E - Gazette Mk II New Zealand Antique & Historical Arms Association Inc. #4 April 2011 EDITORIAL There has been no shortage of opportunities for collectors to add to their collections over the past 3 months and the next 3 months looks to provide even more opportunities. We have had the Dargaville, Otorohanga and Napier Gun Shows and the South Canterbury Auction (Price list page 11) and looking to the next 3 months there is the Auckland Arms Fair, Taranaki Auction, Ted Rogers Auction, Ruahine Auction, Carvell s Auction and Whangarei Gun Show. Many of these events are organised by NZAHAA members, or NZAHAA members are involved in some way. Even if you are not in the market for buying at the present time, these gun shows and auctions offer a valuable opportunity to view and handle arms that you might otherwise not see and also the opportunity to meet and talk to other collectors. If you have comments to make or news or articles to contribute, send them to oilyrag@xtra.co.nz All views (and errors) expressed here are those of the Editor and not necessarily those of the NZAHAA Inc. Phil Cregeen, Editor oilyrag@xtra.co.nz NZAHAA AGM AND TARANAKI BRANCH AUCTION Our Annual General Meeting will be held in New Plymouth of Saturday 8 April commencing at 9.30 am, and will be followed by Taranaki Branch Auction. The Notice of meeting and Auction Catalogue has been sent to all financial members, however since publication more lots have been added to the catalogue, the revised catalogue may be viewed on the NZAHAA website www.antiquearms.org.nz on the Home page under News. FIREARMS SAFETY All collectors of firearms have a responsibility for firearms safety whether they are active shooters or not, so I make no apology for including this information received from the Mountain Safety Council. Over the past 10 years there have been 112 non intentional shooting incidents, 24 causing death. A primary cause of death (9 cases) has been hunters failing to positively identify their target, however another primary cause of death (10 cases) has been caused by loaded firearms that should not have been loaded, such as in a car or home. Last year there were 12 reported incidents resulting in one death. None of us can afford to become complacent, no matter how experienced we think we are, these incidents have been caused by people of all ages and level of experience. While all seven of the basic rules of firearms safety are important, always identify your target beyond all doubt and only load a firearm when ready to fire. Last year 9,764 new people applied for a Firearms Licence and received safety training from MSC Firearms Instructors. Every firearms user could benefit from re-familiarizing themselves with the Arms Code and in particular all parts of the seven basic rules of firearms safety. If you are an experienced shooter have you thought of giving something back to the shooting community by becoming a Firearms Instructor? For more information contact: MSC Firearms Programme Manager Mike Spray Tel. 0800 486 7233.

INTERSTING BAYONET ( Photos: Phil Cregeen) Many Martin Henry carbines were relegated to Cadet Force use around the turn of the last Century. Bayonets for these were also shortened to be more manageable for small soldiers. Illustrated below is a Pattern 1860 Yataghan Bayonet shortened to a 13 in blade. Originally 20.5 mm the muzzle ring has been bushed twice, once to 18.5 mm for the Martini Henry and a second bush to 14.5 mm. The pommel is marked RAMC (Royal Army Medical Corp) over 7177, and dated 12/02, and has a Birmingham repair inspection mark. I have been unable to determine what rifle this reduced MRD and Martini Henry mortise would fit, or was it just carried as a side arm by the RAMC? Your comments would be welcome to oilyrag@xtra.co.nz Ref: (B224) British & Commonwealth Bayonets by ID Skennerton & R Richardson NEW ZEALAND ARMS REGISTER a joint projected sponsored by NZAHAA and NZSG The team is compiling information on NZ Police batons and would be interested to hear from any member who can provide images and information on different types. There is some uncertainty surrounding the issue dates of certain arms, in as much as they are frequently marked with a date (such as N80Z or NZ 98), but examples have been noted where this date predates the manufacturers date. So the question is, does this NZ date represent the issue date or a contract date? If any member has found documents providing instructions to Store keepers or Armourers on how New Zealand Arms are to be marked the team would be pleased here from you. Please send details to oilyrag@xtra.co.nz INTERESTING WEBSITES (Ctrl+click on the links below) http://www.mjnoble.co.uk/catalogue.asp http://www.peterdyson.co.uk/acatalog/ Now this is a gun show!!!

LETTER TO THE EDITOR On a visit to NZ in February this year, I attended a meeting of the Auckland branch NZAHAA, and found to my delight, the same enthusiastic bunch of collectors. There were 30 in attendance and at least 16 table displays, each member giving a brief talk on their display, it was good to see a young man of around 16 speak with authority on his display pistol. His parents were also there. I could remember holding this young man on my lap as a baby, so it is great to see some of the younger generation participating. The Range officer called for volunteers to bring a variety of firearms from Wheelock s, Flintlock s, Percussion to modern military cartridge to the next shoot to demonstrate and explain to some prospective new members what collecting is all about, once again this was very popular. Well done Auckland Branch, I m proud to be a life member. John Carter P.S. Have included an article that maybe of use for your E-Gazette John s article will appear in a later issue of the printed Gazette. There is a preview below Ed. PREVIEW 10 bore Heavy Navy pattern Brunswick Percussion Rifle By John Carter In August 2005 I acquired the above weapon to add to my British Sea Service Collection. This was the first one I ve seen come up for sale in the past 40 or so years I have been collecting. These rifles are extremely rare as only 100 of them were ever made. So you can imagine my delight when the telephone bid was knocked down to yours truly. Sure I paid a lot for it, but when you ve got to have it, money becomes less important. I then had to rummage round to sell off other bits of my collection to compensate. Don t we all? NAPIER GUN SHOW This two day show, held on the 12 & 13 of March, was the first organised by Hawkes Bay Branch for several years. Held in Napier Army drill hall, it comprised of a mix of members displays and sales tables. The show attracted a good response from the general public and it was good to see members from every North Island Branch in attendance. Another great opportunity to catch up with old friends, make new contacts and also view some excellent collections. Below are some of the displays.

SHOOTING MILITARY PISTOLS by A J O Neil Do you collect military pistols? Have you ever wished you could legally shoot any of your collection? Well it may not be as difficult as you think! In recent years Pistol New Zealand has introduced a new pistol match which has allowed the B registration of many classic military pistols. Quote: Pistol NZ Classic Pistol Match recognises the importance of the early handguns used in the development of our sport, and provides a competitive environment for their continued safe and valued use. So as long as you don t mind serving out the six month probation period and doing the mandatory 12 shoots per year required to get and maintain a B (pistol) license endorsement you can now legally shoot any of the pistols in the approved pistol list. The only other requirement is that any C registered pistol must be reregistered as a B category pistol before it can legally be used on a Pistol N.Z. range. For further information about joining a pistol club near you contact the Pistol N.Z. Executive Officer on 06 870 7575 or visit their website at http://www.pistol.org.nz/ Brief Description of the Classic Pistol Match The match is shot at 10 and 25 meters and the course of fire consists of 48 rounds shot in 6 round strings. Strings shot at 10 meters are timed at 4, 6 and 8 seconds per 6 rounds and 15 seconds per 6 rounds at 25 meters. Regardless of pistol capacity all pistols are loaded with 6 rounds so there is no particular advantage to semiautomatic pistols over revolvers. KEEP YOUR BARREL COOL Thanks to Kim McGrath for these photos and story HMAS Brisbane had a 5 inch shell explode in the barrel on the gun line during the Vietnam war. Fortunately no-one was injured. The barrel just got so hot it exploded the shell in the breech. She went to Subic Bay where the Yanks removed the Mount and she went back to the gun line just using her X turret until repairs had been made. PO Box 275, Whangarei, 0140 BUY SELL OR SWAP (Free advertising for NZAHAA members for 2 months) WANTED I am sourcing props on the film Tintin for Weta Digital here in Wellington. One of the props I am trying to find is a late 1940s era marine signal/flare gun. As the Tintin movie is animated, the process of using props in the film is fairly simple. First we hire the item, then photograph it in our studio from many angles. These photographs are then given to the animators who create an animated version of the object. The prop is then given back to its owner. I wondered if there was anyone in the association who would be interested in hiring out their flare gun for a short time? A fee could be negotiated of course and we would be open to the idea of the owner supervising the photo shoot if they wished. I understand how valuable and rare a signal gun of this kind would be. If there was a suitable flare gun in your collection or you knew of anyone else who you think may be interested in this, I would really appreciate hearing from them. I look forward to hearing from you, Many thanks, Nicole Nicole Spackman VFX Props Buyer TINTIN Weta Digital, Record Press, 127 Wexford Street, Miramar, Wellington nspackman@wetafx.co.nz +64 27 637 5476 cell +64 4 909 6188 dd +64 380 9263 fax *WANTED: Browning Pistol 9mm Long, Model 1903/07 with preferably Turkish issue markings.
