Community support helps us succeed The Cullen Children s Foundation story and history Two indelible experiences sparked the beginning of the Cullen Children s Foundation. Matt s wife, Bridget Cullen, explains it: As Matt s NHL career progressed, we wanted a charitable event as part of our summers in Minnesota and North Dakota, and we knew we wanted to help our community for a really long time. Then, in 2003, Matt s brother Mark had his routine physical for the Minnesota Wild. Physicians noticed an odd shaped mole on Mark s back, which they immediately removed. It was malignant melanoma further tests showed the cancer had not spread. Mark has been cancer-free ever since. Then the NHL lockout for the 2004-05 season had Matt playing hockey in Cortina, Italy. There, he and Bridget met a boy named Jacopo who had been diagnosed with a cancerous brain tumor. That s when we knew we wanted to help children with cancer, Bridget says. Matt skated with Jacopo and we got to know his family very well. Jacopo slept with Matt s jersey on and he was such a joy to be around. Jacopo passed away in early 2008, but we were so blessed to know him and be a part of his life. He lives on through the work of the Cullen Children s Foundation. And the kids we help are now all Cully s Kids. Our first Cully s Kids Weekend was in 2005 with a Golf Tournament, Silent Auction/Concert and Texas Hold em Poker Tournament. It has now evolved into a 3 day weekend with a Silent Auction and Social on Thursday evening, the golf tournament on Friday and the Cully s Kids Picnic at Newman Outdoor Field. This gives our sponsors a chance to meet and visit the kids they help. In the past seven years, we have raised more support every year, and have been able to donate more to local 501 (c) (3) organizations that help kids with serious illnesses. These numbers reflect the hard work and dedication of our sponsorship committee and continued support of our communities. Best of all, these numbers help kids. Monies raised: 2005 - $239,000 2006 - $268,000 2007 - $297,000 2008 - $355,000 2009 - $376,000 2010 - $397,000 2011 - $437,000 Total of $2,369,000 Monies granted: 2005 - $68,000 2006 - $110,000 2007 - $134,220 2008 - $145,200 2009 - $103,500 2010 - $135,050 2011 - $143,600 Total of $839,370 The Endowment Fund As of January 1, 2012 the CCF Endowment fund holds $1.2 million dollars.
