I hope you managed to get some rest after all the house visits and festivities. This year aside from celebrating with relatives, I had the pleasure of being invited to two enjoyable parties with friends from NSRCC. One threw a big bash to celebrate his half century birthday while another organised a party to celebrate his first golf Hole-in-one. Time for me to increase gym visits to burn off the excess calories! Exciting news is that there are plans to expand our gym with more equipment and facilities, so stay tuned! In this issue, we have included information on the reconfiguration of our Changi golf course. This is due to the expansion of the airport and its supporting infrastructure. In the short term, there will be some construction and minor diversion much like road works you see around East Coast area recently, but I am always optimistic that things will be much better in the end. More exciting developments will be coming up and you can get information about it in our future RV issues, our website and on our Facebook page. Kranji will be the venue of our Charity golf event this year where our club will be raising funds for the elderly. Captain and Greens committee members will be organising this event and if you know them like I do, you can be sure of having a great time! Read about how the Bowling Centre celebrated Chinese New Year with their unique Ang Pow Bowl event. And for the second time, NSRCC s staff bowling team clinched the Championship title at the staff interclub bowling competition. We also turned the spotlight on Uncle Tham, who has been with us since the Club s conception, and is our oldest staff. As the nation celebrates SG50, find out what s his secrets to staying hale and hearty! See you around. Sze Wah theeditorspeaks

seen&heard resort view 4 resort view 5 A Exclusive! He Proves Age Is Really Just A Number Mr Tham Boon Siang, affectionately known as Uncle Tham not only within the walls of our lively Jackpot room but throughout NSRCC, is definitely no stranger to both club staff and members. This year marks 21 years of his service with us, which he so gaily talks about when he recalls his happy moments in the club, memories which he holds dearly. seen&heard Team NSRCC Strikes Gold! eam NSRCC had once again done us proud at the T 2nd Staff Inter-Club Bowling Competition held on 26 Jan 2015 at Orchid Country Club. Besides the fun and interactions, the team (together with their pongpong team) saw intense competition amongst the 10 participating clubs. The team did not get off to a great start, coming in second last place in the first game. Despite not flourishing in the beginning, the team went against all odds and pulled through, emerging triumphant after three games as the CHAMPION with a total score of 1934. Uncle Tham has loyally stood by the club since its humble beginnings in 1994, where he had just switched over from his previous career in banking, and set foot on an entirely new journey, one that would see him through all the way till now. I enjoy working in this environment, the people are friendly, working relationships have turned into longlasting friendships with so many people. The job is easy for me, and I basically love what I do says Uncle Tham when asked what is the secret to his many years of service with NSRCC. March 9th 2015 is definitely set to be no ordinary day for him as he turns 80 years old, making him the oldest staff in the entire club! Remember now, age is truly just a number. His hale and hearty appearance along with his amiable nature, truly makes this man one of a kind! He has worked this long as he is a firm believer that an active mind is better than a stagnant one. You need to keep your mind awake and active at this age, and I preferred doing this all these years. I feel that if you stay at home and not do anything, you slowly begin to deteriorate. NSRCC s Scores : 501 (1st game); 671 (2nd game); 762 (3rd game) The Champions - Team NSRCC 1st Runner Up - Singapore Cricket Club Uncle Tham posing at the then-jackpot Room! Uncle Tham intends to retire towards the end of this year, so that he gets to spend time with his family and also enjoy the golden years of his life. His wishes for the club? I hope to see the club grow even more, especially with all the developments it is undergoing so that we can attract younger NSmen to be a part of something that is set to be big. And here is wishing you Uncle Tham, a very Happy Birthday and may you be blessed in abundance! 2nd Runner Up - Warren Golf & Country Club Uncle Tham in the middle with colleagues-turnedfriends at a wedding dinner! Friendships that were made to last, Uncle Tham and friends (also Staff both present & past) of NSRCC.

resort view 8 resort view 9 Golf101 Rule 23 Loose Impediments onpar onpar Dear Golfers Greenside Matters FEB 2015 Gong Xi Fa Cai! And here s wishing you lots of birdies, eagles, hole-in-one and continuing improvements to your game and handicap in 2015. Definition: Loose impediments are natural objects such as stones, leaves, twigs, and branches. However, loose soil and sand are considered loose impediments on putting green but not elsewhere. We will tee off the New Year by sharing a few features, which have been added to the club, as we continually look at ways to improve the golfing experience for your guests and you. CHANGES TO THE GOLF COURSE & DRIVING RANGE AT SAFRA LOCATION WEF 1st March 2015, another phase of changes is upon us as we close Army Course for reconfiguration. We will use a temporary 9-holes based on the available space left from our old Air Force Course. The authorities have allowed us to utilize the land, while we reconfigure our course. Changi location will still have 18 holes open for play and the course will play to a par 71. The club plans to complete the reconfiguration works by December 2015 and members can look forward to playing on the new course then. The driving range will also be affected during the reconfiguration of the golf course and will be torn down. A temporary driving range has been planned during this interim period until a new driving range is built. For more details on the development, do look out for Resort View March/April 2015 issue and also on our club website. Situation: Loose impediment behind golfer s ball Picking up loose impediment - Yes CHANGES TO COURSE MARKING FOR GOLF COUSE AT SAFRA LOCATION Following feedback from members, we have reviewed the course marking for Navy Hole#8. The area in question is located behind the green, and if a player s golf ball comes to rest within the shrubs and is deemed unplayable by the golfer, the options for dropping a ball are limited and may result in delays. After reviewing the situation and in the interests of safety and pace of play, the Greens Committee has decided to implement Internal Out of Bounds (OB) beyond the buggy track behind the green. The Internal OB will stretch from the far end of the pond (running along the Hole#9 fairway) till the end of White Tee Hole #9. Any ball beyond the buggy track behind of Hole #8 green and any ball flying beyond the pond and landing on the Hole #9 fairway is considered OB. ERROR IN REPORTING HANDICAP MATTERS IN DECEMBER 2014 GREENSIDE MATTERS In the December 2014 Greenside matter, it was mentioned that if a non-submission of scores was found, the system will automatically submit a score of 2 under par, so do ensure accurate and timely submission. We would like to clarify that this is incorrect. The correction should read as, The system will automatically submit a score equal to the lowest differential in your scoring record. Happy golfing! FEB 2015 MAR 2015 Kicking loose impediment - No Using club to knock away loose impediment - No Brushing them off with your club will certainly move loose soil and therefore incur a penalty of two strokes. Chris Wood of European Tour incurred a 2-stroke penalty at the Alfred Dunhill Links Tournament in October 2014, on the last day of the tournament. For this infringement, he finished placing 9th instead of 5th, reducing his prize money by half, to EUR79,600 from EUR159,200! onpar onpar resort view 10 resort view 11 The Best Feeling in Golf is No Feeling at ALL You ve probably never heard that one before but it is true. Really good players know what it means. When you have all the parts of your swing synchronized each doing their job, each contributing their bit, there will be a feeling of nothingness. In fact, if any one part does do something in excess, you will most likely feel that, and then you would know that something is probably wrong. It s different when you are going through the construction phase of your swing development because feelings are all over the place during that phase. Sometimes you are intentionally feeling something to generate a favourable change in your swing motion. But it is interesting because once all is done and the dust has settled, and you have toiled for many years to create a fluid, efficient, effective golf swing, at the end of the tunnel where you could see that light shining, there will be a swing that has no feeling. And that is the Holy Grail of golf. The Release Another interesting part of the golf swing often misunderstood is the release. And what I would like to point out here is how critical the position of where the centre of mass of the club-head is in relation to your hands in the delivery position on the downswing (see photos below). And emphasise how much that actually dictates the quality of your release through the impact area without you having to do anything else. When the centre of mass of the club, which is really saying the club head, is outside your hands at the delivery position coming down (as in the student on the left), the inertia of the system will do everything in its power to open the club as it comes through the ball. That will result in a slice - a pulling across the ball motion with the club face left open and really any other result would be as a result of some artificial flick of the hands. On the other hand if the club head is slightly under the hands at this delivery position (student on the right), the inertia will work the opposite way it will work the club over, from open to closed, all by its self. Don t you just love science! Now the forces that we are talking about here apparently are that great that most people won t have the strength to resist them. Of course the forces of inertia strengthen with speed. So squaring that club face up at impact may not be such a tricky task but merely a case of practicing getting the club to fall down slightly under the hand line at the delivery position. This needs to be measured using high speed cameras as even the trained naked eye struggles to see exactly where it is. The feeling when you re achieving it is the critical information that the golfer needs to take away. Not too much inside or else you will end up hitting big hooks. If slicing is your predominant ball flight, come and see our qualified PGA Golf Professionals down at the Academy to help put you on the straight and narrow. Phil Brew PGA of Australia & Singapore Temporary Driving Range Information Come 1 April 2015, our current driving range will be torn down and it will make way for our new golf course development. To ensure that members are still able to continue practising, we will be providing a temporary driving range. Please see below for more information of the Temporary Driving Range. 1. LOCATION & OPERATING HOURS The Temporary Driving Range will be located at the far end of our current driving range Day range only and operating hours will be from 0700hr to 1900hrs, last sale of 50balls will be at 1830hrs. 2. FERRY SERVICE A ferry service will be provided for members between the Clubhouse and Temporary Driving Range. It is not advisable to walk to the Temporary Driving Range. The ferry service runs at 15 mins intervals and begins at 0700hrs. Pick Up point is located just outside the buggy dispatch area, and at the temporary buggy parking area at Driving Range Office In event of heavy rain or Cat-1, there may be delays to the timing of the ferry service and the pick-up point will be relocated inside the covered buggy dispatch area for shelter. Last pick from the club house pick up point will be at 1830hrs and last trip from driving range back to club house will be at 1900hrs daily. 3. FACILITIES 35 Covered Practise Bays Driving Range Office Ball Dispensing Machine Golf Academy Office Snack Bar Rest Room Facilities 4. frontpage frontpage resort view 12 resort view 13 Updates from NSRCC s Town Hall Session NSRCC Unveils its Future Plans to Through a 3rd Town Hall Session OOn January 9, members of NSRCC were invited to attend the Club s third consecutive Town Hall Session to be briefed on the latest updates and future plans of NSRCC. This session was aimed at providing our members with a bigger picture on how the club intends to move forth to meet their needs. The session was hosted by Mr Teo Eng Dih, Director (Manpower, MINDEF) and NSRCC Vice-President. Also present were BG Tung Yui Fai, (Director, National Service Affairs, MINDEF) and, Strategic Review Committee; Mr Tan Kah Han,, Redevelopment and Greens Committee; as well as Mr Ng Heng Chew, General Manager of the Club. Mr Ng commenced the session by bringing our members through how the redevelopment works stemmed from the announcement, made back in February 2014 on the land take issue. He also mentioned that the impact of the land take will be multifaceted. Through the support of Ministry of Defence (MINDEF), the Club is working closely with various agencies and consultants to come about with a comprehensive set of plans for the future of NSRCC. A Strategic Review committee spearheaded by BG Tung has completed a project to study the long term positioning of NSRCC. The Committee has sought feedback from our members and NSmen to help chart out some of the new additions to the club. The range of recommendations includes a new 9-hole golf course, driving range, recreational hub, additional chalets, banquet hall and F&B outlets. A large part of the development costs will be primarily funded by MINDEF and the remaining amounts will be taken from the Club s reserves. It was also shared during the session that part of the leasehold land from Air Force and Army will be returned to the government. The remaining land will eventually be reconstructed to form a new 9-hole course. In the meantime, Navy Course would have been the only 9-hole available for play. Fortunately, the Club was successful in negotiating with the Civil Aviation Authority of Singapore (CAAS) to extend the use of the Temporary Occupation License (TOL) land at Air Force Course from September 2014 to November 2015, for the purpose of a temporary 9-hole, to maintain an 18-hole playable course during this period. The new 9-hole course will be constructed from March to December 2015. The land at the current Executive Par 3 Course and the Driving Range will be used for this new course. A temporary Driving Range is currently being constructed behind the existing one, and will be open for use by the end of March 2015, which will ensure that members are still able to continue practising. In terms of membership, given the reduction in golfing capacity, the Club will continue to monitor its membership base and adjust it appropriately. Compared to the peak membership base, the current member-to-course ratio is much lower and will provide a comfortable supply of golf slots to members. A new 9-hole course would be constructed utilising the remaining land of the Air Force Course, Army Course and the Driving Range.

resort view 16 resort view 17 Updates from NSRCC s Town Hall Session frontpage frontpage Hole-by-Hole Description of our new 9-hole course Recommended Future Developments Funding New 9-hole golf course A large budget is needed to: New Driving Range Reconfigure the golfing facilities. New Executive Golf Course (EGC) Develop additional social facilities on the additional land. New Recreational Hub New Multipurpose sports hall Source of funds: New Banquet hall & restaurant The development will be funded primarily by MINDEF, and New Additional chalets the remaining amount will be from the Club s reserve. MAJOR TIMELINE Closure of AF Closure of Army, Par-3 Opening of Downsize Par-3 & Driving Range Construction of new 9 holes new 9 holes Hole 1: Tees for the starting hole are located on the right of the existing driving range area, and slightly elevated. Existing trees currently diving existing hole A1 from existing hole A3 will be retained. This will be a particularly challenging hole considering its length and the encroachment of lake across the playline between the drive target zone and green. Two wide areas of fairway permit shorter hitters to follow with a full or shorter pitch to the large green. Sep 14 Mar 15 Dec 15 Q4 17 Return TOL land Construction of temporary 9 holes Temporary 9 holes in operation Temporary driving range in operation 5-hole Par-3 course Re-locate and operate Temporary 9-hole course Construct new 9-hole to be permanently temporary Driving Range will be played from Mar golf course from Mar closed by Mar 2015. in Mar 2015. 2015 to Nov 2015. 2015 to Nov 2015. Hole 2: The rear tee is located near to the current hole A6 island tee. The fairway cuts through the nature area between existing A8 green and A9 trees. The new fairway will rise from current A9 tee area to the turning point (driving target area). The fairway crosses existing hole A2 and A1 fairways to a greensite near the middle of the current driving range. Large bunkers will guard the right approach to the green. Temporary 9-hole Course during Redevelopment Phase Our Navy and temporary 9-hole course will form an 18-holes playable course over the period of March-November 2015. This will be during the same time frame that the new 9-hole course will be constructed. 7 6 5 4 3 Hole 3: The classic risk and reward short Par 5 hole witll be the Signature Hole. Tees will be located at current driving range and current levels along the play line will generally be retained. The arm of the lake cuts across the hole at 270m from the back tee and a wide landing area is available around the 240m mark. The is an option for long hitters to try and reach the green in two shots but bunkers will be on the line of play and close proximity to the lake on this line, make the choice high risk. 8 9 1 2

frontpage frontpage resort view 18 resort view 19 Updates from NSRCC s Town Hall Session Hole 4: This is the existing A6 hole slightly shortened by discontinuing the use of the island tee and with the tees located left of existing group in order to allow for future relocation of Navy 8 Tees. Bunkers will be reshaped and the fairway at the 200 meters range from the back tee raised to provide an enhanced view of the green from that location The green will be reconstructed identical to the existing. Hole 7: All boundary trees and tree groups along the entry road and entering into the course area will be retained. The fairway will be undulating with the green elevated slightly above the fairway at the turning point location. Fairway bunkers will be added each side of the drive target area to make demands on accurate placement. Steep slopes down to the rear left of the angled green will impact the slightly drawn approach shot. Hole 5: This hole is played from the existing A7 tees and the pond just beyond, to a greensite currently occupied by A3 green. The pond right of the existing A8 tees is in-filled but the narrow stretch of water just short of the greensite retained as a strategic feature of the hole. Water encroaching close to both sides of the fairway near the drive target area will encourage precise driving or preferably the use of a three wood or utility club from the tee. Hole 8: Much of the fairway proposed for this hole is occupied by the tree and bush covered ridge separating the short course from the Air Force Course. Clearing and earthworks will result in a receptive fairway. Several rows of trees will be retained to separate this hole from the par 3 sixth hole. Over conservative approaches to rear pin position may end in the large shallow bunker. Hole 6: Hole A6 is played from the existing A/F 1 tees to a green located near the existing fairway bunkers location. A long par 3 with a long green angled to the playline and guarded by large bunkers to the left front and right rear. There are difficult pin positions at the left rear of the putting surface whereas the front right half of the green is particularly accessible. The narrow entry from tees to fairway will be retained. Hole 9: This hole follows the routing of existing hole Air Force 9 from roughly the drive target area to the greensite. Advice is that the channel to the right may be widened up to 10m in the future. This can be achieved at the time by incorporation of a retaining wall beside the access track possibly without removal of existing screening trees. A green identical to the existing green with a relatively wide front and narrow rear pin positions is ideal for the new par 3 hole situation. The Club aims to continue to step up its efforts to ensure that the various implementations that make up the entire process of the redevelopment are carried out. will also be updated in a timely manner on the works that are being carried out. *A video of our new 9-hole course has been uploaded on our Website & YouTube page for your viewing. **For members that require further information on this matter, please contact our Corporate Communications Team at corpcomms@nsrcc.com.sg

In&AroundNSRCC In&AroundNSRCC resort view 20 resort view 21 Kick-Start the Journey to Your Fitness Goals with Kickboxing! ickboxing isn t just a full-contact sport! It is also often practiced around the world for self-defence and, in recent years, K general fitness. Combining hand-eye coordination, core control and cathartic moves, kickboxing is a great way to improve physical health and fitness, leading to weight loss, improved body strength and stress relief. There will definitely be a program that suits your specific need, everyone can join and NO EXPERIENCE IS NECESSARY. Yusri, our Fitness Supervisor, will make the necessary arrangements for you, while working on your fitness goals! Aerification: The Why and How M any golfers see the aerification process as hindrance; it eats up time when the course could be open for play and the ground is sandy and bumpy after as well. Indeed, aerification has a bad rep for ruining the playability of greens by leaving holes that can affect putting for many days before healing. However, aerification is actually a necessary and highly beneficial golf course practice; as that saying goes prevention is better than cure, preventive maintenance is an integral part of successful golf course management. Aerification is a mechanical process that creates more air space in the soil and promotes deeper rooting, usually by pulling out cores from the turfgrass system. Sand topdressing then fills the holes in the ground to retain air space in the soil, making it easier for roots to grow. The use of sand also improves drainage and resists compaction of soil. Thatch refers to a layer of organic matter on the surface that is an accumulation of dead stems, leaves and roots. In addition to thatch, golfers and machinery tend to compact the roots beneath the grass, depriving the grass root systems of oxygen and nutrients. The periodic reduction of compaction and thatch via aerification brings a myriad of benefits for the turf. The cores made in the ground increase water penetration rate, nutrient availability and exchange of oxygen to the plants, in turn promoting new growth. Over time, density of the turf is increased. Especially at courses with high traffic, aerification is crucial in ensuring that greens stay healthy and in tip-top shape for the long run. While the temporary inconvenience is unfortunate, remember that the greens and fairways that you enjoy now are due to aerification done in the past! Sweeping up the cores Various types of tines used for aerification Benefits of Kickboxing Fitness: Kickboxing Fitness can be done by almost anyone. The pairing is so well established that the practice known as yum cha 饮茶, or drinking tea is automatically assumed to involve eating Dim Sum as well. The Cantonese coined another name that better illustrates the modern Dim Sum dining experience: tan cha 叹茶, meaning enjoying tea. Indeed, dining on Dim Sum these days is a leisurely, almost luxurious, activity. Interestingly, the name Dim Sum can be translated as either a bit of heart or touching the heart. The former is most definitely a misnomer; as any savvy foodie knows, a lot of heart goes into producing quality Dim Sum, delicate morsels as they are. The effort put forth in handmaking them is directly reflected in every aspect, from presentation, feel, to taste. Well-made, high quality Dim Sum will definitely touch your heart.
