LIFTLINE A PUBLICATION OF THE OC SKI CLUB President s Corner Matt Fabrizio, President Busy Skiing & Working! I hope to see everyone at the meetings in March for Board Member and Officer nominations. And don t forget about the OC Ski Club election on April 12 th. MARCH 2018 WWW.FACEBOOK.COM/OCSKICLUB TWITTER.COM/OCSKICLUB WWW.OCSKICLUB.ORG Beaver Creek, Colorado January 13-20, 2018 ADMINISTRATION Cathy Marvin, Vice President for Administration Can t believe I am writing a March article where did winter go? We ve got important things happening this month. We will be putting out Constitutional Changes that Membership will vote on during Election Night, April 12. Look for the web blast about those changes between March 2-11. Happy Hour is on Wednesday March 21 at Hana Japanese Restaurant, 1620 Western Ave. Nominations will be taken for Board Members and Officers on March 22 and 29. Robin Raco is our Election Chair and will be around to answer any questions you have; or ask any Officer or Board Member. We also need volunteers to help on Election Night. See Robin or myself to volunteer. BRING YOUR MEMBERSHIP CARD TO ELECTION NIGHT! Nominations for Board Members & Officers: Put it on your calendar to show up on April 12 we need a quorum for Election Night and voting on Constitutional Changes. Save the date Wednesday, April 25 for a Year End Happy Hour (replacing the formal Installation Banquet). Wait until you see the price Tina negotiated there will be a maximum of 50 people; so sign up early. March 22 ND and 2018 I want to thank all of my Committee Chairs they perform week in and week out. Web blasts get sent out timely, the LiftLine has been uploaded by the first of every month since I became VP, Fundraising has new items and the Membership/Applicant Committee has kept up with all the work. Believe it or not, Volleyball registration will open soon. Both Tara and Robin have agreed to return to running our leagues. Hope many of you got to take advantage of our trips I just finished Sunday River and it was great and now I m France bound. I love this Club. OC SKI CLUB ELECTION NIGHT: March 29 TH 2018 APRIL 12 TH 2018

ORGANIZED SKIING MATT QUACKENBUSH VICE PRESIDENT FOR ORGANIZED SKIING AS THE SKI CARVES February in full swing as I write this. I just returned from an outstanding trip to Sunday River with 151 other OC friends, that coming just after another outstanding trip to New Hampshire with 40 of my favorite people. I recommend both of these trips for anyone who has not been lucky enough to experience them. OC SECRETARY SYLIA HAEFELI OC Board Meeting February 1 st 2018 February 1 Board meeting started at 6:35 pm with 13 members present and 2 absent who were on OC trips. Agenda, minutes and financial reports were accepted. Cathy Marvin, VP of Admin, reported that the Committee Fair was a great success. Thanks to all the volunteers and also I hope you won one of the great prizes given away. Fun evening with great friends. The Fair came in under budget. Nice going! Robin Raco is the election chairperson. She has scheduled nominations for March 22 and 29. If you are interested in running for any office or Board of Director, please see Robin about how to be nominated and also posting a bio. Elections will be April 12. WE NEED MORE VOLUNTEERS TO RUN THIS GREAT CLUB. Get involved and run for office. Tina Sorel, Activities & Entertainment Chair, is planning the installation ceremony. Any suggestions and help will be appreciated. It usually takes place in May. Alpine Bus Committee, Trips Committee, and Snowsports Instruction all gave quick reviews of their status. They are doing quite well. If you have questions, see the committee chairs. In addition to elections, there will be several Constitutional amendments up for a vote. A complete list will be available on the website. Take the time to read them over. Many of the changes are housekeeping items that have resulted from changes in Thanks to Gail Marotti-Hossan, Michelle Price (Sunday River) and Bob Hossan (New Hampshire) who each did a fantastic job as Trip Leaders. Many trips still to come with Openings on Stowe and Jay Peak. Stop by the meeting and check with Mike Koutelis and Matt Wakefield for availability. Buses are running and lots of day trips remain. I personally plan to be skiing well into April (May and June?). Stop by the Bus committee and see Sylvia Haeffli and Lynda Heany and sign up or sign up on line using PayPal. Get on the Bus! Barbara Sorrel is doing a great job with the Cross Country contingent. Say hello to Barb at the next meeting OC policy over the past few years. A few are new changes. Here is a brief summary of these proposed changes so far: All officers including President must be OC members in good standing. Applicants can be 18 years and up. Start having weekly meetings from September to April Extend the grace period for paying dues from August to December Change 2 committee titles: House to Facility Management and Public Relations to Marketing Amend both the Constitution and the By-Laws to change the title applicant to new member throughout both documents. Allow new members to complete the tasks for full membership over two years. They must pay dues for each year. Delete the membership category of Volleyball Only. The March 1 Board meeting may produce more constitutional changes and those plus the ones above will be fully described on the website immediately after the meeting. All of these changes are recommended by the Board to the membership for passage. The Board decided to participate in the Spring Adirondack Sports Summer Expo March 17-18 in Saratoga. We will have a booth and volunteers are needed to run it. Please see Frank Coleman if you are interested. This is a continuation of the OC goal to expand membership in our club. Board adjourned at 8 pm. Long meeting. Please continue those Snow Dances, the Ski/Board season is winding down! I am loving the snow, pray for lots of March snow. Respectfully submitted by Sylvia Haefeli, Secretary and find out what is coming and where the X-country busses are going. One of the best deals we have in this club is the free lessons offered by our great staff of ski instructors led by my good friend Jeff Kenton. I just got a note from Jeff about the latest private lesson day which is always a great success. Stop by at all our committee tables and thank the volunteers, they are working diligently to keep our club running and they are doing a great job.

All Buses are: PrePay to reserve a seat. LET IT SNOW - Jeff Kenton Memorial for Jerry Andritz About 30 OC skiers rode up the lifts to White Heat to pay their respects to Jerry Andritz. ALPINE BUS COMMITTEE Is March really here? The ski areas still have snow on the trails so come join us. The buses are still rolling and we are still partying in OC style. Many of the Ski Mountains are having a tough season due to lack of snow and warm temps. The mountains are eager for our business this year. Let s get out there and ski until the last bit of snow melts (hopefully in April.) Remember all Sunday buses are family (age 7-17) friendly. Guests (age 18+) are always welcome on any bus any day. We love it when your guests sign up as new members. They can do this on any bus they ride and we will refund the $10 extra they paid for their seat that day if they paid the $22 as a guest. The Sugarbush bus is scheduled for March 7. You can use your Warren Miller lift ticket coupon. Remember that you have to bring the same ID used to claim your lift ticket coupon on line. Bring a printed copy of the coupon. Sugarbush requires a printed copy and they won t print out a copy from your phone. If we find a pizza parlor, we will order pizza for the ride home. We will be OUT OF CONTROL ACTIVITIES AND ENTERTAINMENT Tina Sorell - activities / entertainment Chair march 2018 SYLIA HAEFELI, LYNDA HEANEY, & Donna Futia collecting that money on the bus ride in the morning. Remember that bus leaves Crossgates at 6 am due to the long ride. A reminder that March 9 at Gore is a Discount Club member Day (formerly called Ski Council Day). If you choose not to ride the bus, you can go straight to a ticket window, show your OC membership card and get the discounted price of $42 per person. One discounted ticket per membership card. A good reason to buy that Junior OC ID card for your kids, only $5 at the membership table. Check out our website for a link to the Ski Council site to see all the discount ticket days still left this season. There were over 250 days and daily discounts at Maple Ridge, West Mt. and Catamount. So check them out. Lots of reasons to ski/ ride cheap this year. Friday, March 16 St. Patrick s Day will be celebrated at Mt Snow. A lift ticket is $17 if you buy it on the website. However, if you ride the bus, you will get that price without pre-paying on line. This is always a huge party day at the mountain. We expect to send 2 buses so sign up early for this fun day on the slopes. Wear the Green and celebrate! The last private lesson day will be March 18 at Bromley. See Snowsports Instruction to sign up for a lesson with your favorite teacher. These lessons go quick, so sign up now for that March lesson. When we go out West on a trip, we often get the comment that so many of our skiers are really good. That s because the FREE lesson program has really elevated our Club s skiing skills. That goes for boarders as well. Take that lesson, don t be shy. It will really pay off in your skill advancement. The Mt Snow Reggae Fest bus is scheduled for March 24, our next party bus. Bring a chair, a cooler and a relaxed attitude. The sun and music will make for a super day with friends. Of course you can still ski/ ride the day away on some of the best groomed slopes of Vermont. Sometimes due to miscommunication, we find someone who hasn t paid for their bus ride or we owe someone a refund voucher for a bus ride they cancelled more than 48 hours before the bus date. Come see us at a meeting if you need to pay for a seat or need a refund voucher. We do have the necessary paperwork with us at meetings. It makes everything so much easier. See you on the bus! Sylvia, Lynda & Donna Mark Your Calendars! SAVE THE DATE! Happy Hour Hana Japanese Restaurant Wednesday, March 21 1620 Western Ave. (across from Crossgates Mall) 1/2 price draft beer and appetizers from 4:30-6:30 WEDNESDAY, APRIL 25 TH FOR A YEAR END HAPPY HOUR (REPLACING THE FORMAL INSTALLATION BANQUET) DETAILS COMING SOON!!!

OC FAMILY CORNER MATT WAKEFIELD FAMILY COMMITTEE CHAIR OC Family has been busy thus far in 2018 with more to come. First off, the family trip to Smugglers Notch, VT over MLK weekend was a huge success with 102 OC ers & guest in attendance, with a renewal of our Saturday night Italian feast, all who attended seemed to have a great time. Those that hit the new Fun Zone and played Laser tag had even more stories to tell. Club Racing, OC Family members did well at the first 2018 NYSCDSC races held at Oak Mtn. in January, with Madisyn & Allison Wakefield placing First & Third respectfully in the Junior Class. Maple Ski Ridge skiers have enjoyed our OC special rate of $10 lift tickets from 3-8 PM Wednesday Friday. In January we announced the return of the Family Jay Peak Ski, Stay, & Splash trip which will be on April 6-8 at the end of Easter break. Those interested need to sign up ASAP as rooms are going fast and will be turned back in about the time this newsletter is being read! There are many more OC Family events and ski dates planned for the balance of the season so check out the Club web site, attend meetings and get on my Family email list to receive special notices and family updates. Please remember that should there be a need for a leader on a Sunday Family bus, step forward as an OC Family member and offer to assist in managing the bus for the day. Your participation in events is noticed by all within the club and your assistance in any fashion goes a long way in keeping up the positive image of OC Family. Enjoy the month, get out and ski, & I hope to see you on the slopes. CROSS COUNTRY TRAILS Barbara Sorrell Cross Country Chair If you don t like the weather, wait a few minutes. This seems to be particularly true this winter. Just like snow, rain, sleet and ice are all forms of water. However, it doesn t take a science class to conclude that we don t get the same feedback from skis when sloshing through water, or precariously sliding on ice as we do when gliding along snow, an aggregate of many ice crystals. Here s a photo from a late January OC XC adventure at Osceola Tug Hill XC Ski Center. The Tug Hill is well known for amazing amounts of annual snowfall; however, on this trip, you really had to be a believer that snow would be found around the next bend in the road, as the bus chugged along past brown, barren fields for miles and miles. It was delightful day with a 10-14 snow base. The OC XC Bus Leader Blues When wicked wacky winter weekend weather woes await How many warming weekend weather woes Will the wacky winter weather take Until the XC winter weather weekend warriors wind up in a lake...
