(Orange Park) No. 22 Center (ESPNU HoopGurlz 100) All-First Coast Player of the Year (Florida Times- Union) Four Sign in Early Period Sooners Haul a Highly-Rated Class OU head women s basketball coach Sherri Coale announced Wednesday the Class of 2011 high school seniors who will join her program next season. Sharane Campbell (Spencer, Okla.), DaShawn Harden (Olathe, Kan.), Kaylon Williams (Midwest City, Okla.) and Katherine Zander (Altamonte Springs, Fla.) filed National Letters of Intent with the University of Oklahoma. These four players are very talented young athletes who individually and collectively have a very high ceiling, Coale said. They are players who welcome the expectations that come with competing in an Oklahoma uniform, and they are each incredibly driven to continue and build upon the traditions of our program. Harden, the top-rated player in the Sooners class, led St. Thomas Aquinas High School to the Kansas Class 5A State Championship Game last year. DaShawn has great quickness and exceptional offensive instincts. She can shoot it and she can break down the defense with the dribble at will. Rated the No. 6 point guard in the ESPNU HoopGurlz 100, Harden averaged 13.7 points, 4.3 steals and 3.1 assists as a junior and was named first team all-state. Williams is a 6-3 power forward rated among the top 20 at her position by all recruiting services. With averages of 11.4 points, 8.0 rebounds and 3.3 blocks, Williams helped Midwest City High School claim a Class 6A State Championship and undefeated record against in-state competition as the Bombers finished among the nation s top 25 high school programs. Kay-Kay is a terrific athlete who has the potential to be a great rebounder and scorer. Campbell, a 5-10 combo guard from Star Spencer High School, stays in-state with her commitment to OU. Rated No. 12 among small forwards and No. 66 overall by Blue Star Report, Campbell has a history of success on the basketball court dating back to 2006 when her summer club team, Air Oklahoma Stars, won the AAU National Championship. Sharane is a strong, fast competitor. She has a knack for drawing fouls and being around the basketball. Zander, a 6-4 post rated the No. 22 center in the ESPNU HoopGurlz 100, took Orange Park High School to its best season in more than three decades by contributing 10.6 points and 11.5 rebounds per game on the way to a 27-3 record and regional final apperance. Katherine is one of the most disciplined young athletes we have ever recruited. She has size and is versatile on both ends of the floor. The Florida Times-Union 2010 Girls Basketball Player of the Year is also a champion swimmer, winning a state title in the 50-meter freestyle as a sophomore. Zander will be the first OU women s basketball player to come from the Sunshine State. Robinson Takes Over Oklahoma s Danielle Robinson was the season s first Big 12 Women s Basketball Player of the Week and made a case for week two with a second straight 20-point performance against Western Illinois. Robinson had the best first half of her college career with 18 points in the opening period. The senior guard took over with five minutes before halftime, scoring 12 consecutive for OU off three steal-to-fast break layup conversions, four free throws and a good jumper. Against Milwaukee in OU s first game, the preseason All-America candidate scored 16 of her 20 after halftime as Oklahoma wrestled a three-point advantage to a 17-point victory. During one stretch early in the second period, Robinson scored 14 of 16 Sooner points and counted the assist on the field goal that wasn t hers. Stifling Defense Oklahoma s defense stifled the Milwaukee Panthers in its season-opening road win with the Sooners scoring 29 of their 76 points off 33 Milwaukee turnovers, while allowing just 32 field goal attempts. Against Western Illinois, OU pulled the trick again by forcing 23 turnovers and allowing just 14 field goals. This season, Oklahoma has scored 54 points off 56 opponent turnovers and allowed just 29 field goals. Freshmen Combo Makes Noise Freshmen guards Aaryn Ellenberg and Morgan Hook had impressive collegiate debuts for the Sooners in their win at Milwaukee. The duo combined for 27 points, the most for a pair of OU freshmen in a single game since Danielle Robinson (20) and Carlee Roethlisberger (eight) scored 28 against South Carolina on Dec. 30, 2007. Ellenberg, starting in her first game, scored the games first six points on back-to-back 3-pointers and finished with 14. Hook made four of eight field goals, including three 3s, and was 2-for-2 at the free throw line of 13 points. Freshman center, and Milwaukee native, Nicole Griffin added four and junior college transfer Jelena Cerina scored two points as OU s newcomers accounted for 43 percent of the team s scoring.

The Bulldogs opened the season with big wins on the road, but have struggled in their past two games at home, losing 72-67 to upstart Cal Poly and fending off UC-Irvine, 67-63, after holding a 17-point second half lead. Hayley Munro and Jaleesa Ross lead Fresno with 15 and 14 points per game, respectively. Munro is also the top rebounder, averaging a double-double with 44 boards in four games. Ross is 96 3-pointers shy of becoming the NCAA s all-time leader in the category. Oklahoma Third in Big 12 Vote The University of Oklahoma was selected third in the Big 12 Women s Basketball Coaches Preseason Poll released Oct. 7. Baylor was chosen as the preseason favorite to win the 2010-11 Big 12 women s basketball regular season title for the second consecutive year. Texas A&M, winner of the 2010 Phillips 66 Big 12 Women s Basketball Championship, was picked second and nabbed the other first-place vote. Texas was chosen fourth followed by Iowa State and Kansas. Nebraska, last year s regular season champion, was seventh, followed by Oklahoma State in eighth; Kansas State ninth, Texas Tech in 10th, Missouri 11th and Colorado 12th.
