RHONDDA REBEL Tuesday, September 25 BBC One Wales, 10.40pm To mark the centenary of the first women s suffrage act of 1918, Welsh National Opera have commissioned a new musical entertainment called Rhondda Rips it Up!, based on the life of Margaret Haig Thomas (Lady Rhondda). An unlikely suffragette daughter of wealthy Welsh industrialist DA Thomas, Margaret tirelessly campaigned for equal rights for women and in 1913 was arrested for planting a bomb in a letter box in Newport. She was imprisoned in Usk jail and went on hunger strike. Margaret took over the running of her father s many businesses and inherited his title becoming Lady Rhondda but as a woman, was never able to take her seat in the House of Lords. She fought tirelessly to change this and the Life Peerages Act was finally passed in April 1958. Journalist and broadcaster Carolyn Hitt, embarks on a journey of Lady Rhondda s incredible life and work. Interwoven with the making of WNO s allfemale cast and crew performance, starring soprano Lesley Garrett, she celebrates this pioneering Welsh woman's influence as a campaigner and publisher. BACK IN TIME FOR THE FACTORY Wednesday, September 26 BBC One Wales, 8pm #BackInTimeForTheFactory The modern day women are taken back to 1976 a year when disco was dominating the dance floors and maxi dresses were in vogue. It was a year of great hope for women in Britain; with the Sex Discrimination Act being passed in 1975 and the Equal Pay Act finally coming into force. But did the changes in the law lead to equality on the factory floor? In a year of economic uncertainty and rocketing inflation, the women need to decide whether equality is worth striking over. Following in the footsteps of the original female workers who were stalwarts of the unions fighting inequality, they navigate the world of pickets, banners and crossing the line. Despite the uncertainty, the production line will still have to run, as the women take on their toughest challenge yet - the prairie dress. Hugely popular in mid 1970s Britain, this romantic bohemian silhouette was pioneered by one of Wales s leading designers, Laura Ashley. And off the production line, the factory holds its own beauty pageant. No beauty contest would be complete without the glamour of the swimsuit round and this factory pageant is no different. But how will today s women feel about parading around in their swimming costumes? Cerys Rees, 0303 082 1785 / cerys.rees@bbc.co.uk 3
