The Western Collegiate Hockey Association, coming off a fourth consecutive men s national championship and marking a record 35th NCAA title overall since the league s founding in 1951, today ( June 16) released its 2005-06 composite schedule, highlighted by the 2006 Red Baron WCHA Final Five at Xcel Energy Center in Saint Paul, Minn., from March 16-18. We expect the upcoming season to be one of the most competitive in conference history, said Commissioner Bruce M. McLeod, and although that may sound like a cliche, nothing could be more true. The strength of the Association across the board has reached a point where literally every league game is a dogfight and our teams know they have to come to play every night. The Association has been extraordinarly successful in recent years coming off what arguably have been the two best seasons in our now 54-year history and we are confident that trend will continue in 2005-06, added McLeod. As you look around the league, our member team rosters are deep and talented, our coaching staffs are experienced and knowledgeable, and member team recruiting seasons have again gone well, added McLeod. But we also know we can t rest on our laurels, as Division 1 college hockey as a whole continues to improve across the board. And that s what makes this collegiate game so great today. The 28-game conference season and the battle for the 2005-06 regular season championship and MacNaughton Cup will again consist of 28 games. The first two WCHA series of the season are set for the weekend of Oct. 21-22 and find Minnesota hosting Minnesota State and St. Cloud State entertaining Wisconsin. The conference regular season will then conclude March 2-4, when defending WCHA co-champions Denver and Colorado College play a home-and-home series, Wisconsin hosts St. Cloud State, Minnesota hosts Minnesota Duluth, and North Dakota hosts Michigan Tech. In all, there are nine weekends (Oct. 28-29, Nov. 4-5, Nov. 11-12, Nov. 18-20, Dec. 2-3, Jan. 13-14, Jan. 20-21, Feb. 17-18, and Feb. 24-25) that will feature five head-to-head conference series. The pursuit of the conference playoff championship and the Broadmoor Trophy will commence the weekend of March 10-12 with the first round of the WCHA Playoffs, followed by the 2006 Red Baron WCHA Final Five at Xcel Energy Center in Saint Paul, Minn., from March 16-18. This will be the sixth consecutive appearance of the Final Five at Xcel Energy Center, with 375,859 fans having attended the event since 2001 an average of 75,172 per event. We have forged a tremendously productive and rewarding relationship for the Final Five with the con t

Minnesota Wild, Xcel Energy Center and the communities of Saint Paul and Minneapolis over the past half-dozen years, said McLeod. Our championship has become one of the most successful tournaments in the country, and we couldn t be happier to be returning to the X again in 2006. We are also proud to again have Red Baron as our title sponsor. Over the course of the regular season, WCHA-member teams will also be either hosting or playing in a number of noteworthy tournaments. On Oct. 7-8, Colorado College will host the IceBreaker Invitational with Air Force Academy, Maine and Union College while North Dakota will join Michigan State, Miami and Wayne State in the Lefty McFadden Tournament in Dayton, Ohio. On Oct. 14-15, Alaska Anchorage and new head coach Dave Shyiak will host Michigan Tech, Rensselaer and Vermont in the Nye Frontier Classic. Over the Thanksgiving holiday (Nov. 25-26), the WCHA s Minnesota and Wisconsin will travel to the CCHA s Michigan and Michigan State for the annual College Hockey Showcase. Over the Christmas/New Year s holiday period, Minnesota Duluth will join Cornell, Maine and Northeastern at the Florida College Classic in Estero, Fla. (Dec. 28-29), Michigan Tech will host Colorado College, Michigan and Michigan State in the Great Lakes Invitational in Detroit (Dec. 29-30), Minnesota will host Canisius, UMass-Lowell and Union in the Dodge Mariucci Classic (Dec. 29-30), Wisconsin will host Northern Michigan, Western Michigan and Wayne State in the Badger Hockey Showdown (Dec. 30-31), and Denver will host Boston College, Ferris State and Princeton in the Wells Fargo Denver Cup (Dec. 30-31). Division 1 college hockey moves outdoors on Saturday, Feb. 11, when the U.S. Hockey Hall of Fame Game will feature WCHA-member Wisconsin hosting Ohio State in the Frozen Tundra Hockey Classic at Lambeau Field in Green Bay, Wis. The portable rink will be set up on the north half of Lambeau Field, with total seating of 38,000-40,000 expected for the game, including indoor club seats and private boxes. Portable bleachers will be placed on the field at the south end of the rink. Details on when and how tickets will be available are still being developed and will be announced later.
