This was her 3rd trip for Thrivent Builds. Jennifer helped build seed homes in Nicaragua previously. Hawaii has the #1 homeless population in the United States of America. Fifty two percent of the homeless population there have at least one job but just can t afford to buy a home. Lots of people are living in their cars. Building materials are expensive because they arrive by boat. Land is very expensive there and is difficult to get. They have to sign a 99 year lease on land. The average wait time for a lease on land is now 37 years. Home ownership matters! It provides wealth, social impact, health, school stability, and helps them to be more engaged in their community. It also cuts down on crime. Jennifer led the group. They worked on a home for a family of 5; Stanton & Kaylee and their 3 sons. The family had been living with his family and his brother s families with his parents. The new home is a stick built home. Stanton is a tile layer and Kaylee works at the Post Office. Their new home wasn t done in a week. The group primed & trimmed siding and installed; hurricane reinforcements, Tyvek, and windows. They also braced and squared walls. The volunteers back filled the foundation. Habitat for Humanity has built almost a million homes worldwide! They believe in giving a Hand Up. The home loans carry 0% interest. The families must give 500 hours of service hours towards their home. When a home is paid off that is seed money for the next home. If you are interested in volunteering, she will be planning another trip in the future. It takes at least 8 members on a team but can take as many as 16 people. There a 2 travel day and you do get to have 2 tourism days while your there. There are 5 work days. The volunteers stayed in a 4 star resort and traveled about 20-30 minutes to the job site. Homes for evacuees were also being built due to the volcano erupting. Everyone cooked their own breakfast in their rooms that included a mini kitchen. Lunch was brought to them at the worksite. Dinner was a nice time out in the evenings. They went to a Luau and other special places for dinner. And they had free time. The volunteers also helped one day on some basic shelter for volcano evacuees.
