Soundings Newsletter of South Port Sailing Club May 2017 Message from Commodore, Kelly Johnson As I write this we are only a few days away from launch. This month, SPSC has been a hub of activity as everyone gets ready for the water. Our strong sense of community and the pride we have in our sailing club is apparent as you walk through the grounds. It s evident as you see people helping one other, learning from each other, talking through new projects, or just chatting over a beverage. It s amazing how many jobs turn into 2 person jobs. During the month we had a few great activities at the club including the Happy hour & Trivia night, which saw 70+ people at South Port. Upcoming events in May, include a busy first weekend with Happy Hour & Euchre on the evening of the 5th, the spring work party on the 6th, and the SPSC Yard Sale on the 7th. Club also begins this month, including the new Sunday Turtle Stampede starting once a month on Sundays, from May through October. The first ECPHRF regatta, LMYC Shakedown takes place the weekend of May 20th. May 27th is the first cruise of the season to the Sandbar. Sail A Bration is also fast approaching. The reservation form is included in this issue. With all the activities planned this month, I hope the only ones staying away from the club are the geese! You can register online for club racing and regattas at www.southportsailingclub.com The new monthly Sunday Turtle Stampede Series starts May 21st. From Social Chair, Louise Marentette Hopefully everyone's brains have recovered from the work out on Trivia Night! Thanks to all who turned out, it was another fun evening. Congratulations again to the winning Titanic Trivia Team members Paul & Ann Ramey, Gary Gavin, Matt Draisy, Bev Price and Christine Gignac. It was a close call, coming down to a tie breaker with the Dolsen, Halpin and Hellenbart team. (They generously re-donated their winnings back to the social fund to help with future events. Thanks! ) You guys are all so smart! Next month's happy Hour on Friday May 5th will have hot dogs and make your own tacos for sale. If you stick around after 7pm, the cards are coming out! There will be a FUN Progressive Euchre Tournament in the sun room. Buy in is only $2 and there will be 6 rounds of 8 games each. Everyone will switch partners after each round, just to make things interesting. Don't worry if you aren't the best player, its all in fun. The winning individual will take home 1/2 the money pot. In the main room, for the non euchre aficionado's, there will also be cards available for any game you like. Maybe we could get a wicked game of Go Fish or crazy Eights going, or maybe cribbage or rummy! You could even just sit back, relax and visit. It's up to you! Hope to see you there. The Winners!! 7
From Peter Soles, Harbourmaster On Saturday April 22nd we made an initial check of the channel depths in the lake. The good news is there was 6 to 9 feet of water in the center f the channel, and we expect the 3ater level to continue rising until July. We will recheck it using the Trillium on launch day. Thank you to Norm Rose for the use of his boat and Dave Robichaud and Joylane Gagnon for their help driving and recording the measurements. A Harbour work party was held on April 1st. 15 members came out to support it, and the following jobs were attacked: -A number of loose and rotten dock boards were replaced including one of the supports. -Deck boards and support stringer were installed on the north/south walkway, and it is 80% complete. -The old wood was removed from the two finger docks used by the sailing school, new support stringers were installed, and the dock board replacement was started. This job will be completed before launch. -A hole had started to form near the Gobi mats at the edge of the dock near the gin pole. A repair was made with concrete and rocks (similar repairs in other areas last year seem to be holding up) -John Marentette led a group of people in the construction of the new floating dock for the small boat crane (the old one was rotten) This job is complete, although some more work maybe be needed to improve the stability. Thank you to all members who attended this work party! Spring Work Party Saturday May 6th 10:00 am 8
