Welcome to the 12th Annual Edie Creek Angus 2-Year Old Bull Sale! 2018 brought us the driest growing season in recent memory, and although the cool, wet (& snowy) weather that we got in the fall will partially replenish soil moisture for 2019, it was a very tough year on the forage supplies in our area. Half or less of usual hay was made, and pastures were under extreme pressure: many of our paddocks had very little regrowth after the first short-duration graze off. We were very grateful for a bit of help from two different neighbours whose land we fenced off & grazed for the first time, which gave us almost 4 weeks of grazing for our main cowherd. We also got two weeks of late fall grazing of the high-energy grazing blend of Union brassicas & ryegrass. Because of these great things, we were able to hold off winter feeding until November 26 th. We certainly wondered in August if we d even manage to keep grazing until the 1 st of November! The forage shortage hurried up our plan to tighten our focus on our registered herd, as we sold 50 bred females in December 2018 to reduce the amount of mouths to feed around here for the winter, as well as refine our herd to cow families that work best in our program. Having cows that thrive in your forage environment is a big part of ranch profitability. This is one of our primary goals for providing our customers with genetics that work on many levels. The Edie Creek Angus Program raises registered Angus cattle with the same or tougher management as our commercial customers raise their cattle in. No extra feed or fancy treatments. Our 2-Year Old bulls are raised responsibly and go to work without the shock to the system that yearling bulls fed a high-energy ration would get. Our herd calves on pasture in May on their own. No one checks them overnight. We push these cattle to excel in a low input system so that they & their daughters can do the same at your place. Besides the obvious expense of feed, labour is a huge expense, and if you have less trouble with calving, you have more time for important things. Having sold bulls into all the Canadian provinces so far except 3 of the Atlantic provinces, we were excited to sell 4 bulls into 3 American States last year for the first time: Minnesota, N. Dakota, and Montana. Two of the bulls went to Feiring Angus Ranch in ND, and the high-selling Red Angus bull sold to Cody McDaniel in MT of Pharo Cattle Co. Pharo Cattle Co sells 1,000 bulls/year with a similar low-input, forage-focused program as ours. There will be 20 bulls available in the sale that will be 4-star or 5-star calving ease heifer bulls. 8 bulls will be from an OCC Homer 650H son that we had brought up from OCC. We lost him unfortunately after his first calf crop. There will be 5 sons of MH Tubby 56, 10 deep-made sons of OCC Easy Red 868A, 9 Titan sons, and the last 6 natural-service sons of OCC Worthy Man. There are also 2 embryo sons of the highly productive OCC Karen 759N cow who had one of the best udders we ve seen. We ve expanded our registered herd to the point where we no longer need to keep all of our good replacement heifers for in-herd growth. So after many years of requests for Edie Creek females, we are now offering for the Þrst time a group of 21 Edie Creek Angus Bred Heifers in this sale. They are AI d to calve starting in late April to Edie Creek bulls or other AI sires from a similar program. As our kids continue to grow up, our focus on low-input cattle that are profitable for our customers becomes stronger, since profitable customers allow us to do what we love: raise quality breeding stock and raise our kids on a farm where they can learn about life, love, & hard work. Thank you for your interest in our program and for your support in the past. We will continue to provide breeding stock that are raised in real-world conditions so that they suit your needs. With much gratitude, Jonathan & Stefan Bouw & Families 3 MH Tubby 56 daughter

He averaged 66lbs on his bull calves and 65lbs on his heifer calves. We lost him after his Þrst breeding season, and we did not get any semen collected on him, so these will be his only sons & daughters to sell at auction. His sire OCC Homer 650H has been used heavily as a Òsure thingó in heifer projects down in the US over the last 20 years, and Homer daughters make excellent cows. He bred 40+ cows as a 11yr old bull, and looks great going into his 12th year. His breeder, Monte Howrey, said ÒTitan: the older he gets, the more I appreciate him. Just no holes in him: feet are great, Athletic, incredible disposition, looks like he could breed cows for another 4 or 5yrs. Fertile and highly intelligent...he's probably the most USEFUL bull I have ever bred." Titan comes from the same cow family as DDA Emblazon 27C, the AI sire of the lot 9 & 47 bull. We donõt think youõll Þnd better feet on a mature bull than TitanÕs. 5

These heifers have been raised without any grain, corn silage or pellets. We will pull them off the Þeld where they are bale grazing, a day before the bull sale. This year we have 6 F1 Black FleckAngus, 12 PB Black Angus, 2 Black commercials and 1 PB Red Angus. The Heifers will be selling in groups of 3, all as commercial heifers. We will only transfer papers if heifers sell for $2500 or more. This past summer we bred AI on natural heats for 7 days, then gave Estrumate to the heifers that had not cycled yet, & had a couple busy days of AI. After this 10 day project, they were turned out to pasture where they were exposed for 42 days. The natural service bulls used were ECA 2D (OCC Hunter 928H son) and ECA 155D (OCC Paxton 730P son), out of two of our top donor cows. Due to start calving April 27 th, 2019 Our Long term goal is to supply our customers with Purebred and F1 females that can be used to create a proþtable cowherd factory which you can then cross with terminal sires to add hybrid vigour, performance and the "ßavour of the day" in hide colour. Why use an Edie Creek Angus Bull? We are 19 years into the journey of genetic progress and have learned many lessons along the way. There is no such thing as free lunch : not in physics, economics, or in producing beef cattle. If you want more production, you re gonna have to pay for it with more feed inputs to get there. Finding the balance of performance that suits your environment truly is the sweet spot in beef production. Solar Energy is the closest thing we have to a free lunch, so we need to maximize our capture of solar energy, with cow herds that turn low quality forages (grass) into high quality protein (beef). We have come to believe that getting the cowherd right is the most important foundation for beef production, since feeding that cow factory is your biggest expense. Matching your cowherd to the resources in your environment is the next most important step after reducing your inputs. Edie Creek Angus bulls can help you with both of those, creating more profit within your cow herd. Our bulls are bred with generations of fleshing ability, fertility, capacity, correct feet, longevity and sire beautiful udders. Our Bulls will sire calves that are born easily and nurse quickly. They will establish an efficient, Maternal Cowherd Factory for you which can then be mated with Terminal sires to add hybrid vigour performance and the "flavour of the day" in hide colour. Doing this will create a functional, long-living cowherd that will wean calves at the highest efficiency in your commercial ranch environment. MODERATE-MATERNAL-EASY CALVING-EASY FLESHING Edie Creek bulls will consistently put their stamp on their calves, ensuring a uniform calf crop, because they aren t a wild mix of genes from the Hottest sires of the day. They are methodically bred with profit for the commercial cow man as their central purpose, not full of popular bulls who were fluffed well and fed hard. The 2-Year Old bulls in this sale are red-meat-packing breeding machines that will breed more cows for more years & add POUNDS without adding FRAME. We are familiar with the Angus gene pool well enough to know what works & doesn't work in a non-pampered real ranch environment. We have been using A.I., & E.T. to help us move ahead with our gene pool, not making it wider, but deeper. This enables us to offer a more consistent pen of bulls every year. We are tightening the screws on reproductive longevity by shortening our breeding seasons for both heifers and cows Heifers only saw a bull for 42 days, and the cows saw Angus bulls for the first 42 days, and a Fleckvieh bull for the last cycle Thus ensuring only the most fertile females produce offspring we can select purebred parent stock from. The focus of our breeding goals remains to increase the profitability of the commercial cattle producers by offering consistent, quality genetics that enable them to improve their efficiency, increase the reproductive longevity of their cowherds in harsh commercial ranching environments, & reduce their input costs of feed & labour. We really enjoy visiting with cattlefolks, so please give us a call if you want to talk about our breeding program or any of the bulls for sale or stop by anytime for a tour! Hope to see you March 9th! Jonathan & Stefan Bouw 40

Bull Development These bulls have been raised on their mothers milk and grass. They were weaned in late November, then brought in and fed Grass-Alfalfa silage with 2.5 lbs of barley and free choice 1st cut hay. In June they were turned out to pasture, with no supplements, where they grew well until the middle of November 2018. At this time, they came home and received green feed oat haylage & 6.75 lbs of crushed peas and 5lbs of grass seed screenings. They have not been pushed with hard feed so that they will breed longer for you. These are hard muscled bulls, not dough boys. Bull Program Bulls can be kept at Edie Creek Angus for $2/day until May 1st. After that, the cost will be $3/day. Free delivery available to Ashern Auction Mart. If you haul your bull on Sale day we will give you a $50 discount on each bull. Bulls MUST be insured if they are to be kept on our farm. TERMS AND CONDITIONS The terms of sale are by cash or cheque. Liabilities: All persons attending the sale do so at their own risk and sellers assume no liability, legal or otherwise, for any accidents occurring in or about the premises. GUARANTEE: The Bulls have been evaluated for breeding soundness and semen quality by Beausejour Animal Hospital. We guarantee to provide you with a sound, fertile bull at the point of sale. Should your bull fail to be a satisfactory breeder in his first breeding season, he will be replaced with a bull of equal value or a credit will be given towards the purchase of another bull. We will not provide the replacement or credit for a bull that is physically injured or mismanaged. It is the responsibility of the buyer to insure their bulls. The Bred Heifers were preg checked safe in calf on November 21, 2018 by Beausejour Animal Hospital. They had 1 chance at AI between July 16th - 27th. They were then exposed for 2 cycles, and the bulls were pulled on September 7th, 2018. No guarantee is given that a pregnant female will deliver a live calf, nor that she will carry the calf full term. ** BULL RATINGS EXPLAINED: Calving Ease: Based on the bull's birthweight, his parents' birthweight, and his own EPD's. Also based on the assumption that the bull will be breeding small-framed Angus/British cattle--if the bull will be breeding larger-framed Continental cattle, a three-star () bull may work on heifers without any trouble. These are simply guidelines to help your decision making. You are ultimately responsible for the matings of your own cattle. Calving Ease Rating: "*" - Suitable for breeding cows only - 100 lb+ Birth weights possible ** - Suitable for breeding smaller cows-90 lb+ Birth weights possible "" - Suitable for breeding cows and larger-framed, mature heifers - 85 lb BW s "" -Suitable for breeding heifers & cows too -HEIFER BULL, easy deliveries with vigorous calves at birth! Rating: Based on the quality of the dam's udder structure and teat shape and size. Rated between "1" - "5", a score of "3" would be an average, functional udder, while a score of "5" would be a perfectly level udder with small, shapely teats. Rating: Designed to predict the ability of the bull's offspring to thrive in a forage-only environment. The forage rating is also a suitable indicator of the bull's own ability to stay in good ßesh on a low-energy ration ("easy-keeping-ness"). Rated between "1" - "5", a score of "3" would be moderately easy ßeshing, while a score of "5" would be very easy ßeshing and his offspring would Þnish on forages alone.
