HOST SUPERINTENDENT RODNEY KILCOYNE, CGCS, began his golf course career as a caddy in 1957 at a private course in Northern Iowa c They allowed the caddies to play on Monday mornings and he has been hooked on golf courses ever since. Following three years of service in the Army he began working at "Concord Muni,f as it was called then in 1967. Progressing through the ranks of seasonal laborer, greenskeeper, and assistant, he became the Superintendent in 1974 when Bill Cambra took a management position with the newly built Concord Pavilion. Three years of driving to Sacramento at night, ended with a B.S. degree in Park Management from California State University Sacramento in 1977 c Since 1978 Rod has served as an elected official on the Contra Costa Resource and Conservation District. Concord Municipal Golf Course was built in 1962 utilizing Concord Public Works employees and equipment. The golf course was designed by Bob Baldock and opened for play in 1963. Freeway construction in 1975 changed five holes on the front side next to the freeway. Re-design work was done by Robert Graves. When the course was reopened for play after the freeway project it decided to drop the "Concord Muni" title and rename it Diablo Creek Golf Course, after the creek which passes through the golf course. We found out in 1982 that the "creek" can be a river when approximately 1/3 of the golf course was flooded. The most difficult part of the course is getting a tee time, since we play a 100,000 rounds a year. Dear Editor, The golf world has lost a great golfer. "Babe" Brinkworth's heart gave out November 16. "Babe" truly loved golf. He played the game right handed all of his life. Many days I could hear him brag about the 11 putt nine he had. It was the only way he could come close to par. Babe's father was a Canadian golf club maker and golf course superintendent at Jasper Park Golf Club and Resort. "Babe" and Mollie, his wife, loved to travel in their mobil camper. "Babe" was very content to stay home and repair and build golf clubs. His collection of old Hickory shaft clubs was one of the best. He studied the game, knew the clubs, and the history of golf. He made a point to seek out the club makers all over the world. The superintendents could get a sympathetic ear about Toro Equipment from "Babe". 1 have known Mr. Toro since 1957 and have tried to get him to say a sour word about a toro mistake. Never would he put down the "red iron". He was inovative in getting input into a new machine. He loved to take pictures. His pictures of golf course maintenance areas were classic. "Babes" last few years were spent enjoying "Deep Cliff" his home course. He made and marketed a club called "THE BABE". I know that the "Ole Babe" has a great starting time in heaven. He might even be playing with a golfer with an honest handicap.
