Feature Japan Skiing By John Eddy.(not Hakuba, Niseko, Nozawa or Myoko) Just back from our 9th or maybe 10th one month trip to the land of onsens (communal hot baths) good cheap whisky, sushi and ramen (noodle soup). What gets us back there year after year? Put simply it s the powder but also the food, culture and total ease of travel. What the heck has this got to do with surfing? More on that soon. Almost daily fresh falls of snow during January and February attract more and more snow riders from across the globe to Japan. I ve noticed the numbers chasing fresh tracks increase year on year although 2012 & 13, after the big Tsunami slowed things down. This growth (mainly Australians) has meant that the well known places like those in the title are skied out very quickly and its all over by 11 am. Depending on your snow knowledge this may not mean a lot but a surfing analogy could be get in early before it blows onshore. To continue this analogy we try to avoid the crowded spots and go to back beaches where its off shore all day. After all there are over 500 resorts in Japan to choose from. Why do people go to these popular places that can seem like the snow equivalent of Bali or the Pass? Mostly because its easy to get to, english is widely spoken, western style food everywhere, lots of accommodation options and packages etc. So the back beaches we have headed to for the last few years have been around the top of the main island (Honshu) in a large area known as Tohoku. Virtually no foreigners around and fresh tracks all day Better known resorts in this area include Zao Onsen, Appi Kogen,Geto Kogen and Grandeco. As an example of costs, this year we got an apartment at Appi through Air B&B for a week for up to 5 people for $1000 and this included 12 days of lift tickets. Normal pension accommodation on or near resorts is around $60 to 100 per night each including dinner and breakfast. Accommodation places usually have deals on lift tickets at around $30 to $50 per day. Senior discounts usually kick in at 55 or 60 years old. At some of the smaller resorts I think it was $10 a day! Japan offers good cheap skiing and is only 9 hours away from the Gold Coast with flights sometimes $500 or less return. It s also a great good value family holiday. We usually hire a car which gives great flexibility and gets you to some of the less accessible places. Its also the cheapest way to get around if you are 3 or more. Alternatively the two week JR east rail passes are good value. The quieter secret places are a bit like the once secret surf spots around Australia. Just like those though, the growth in off-piste riding will soon (2 or 3 years) see these places become more popular. You can always earn your turns to get away from it though, like here: If you are interested to know more happy to chat or you can find lots of information in the Japan section forums on www.ski.com.au. and all resort listing at www.snowjapan.com. Thanks John & Lisa Cheers Ed. 5
