facilities and opportunities available. We hope to organise this in March 2019.
