Pam and Todd will replay the story of how they made the magical discovery of Watertots a safe and fun environment for mums/ dads and their little ones to explore their very first steps in the water together. SS/INF DRY: The Interface of Fear Yvonne Pianchniarski (WA) Dealing with the fearful in any situation is complex especially when you add water to the equation. Yvonne will workshop an approach she has developed for the fearful swimmer, one that is adaptable and involves exploring the processes of the fear by removing the illogical thought processes that establishes the fear. TSW DRY: Behaviour Management in and Around the Pool Jenny and Rob Schouten (NSW) Rob and Jenny have combined their experience, knowledge and enthusiasm to present a professional and personal approach to working with students with challenging behaviours in the learning environment. Their presentation includes insight into the World of Special Needs and where to now? SS/TSW WET: Freestyle - Stroke Development to Competitive Level Alina Graham (QLD) This session will take you through 4 models of freestyle from learn-to-swim to squad levels. Within each model we will discuss freestyle technique for head position, body position, kick pattern, arm pattern, breathing pattern, breath control and timing plus common faults and drills to develop and correct technique. The end product will help teachers in guiding swimmers through the stages of freestyle and assist swim schools in training their staff on focus points for their levels of teaching freestyle. TSW/TCS Lunch and View the Trade Exhibit 11:45am - 12:45pm Session 2 12:45pm - 1:45pm DRY: Lesson Planning What, When, Where, Why and How Part 1 Sue Warner (AUSTSWIM) and Mike Fitzgerald (Smart Moves In Water) Lesson planning is an integral component that is often skipped or not given the importance that should be given. This session will explore the What, When, Where, Why and How of lesson planning. Using your own experiences, current swim school program, networking with new colleagues and the integration of Smart Planner lesson platform, create dynamic yet skill appropriate lesson plans. Take away from this session a toolbox of ideas for you to develop interesting, stimulating, educational and exciting lesson plans. GEN/SS DRY: Managing a Swim School Nick Cox (VIC) In this session you will learn how to be a more effective Manager. If you run your own swim school, coordinate a swim program or manage a swimming centre, this session will make sure that you don t just survive in your management role but that you thrive! Participants will take home a suite of management tips and tools that include, Business Planning and Growth Strategies, Financial Management, Decision Making, Time Management, Marketing and Promotions, Leadership and People Management. SS DRY: The Middle Eastern Experience Aquatic Education while overcoming Cultural, Political and Social Barriers Kirk Marks (Dubai) Kirk is Dubai based and is providing AUSTSWIM training and swimming and water safety programs throughout the region. This session will be of interest to teachers and presenters who work in any culturally diverse markets and will help them understand many of the issues that may present themselves. While highlighting the health benefits achieved from active participation in swimming and water safety in culturally diverse community. INT WET: 5 to plus 10m Teaching Turns Carol Veldhuyzen (SA) Teaching pivot or flip turns can be included as a fun element of the learn to swim process. Young swimmers can learn to use the traditional pivot turn of breast and fly or the flip turn for free and back easily when incorporated into the learn to swim process. Both turns can be easily taught through a step by step process. Once the basics are mastered it is time to introduce the fifth stroke underwater streamlined fly kick. TSW/TCS Session Changeover 1:45pm - 2:00pm

Session 3 2:00pm - 3:00pm DRY: Infant Development and Expectations Barbara Worth (WA) Barbara will look at the stages of developments for infants classes must have achievable motor, personal and cognitive skills for appropriate age groups. You as the teacher must have a clear understanding of the individuals capabilities that allows you as the facilitator to plan effectively for these classes. Incorporating circuit teaching is a great way to keep your classes moving and having lots of fun too! INF DRY: Be Water Smart Penny Larsen (RLSSA) Being Water Smart is not just about having skills but a combination of water safety knowledge, skills and judgment. Water Smart is an educational resource for teachers to educate primary school children on the essentials of water safety. This toolkit contains learning outcomes, activity sheets and fun video clips plus more. Learn how you can use this resource not only in the classroom but to compliment your learn to swim and water safety lessons. WS DRY: Access and Inclusion Part 1 Meredith King and Jennifer Schembri-Portelli (AUSTSWIM) The AUSTSWIM Access and Inclusion extension course is soon to be released for the aquatic community. You are invited to participate in an interactive overview session of this unique AUSTSWIM extension course, developed to meet the needs of a diverse range of population groups. PWD WET: Lesson Planning What, When, Where, Why and How - Part 2 Sue Warner (AUSTSWIM) After spending time creating, developing and re-engaging the mind to produce lesson plans, we will then take them to the pool to try. Use this time to again streamline already tried and true skills, adaptability of progressions for all those learners in your class, again making the lessons the most productive, skill orientated and exciting classes your swimmers or you have taught in ages. TSW/SS Afternoon Tea and View the Trade Exhibit 3:00pm - 3:30pm Session 4 3:30pm - 4:30pm DRY: Top Tips for Beginner Teachers Melissa Rickwood (NSW) All too often we expect our beginner teachers to hit the ground running. A lot of the time, we as swim school operators assume that our teachers have fundamental knowledge and we forget that it has taken us years to master certain techniques. The concept of this presentation is to provide a list of basics that I find our new teachers have required extra work in and also a template that could be used for in house training at swim schools. The presentation is divided into 2 components stroke correction and teaching effectiveness. TSW/SS DRY: Infants to Nationals Developing Swim Centre Programs within the Big Picture Carol Veldhuyzen (SA) Developing a program that progresses young swimmers from the learn to swim process through to School/Club Country, State and National programs can have added benefits for both swim schools and swim clubs. A clear developmental pathway through the learn to swim program to participation and competitive programs can retain swimmers longer within swim schools and have a flow on effect that produces future swimmers and a ready pool of swimming teachers. TCS/TSW DRY: From Swim Centre Customer to Owner Lindy Crack (TAS) Learn about how you can progress from an AUSTSWIM teacher to swim school manger to business owner. Lindy has made this progression over the past 11 years and will provide you important real life information on how you can achieve this goal. This adventure covers the highs and lows, the sheer volume of work involved in becoming a first-time business owner, the effect it has all had on my family and everything in between. SS/GEN WET: Access and Inclusion Part 2 Meredith King and Jennifer Schembri-Portelli (AUSTSWIM) Put on your swimwear, grab your towel and head to the pool to explore movement in water outside the norm of streamlined, horizontal body position. Challenge your thinking, explore possibilities and experience for yourself balance, control, stability and movement between true vertical and horizontal planes. PWD 2012 National AUSTSWIM Industry Awards Dinner (Additional Fee Applies) 7:00pm SUNDAY 15 th july, 2012 Pre Conference Morning Workshop - Smart Moves In Water (bookings recommended refer to registration form to book) 7:30am - 8:15am For anyone that wants to make their life a little easier for themselves, their staff and their swim school then come and see a demo of how the Smart Planner can help you. This will be a fun and informative time to listen, participate and learn. We will show you how simple it is to have new ideas at the tips of your fingers as well as a place to provide your own valuable information in a safe, secure place for all your team to have easy access to. Delegate Registration (for delegates registered to attend Sunday ONLY). Refreshments and View the Trade Exhibit Opening Address Session Changeover 8:00am - 8:40am 8:45am - 9:15am 9:15am - 9:30am Session 1 DRY: Happy Preschoolers Melissa Rickwood (NSW) 9:30am - 10:30am This session will outline the steps to transform even the most reluctant child into a learn to swim and water safety lesson junkie. Through video footage, and step by step progressive skills, Mel will lead you through some tips and tricks that have worked for her and her little fish. The session will emphasis the importance of progression, consistency, trust, enjoyment and focus on the child s level of readiness to perform certain skills that are matched with their personality types. INF DRY: Integrating Students with a Disability into Mainstream Classes Rebecca Hanrahan (DET NSW) As we move forward to a more inclusive learning environment, AUSTSWIM Teachers are being asked to include students with a range of disabilities into their mainstream learn to swim and water safety classes. This presentation will assist teachers by providing them with the skills and knowledge to understand some of the most common disabilities as well as being able to adapt and modify their lessons to make them inclusive. By looking at alternative communication, equipment modifications and environmental factors, teachers will be able to improve the lessons they offer. PWD DRY: Moving Out of The Lane Meredith King (VIC) Australian parents use the professionalism of swimming teachers to educate their children with swimming skills, believing this will make them safe in water. But does it and are the scales between swimming and water safety balanced? This session aims to challenge the appropriateness and effectiveness of learn to swim curricula and offer some alternatives that programmers and swimming teachers may like to consider. GEN WET: Beat the Boredom Liz Tesone (VIC) Struggling to keep your upper primary schools students engaged in aquatics? Looked at different programming options for secondary schools? Join in the fun and participate in iterative and engaging games and activities for higher levels as well as exploring alternative programming options to keep older students interested. Are you ready for the challenge? TSW Morning Tea and View the Trade Exhibit 10:30am 11:00am

Session 2 11:00am - 12:00pm DRY: Developing a Successful Rural Swim School Jean Kemp (VIC) Over 12 years ago Jean looked at the opportunities in a rural town in Gippsland Victoria close to open water environments including surf, lakes, rivers, flood irrigation for local children to have access to learn to swim and water safety programs. Jean will provide you an overview the steps involved in a building a private swim school including consultation with local shire, research into the demographics of the community to build a pool that met their needs and how the facility provides greater links to the local community. SS DRY: Backstroke Drills and Skills Dick Orbell (QLD) Join swimming coach Dick to take you through backstroke basics and drills to assist you in moving your students through from learn to swim and water safety programs to mini squad. You will take away from this session a toolbox of ideas to teach backstroke starts and turns, and skills and drills for teaching the technique of backstroke. TSW/TCS DRY: Teaching Swimming and Water Safety to Children Kim Alexander (RLSSA) and AUSTSWIM Representatives To understand more about the quality of swimming and water safety lessons and effectiveness of swimming programs, a survey of Teachers of Swimming and Water Safety was conducted by AUSTSWIM and Royal Life Saving Society Australia. Of interest were factors influencing children s swimming and water safety skill and knowledge levels, and the ability of teachers and parents to assess a child s swimming and water safety capability. In addition, several vocational issues were explored. This workshop will discuss findings from the survey followed by discussions on specific topics to validate certain findings of interest to conference participants. GEN WET: Playing it Safe Caroline Jaques (NZ) Often as teachers we find ourselves doing the same water safety practices, and the students get bored. This practical session is designed to give new ideas, making water safety fun and lively whilst still delivering an important message. It s designed so that even swim schools with minimum equipment can still have plenty of ideas and different ways to teach their students.ws/ss Lunch and View the Trade Exhibit 12:00pm - 1:00pm Session 3 1:00pm - 2:00pm DRY: Transition from TSW to Adult Teacher Andrew Wooltorton (NSW) Teaching adults to swim can be as rewarding and fulfilling as teaching children their first milestones. Factors such as population growth and an aging population could lead to an increase in the demand for adult lessons. So if you are called on to make that transition to an adult teacher, this session will provide you with several ideas, developed from personal experience, to make a smooth transition to teaching adults. AD DRY: A Forum Considering the Need for a Single Holistic Framework for Aquatic Education AUSTSWIM, RLSSA and SLSA Representatives Is our current model of aquatic education adequately empowering individuals with the skills to safely participate in a lifetime of recreational aquatic activities? In the majority of drowning cases where adults are drowning at open water locations it is years after formal learn to swim lessons in a pool have ceased, with little or no formal skill development in open water, and while participating in a recreational activity. This forum will allow discussion to assist in developing alternative strategies to address community expectation and perception of learn to swim activities. GEN DRY: Teaching Children with Intellectual Disabilities Rebecca Hanrahan (DET NSW) This session will provide teachers with an overview of the different types and classifications associated with intellectual disabilities. Join Rebecca as she provides teachers with strategies to include students with intellectual disabilities, ideas on how to motivate and techniques for overcoming barriers. PWD WET: Skull and Kick Marcelle Renforth - Frederick (QLD) Sculling and Kicking are an integral part of swimming. Sculling is arguably one of the most underused swimming drills to increase good feel of the water and improve the initial catch and thrust of all strokes. We will explore the why, how and when of sculling in swimming. Powerful kick during your swimming is a must. Get a few ideas on how to spice up your swimming workout with effective kicking drills. Let s look at a ways to introduce these skills in a fun and stimulating manner. TSW/ TCS Session Changeover 2:00pm - 2:15pm Session 4 DRY: Building a Positive and Effective Relationship with Parents Tanya Boys (NSW) 2:15pm - 3:15pm How do we as teachers, coordinators and managers build positive and effective relationships with parents? This session will discuss a variety of topics including how to educate parents about swimming and water safety programs, ensuring parents understand what you re teaching and why; educating parents about water safety and how they can help their children develop their skills. In addition the importance of ensuring teachers and staff present professionally representing the values of your swim school and provide excellent service will be covered. SS/GEN DRY: Baby Swimming The Smart Start Julia Ham (QLD) We are all aware of the benefits of infant and preschool aquatic education. However there is so much more to infant learn to swim than water awareness, safety and teaching the fundamental beginnings of learning to swim. Drawing from child development research and through devising TumbleTastics (a unique land based program for children from birth to 8 years), this session looks at the physical, social, cognitive and emotional aspects of specific baby swimming activities and their long term benefits in relation to a child s school readiness and potential life skills. INF DRY: Collaborative Approach to Implementing Swimming and Water Safety Programs to Newly Arrived Australians Kirsten Kruse (VIC) VICSWIM Cultural is a Learn to Swim and Water Safety program that has touched the lives of many newly arrived individuals and their communities in Victoria. The program, delivered by AUSTSWIM teachers, is rapidly gaining momentum due to its sustainability achieved by the collaborative work of Aquatics and Recreation Victoria (ARV), aquatic facilities, Local Government and multicultural service organisations. Hear about the challenges, the successes and ways you can engage with new communities to build capacity, open doors and make dreams come true. CALD WET: Learn to Swim Butterfly Ben Luscombe (QLD) Butterfly has long been feared or ignored in the Learn to Swim arena. For some teachers it s because they can t do it and for others is because they do not understand completely how to teach it. In this presentation you will learn the biomechanics of the stroke and most importantly how to teach the stroke in a learn to swim environment. We are going to FLY into it. TSW/TCS Afternoon Tea and View the Trade Exhibit 3:15pm - 3:45pm Industry Forum and Closing Address Don t miss this last chance opportunity to be able to ask questions from some of our speakers from over the weekend. 3:45pm - 4:30pm Session Area Key SS Swim School INF Infant TSW Teacher of Swimming and Water Safety GEN General PWD People with a Disability AD Adult INT International TCS Towards Competitive Strokes WS Water Safety
