Gwinnett Braves (3-0, 1 st in IL South, 0.5 GA) RHP Tim Corcoran (7-4, 3.15 ERA in MiLB in 2012) Sunday, April 7, 2013 2:05 PM Coolray Field, Lawrenceville, GA Game #4 of 144 Radio: WDUN 550 AM / 102.9 FM G-Braves Sweep Knights in Twinbill: The Gwinnett Braves moved to 3-0 on the young season with a doubleheader sweep of the Charlotte Knights at Coolray Field last night, winning 6-4 and 2-1. Ernesto Mejia provided the pop in game one with a pair of home runs, including a three-run clout to the picnic tent in left as part of a four-run first inning. Mejia s second blast, a solo shot to left, came in the fifth to raise the lead to 6-2. Starter David Hale (W, 1-0) yielded two runs over 5.0 innings and struck out five to win his Triple-A debut. Wirfin Obispo allowed two runs in the seventh, but Cole McCurry (S, 1) preserved the win. In game two, a two-out, two-run single by Sean Kazmar in the second proved to be the winner. Daniel Rodriguez, David Carpenter (W, 1-0) and Yohan Flande (S, 1) combined for just one run over 7.0 innings. Andre Rienzo (L, 0-1) and Tony Pena, Jr. (L, 0-1) each started and lost for the Knights. Historic Start: At 3-0, the Gwinnett Braves are off to their best start in their brief five-year history the G-Braves stand atop the International League South Division by a half-game over Durham (2-0) Gwinnett is one of four IL teams to start 3-0 (Buffalo, Pawtucket, Louisville). The club s previous best start through three games was 2-1, accomplished in 2009 and 2010. Mighty Mejia: Last year s IL Rookie of the Year and postseason All-Star Ernesto Mejia enjoyed a huge night at the plate last night, going a combined 3-for-6 with a double, two home runs, three runs scored and four RBI in the twinbill. Mejia connected on a three-run homer and solo shot, both off Charlotte right-hander Andre Rienzo in game one, giving him his first Triple-A multi-homer game. The two blasts ties his single-game career high, last reached on 9/3/11 with Double-A Mississippi at Carolina. Mejia hit.296 with 24 home runs and an ILbest 92 RBI a year ago he now has 116 career homers and 495 RBI in 11 MiLB seasons. Impressive Starts: Marietta, Georgia s David Hale notched his first career Triple-A victory in his debut start with the G-Braves last night vs. Charlotte (5.0 IP, 5 H, 2 ER, 5 K). Hale, rated the No. 16 prospect in the Braves system by Baseball America, went 8-4 with a 3.77 ERA in 27 starts with Double-A Mississippi last year. Sean Gilmartin, rated the No. 4 prospect in the Braves system by BA, also won in his first start of the year on 4/5 vs. Charlotte (5.0 IP, 6 H, 1 ER, 4 K). Atlanta s first-round pick in 2011, Gilmartin also opened strong with Double-A Mississippi a year ago, firing 6.0 scoreless, two-hit innings in a no-decision vs. Mobile on 4/7/12. Pastornicky Starts 5-for-5: With a single in his first at-bat of game one last night, Tyler Pastornicky opened the season a perfect 5-for-5 that included his four-hit effort on Opening Night, 4/5 (4-for-4, 2 2B, R, RBI, SB). The four hits ties Pastornicky s single-game career high, last accomplished on 7/5/11 with Double-A Mississippi when he hit for the cycle (4-for-6, 2B, 3B, HR, 2 RBI) in a 14-7 win vs. Jackson. Though hitless in his last five at-bats, Pastornicky still leads the club with a.500 average (5-for-10), ranking him T-3 rd in the IL in hitting. Saving the Day: After posting just 29 saves (13 th in the IL) in 143 games last year, the Gwinnett bullpen has already produced three saves this season. Andrew Russell struck out four over 2.0 scoreless, hitless innings and stranded an inherited runner for the save on 4/5 vs. CHA Cole McCurry allowed two of three inherited runners to score, but earned the final out for the save in game one on 4/6 vs. CHA Yohan Flande served up a solo homer but nothing more over the final 2.0 innings, striking out three for the save in game two on 4/6 vs. CHA. Ready for the Task: At the helm of the Gwinnett Braves this season is manager Randy Ready. A former Major League infielder and Major League hitting coach, Ready was named the second skipper in G-Braves history as the replacement for Dave Brundage (now with Lehigh Valley) on 11/12/12.
