BY THE NUMBERS 6 Radford has posted six straight winning seasons on its home floor at the Dedmon Center, going 60-22 since the 2012-13 campaign 78.8 The Highlanders return 78.8% of its scoring from a season ago, including six of the team s top seven scorers 1 2018-19 marks the first time both Radford men s and women s basketball were picked to finish first in the Big South Preseason Polls TEAM NOTES LAST TIME OUT Ohio 78, Radford 69-12/8/18 ATHENS, Ohio The Radford men s basketball team never let up in its comeback effort, but couldn t overcome an early deficit and continuous foul trouble in a 78-69 defeat against Ohio at The Convocation Center on Saturday afternoon. In a game that felt like the Highlanders were playing against more than just the other team, Radford was whistled for 21 fouls compared to just 13 for the Bobcats. As a result, Ohio went 20-for-25 from the free throw line while Radford finished 7-for-12. Senior guard Caleb Tanner went off for 16 points, going 5-for-6 from deep, and junior guard Travis Fields Jr. was nearly as good, going 4-for-6 on 3-pointers to match his career high and finish with 14 points. Playing in his home state, redshirt sophomore guard Carlik Jones made just one of his first six shots before going 5-for-7 over the final 12 minutes and scoring 16 points. With the loss, Radford moves to 6-3 on the season while Ohio improves to 6-3. It s the first time the Highlanders have dropped back-to-back games since February of last season, snapping a 19-game streak without two straight losses. You d be hard pressed to see a slower start from the Highlanders, who trailed by as many as 15 points in the first half. Neither team could find the bottom of the net early, but the Bobcats struck first with a layup at the 17:41 mark. They would go ahead, 8-0, before a Fields Jr. jumper stopped the bleeding at 14:43. With under eight minutes to go in the period, Radford was just 4-for-18 (22%) from the floor and trailing by a large margin. That s when junior guard Devin Hutchinson drilled a three from the wing to begin a 7-0 run that got the Highlanders right back in it. Tanner, who had just five 3-pointers over his last five games, picked up where Hutchinson left off and connected on three straight shots from beyond the arc to pull Radford within three at 29-26 until one final Ohio basket made it 32-26 heading into halftime. The offensive momentum carried over into the second half as the Highlanders posted 43 points over the final 20 minutes, but any progress made was eventually erased by Ohio s free throw shooting. At the midway point of the second half, Radford had battled back and pulled within three once again at 48-45. It was as close as Radford would get for the rest of the game as the Bobcats proceeded to hit five straight free throws to stay out in front. Ohio knocked down 17 free throws over the final 9:34 to protect its lead and eventually earn the victory. Jason Carter led the Bobcats with 19 points and six rebounds while Teyvion Kirk (17 points, six rebounds) and Ben Vander Plas (14 points, five rebounds) joined him in double figures. Doug Taylor made the biggest impact on the game, pulling down 16 rebounds, including five on the offensive end, to help Ohio earn a 39-31 advantage in rebounding. SERIES HISTORY: CLEMSON In a series dating back to the 1989-90, Radford is 0-3 all-time against Clemson. The first meeting between the two programs came on Dec. 9, 1989 when the Tigers earned a 114-76 victory on their home floor. The, in their next meeting on Nov. 30, 1998, the Highlanders were held to a program record-low 38 points in a 70-38 defeat. The most recent matchup between Radford and Clemson came on Dec. 22, 2003 when the Tigers got away with a 74-58 win in a much more competitive contest. RADFORD VS. THE ACC The Highlanders have played programs that are currently in the Atlantic Coast Conference a total of 36 times, going 3-33 overall. Two of those wins came against Virginia Tech, including one victory that occurred while the Hokies were in the Big East, and one came earlier this season at Notre Dame. On Nov. 14, Radford made history by going into South Bend, Ind. and coming out with a 63-60 victory over the Fighting Irish. Senior guard Caleb Tanner poured in 20 points on 6-of-9 shooting on 3-pointers while fellow senior forward Ed Polite Jr. finished with a 16-point, 11-rebound double-double.... #RISEANDDEFEND

... RADFORD MEN S BASKETBALL SCOUTING THE TIGERS Clemson is widely regarded as one of the top contenders in a stacked ACC this season. The league s preseason poll picked the Tigers to finish sixth, but they did receive one first-place vote, joining Duke, Virginia, North Carolina and Syracuse as the only teams to get at least one. The Tigers were undefeated through five games this season and rose to as high as No. 16 in the AP Poll before dropping three of their last four contests. They dropped a pair of close contests to Creighton and Nebraska by a combined seven points, bounced back with a 65-60 win over Saint Peter s and then fell to No. 22 Mississippi State. Graduate guard Marcquise Reed leads his squad in scoring (19.4 ppg) and assists (3.4 apg) while senior forward Elijah Thomas (7.3 rpg) carries the load on the boards. As a team, the Tigers are shooting 47.9-percent from the field while holding opponents to 43.3-percent. They own a +5.3 rebounding margin and +1.6 turnover margin as well. COACHING CONNECTION Long-time fans of the Radford men s basketball programs will see a familiar face on the opposing bench this Saturday. Assistant coach Dick Bender has been with the Tigers for seven years now, but from 1991-97, he was an assistant coach under Ron Bradley at Radford. In Bender s six seasons with the Highlanders, Radford posted the best non-conference and conference records of any team in the Big South. AP TOP 25 & NCAA NET RANKINGS With a 6-1 record and historic wins over Notre Dame and No. 17 Texas on the road, the Radford men s basketball team received votes in the Associated Press (AP) Top 25 Poll for the first time in program history on December 3rd. The Highlanders received nine points in the poll, tying them with TCU (9) and putting them ahead of teams such as Notre Dame (3), Oregon (3), UCLA (3), Florida (2) and Oklahoma (1). Heads were turned on November 26th as well when Radford checked in at No. 22 in the nation in the first-ever edition of the NCAA NET Rankings. The Highlanders rose as high as No. 15 in those rankings out of 353 Division I teams. TEAM BSC Pct. ALL Pct. Through seven seasons of play he and his teams have won 116 games at Radford, making him the third-winningest coach in program history. Sixty of those wins have come against Big South competition. Thirteen players have been named All-Big South in his time at Radford and nine players have been tabbed VaSID All-State. Under Jones, Javonte Green was named Big South Defensive Player of the Year in 2014-15 and Carlik Jones earned Big South Freshman of the Year honors in 2017-18. The 2014-15 campaign also featured a huge academic honor as Kyle Noreen was named a CoSIDA Academic All-District member. 2017-18 was Jones most successful season to date, the season in which he was named Big South Coach of the Year and NABC District 3 Coach of the Year honors after leading the Highlanders to a Big South championship and playing in the NCAA Tournament for the third time in program history. Taking Coach Jones lead, Radford set a Division I school record with 23 wins, completing the season at 23-13. The Highlanders earned victories over notable opponents such as East Carolina and James Madison during the non-conference schedule before compiling a 12-6 Big South record to finish the regular season in second place. He also became the third head coach in Radford history to reach 100 wins on Dec. 23, 2017 when the Highlanders topped UC Davis to clinch the Continental Tire Las Vegas Classic title. The team s postseason run was one to remember. Thanks in part to Jones preaching toughness and hard work throughout his tenure, the Highlanders overcame several obstacles in the Big South Championships to top No. 10 Longwood, No. 3 Winthrop and No. 5 Liberty to take home the program s third ever conference title. The entire championship run culminated with The Shot, as redshirt freshman Carlik Jones s buzzer-beating 3-pointer lifted Radford over in-state rival Liberty, 55-52, in front of a sellout crowd at the Dedmon Center. Jones and the Highlanders earned a No. 16 seed in the NCAA COACH JONES: INSIDE THE NUMBERS CAREER RECORDS Overall Record (All Games): 122-119 Big South Games (regular season): 60-62 Big South Tournament: 5-6 At the Dedmon Center: 65-36 On The Road: 43-73 Neutral Site Games: 13-12 Tournament and were selected to play in the First Four in Dayton, Ohio. It was there on March 13, 2018 that Radford won its first ever NCAA Tournament victory a 71-61 win over LIU Brooklyn. The seventh head coach in program history, Jones took over a program with just one win in the season prior to his arrival on campus and led a three-year turnaround that resulted in back-to-back 22-win seasons in 2013-14 and 2014-15. During his tenure, the Highlanders have defeated opponents such as Georgetown, Virginia Tech and Penn State. The success of the program has led to an increase in exposure all over the country with the team appearing on national and regional television countless times.radford s success can be attributed to the foundation laid in Jones first season in the red and white with Big South All-Freshman selections Javonte Green and R.J.
