Both grew up fatherless in similar Baltimore neighborhoods and had difficult childhoods; both hung out on street corners with their crews; both ran into trouble with the police. How, then, did one grow up to be a Rhodes Scholar, decorated veteran, White House Fellow, and business leader, while the other ended up a convicted murderer serving a life sentence? Wes Moore sets out to answer this profound question.

From the General Manager E xcitement is in the air as the cold recedes and warm weather approaches! We are very excited about the upcoming spring season. Our club golf tournaments continue to grow in participation and become more fun and successful. Jim Hickman is working on developing some exciting strategies to help the golf department improve operations and member services and create a more appealing selection of merchandise. Please check next month s newsletter for more pro shop and golf updates. As we move toward spring, Briane and his crew are preparing the greens to keep them at a consistently high quality for our members. I am working closely with Anastasia and with the Executive Committee to explore additional membership opportunities for the spring. We will keep you updated as we make the final decisions. Summer seems a long way off, but it s not too early to start thinking about summer camp! Check out the full article in the youth section. The pool season will begin in May as usual, but will close at the end of August due to the September 1 st beginning of construction on the new Irish Pub and Sports Bar to be built above the pool area. We are happy to announce that the Seasonal Pool & Social Membership will continue this summer! Please see the full article in the Membership News section for more information. We are glad to offer our members the benefit of hosting events at the Brickyard, and the revenue the events bring allows us keep the buildings and grounds in top shape. Golf News A Note from your Course Superintendent W ell, we survived a fairly mild January. Let s hope this month doesn t turn too cold on us. The weather cooperated and we were able to get a few of the projects done that we wanted to in January. We fixed the drainage issue to the right of the #5 green. There is an underground water source that keeps the ground wet in that area. We dug out all around the problem area and added drain lines and gravel to the existing catch basin. We then filled in the whole area with gravel and topped that off with landscape fabric, sand, and sod. The sod will take a while to fill in so we will keep that area ground under repair. We installed a catch basin to the left of the #12 rough where the water would wash out under the big oak tree. We installed some sod around the new catch basin, so we will also keep this area ground under repair for a little while. We installed a new sidewalk on the backside of the clubhouse by the #1 tee. This gives everyone a clear walking path from the tee up to the grill/back patio area. We took down and cleaned up some of the dead trees around the course. We took down the tree to the right of #6 that was hit by lightning, the tree on #4 that was killed by pine beetles, and the tree to the right of #1 that was hit by lightning. We cleaned up a couple of downed trees to the right of #3, the downed tree to the left of #12, and the downed trees to the left of #11. We have finished our winter tree pruning program and started cutting back the cordgrass throughout the course. We will continue that through February. I have sprayed all the weeds on the course in January and they should start dying out soon. We have scheduled our spring pre-emerge/fertilizer for the 9 th of March. That is done on a Monday, and then on Tuesday, March 10 th, we will be cart path only. This will help ensure that the chemicals will soak into the soil and that the carts will not burn the grass driving over it. Sorry for any inconvenience this may cause. Hope to see you on the course! Briane Faletto, GCS Class A Superintedent 10
