That s what SWABC is all about The Best Fishing Club in NJ The regular meetings will be held on the third Tuesday of the month, at 8:00P.M. The only meeting that is not held at the Legion Hall on Tuesday will be the night of the Past President Dinner. That month is March. A $5 fee is required, for non-members, this entitles them to the 50/50 drawing, refreshments, snacks, and some new tricks about fishing. Welcome all; we hope you enjoy the evening.

President s Corner Our fishing season is about to kick into high gear, and our club has a lot of fishing trips ready for it! We have fluke and striper trips lined up, a fluke contest for just our members and a fluke tournament involving three ports! And even more trips are planned for the season! Please check the club trips listed in our newsletter and call up the trip captains to get on these trips. If a trip is listed as full and you would like to go on it, contact the trip captain to list you as an alternate in the event that someone has to drop out of it for some reason. You can also bring your friends as guests! We just want to have our members and their friends have a good time since that is what our club is all about. Welcome Aboard Five new members joined our club at our April meeting and we are glad to have them. They are: Jay Lustberg Hasbrouck Heights Len & Jane Smith Park Ridge Doug Woudenberg- Hawthorne Vincent Parodi - Montvale Welcome and jump on some of our fishing trips to have fun and meet our members! May 21 st Meeting Education at 7:30 p.m. Tom Blecker from Penn Tackle Before the start of our 8:00 p.m. meeting with Tom Blecker, member John Piazza will do a knot tying educational segment for fluke. Leader material and hooks will be available to do a hands on way for members to learn how to tie knots and rigs that can be used for fluke and other species. Mr. Blecker is the Manager in charge of repairing all of the Penn reels produced by that company. Many of us have Penn reels and it does not matter if you don t since Tom s presentation will cover what you need to know to keep your reels in tip top shape. He will also talk about the latest line of reels that Penn has to offer. He is a professional in what he does and you will find him to be very interesting and come away with a few tips to keep your tackle in good shape for the 2013 fishing season that is upon us. Tom has been to our club before and he really enjoys talking to our members. He may also give us an opportunity to have our reels repaired at discounted prices. Don t miss this one! April 16 th Meeting Recap Our speaker for this meeting was Captain John Kolias from Reel Fun Fishing sailing from the Highlands. Captain John s specialty is bucktailing for fluke, a technique that is gaining in popularity since it does produce results. Captain John s presentation covered so many aspects of buck-tailing and more of our members may try it instead of dragging bait. We have trips planned for Captain Kolias and we add more of them. Please call Jim Zimmer at (201) 666-5423 if you are interested. Canyon Reels Our club has struck up a good deal to get those good Canyon reels at discounted prices. They cost only $150 and they normally sell around $180 or more. The reels will be on display at our club meeting and they are not refurbished or used, but brand new! Please bring your checkbook to our May meeting or cash to get a great deal! When we know how many of these reels our members want, we will order them and have them ready for pick up in a short time. This is another advantage to being a member of our club! June 18 th Meeting Speaker Mr. Fred Waltzinger Mr. Waltzinger has been fishing probably since the day he started walking! He is in his 80 s and he has won many trophies for catching big fluke in his Manasquan fishing club. We all can learn from our elders in very many ways, but we all want to know how he manages to continually catch those big fluke! What are his secrets? Well, Mr. Waltzinger will share his secrets with us at our June meeting. Those little things mean a lot in catching the big ones and he will be a mentor to all of us in bringing in those big ones! Fred also uses Gulp bait and he will include Gulp in his presentation. He also ties his own rigs for fluke and they will be on sale. SWABC Fund Raising Raffle To support the many programs of our club and to pay for the cost of insurance, speaker fees, and our hall rent, we are holding a raffle for some very nice fishing gear and these prizes are: 1. 6 Hour fishing trip on the Fins & Feathers $600 Value 2. 32 LCD HDTV $300 Value 3. Rochelle Park Fishing Day - June 1 st Our club has been involved with helping young kids in Rochelle Park with having a good day of fishing at their local pond. Also, our club meets at the American Legion Post # 170 in Rochelle Park so it is always helpful to give back to the local community by helping local kids enjoy fishing. I will be meeting with Rochelle Park officials in early May to plan this outing and I envision our club members helping these kids by showing them how to fish, measure fish they catch and our possibly giving out some prizes for the fish that they catch. It is always so much fun just to watch young kids catch fish! At our May 21 st meeting, I will have more information to share with you on this outing so that you can help introduce these children to the fun we have with catching fish! Disadvantaged Youth Trip June 10 th on the MiJo Like we have done for many years, we will be taking disadvantaged kids on a charter trip on the MiJo starting at 8:00 a.m. and leaving from Atlantic Highlands. The kids always enjoy this trip and our members help the kids by showing them how to catch fish and also hook the fish to let the kids bring them up. It is a day full of fun and the kids get so excited about catching fluke and even when they bring up a skate! Please bring your own lunch and remember that there is NO alcohol to be brought on board. These kids have enough issues and we do not want to seen as role models with drinks in our hands. If you are interested in going on this trip, see Tom Tyls at our May meeting or call him at (201) 796-8522. Possible Good News for Fluke and Sea Bass Regulations By John Toth Fluke - On 4/17/13, the Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Commission (ASMFC) approved Option 2 of a Draft Addendum XXIV to the Summer Flounder, Scup and Black Sea Bass Management Plan. The Jersey Coast Anglers Association (our club is a member) and the Berkely Striper Club spoke in favor of this plan, while another group from Virginia spoke against it (everybody is trying to get a better piece of the fishing quota allotted to each state). This option allows the projected underage of fluke caught on the East coast to be utilized by New York and New Jersey as these were the only two states that had been forced to further restrict their recreational fluke regulations this year. Consequently, New York will be allowed to reduce its size limit from 19 ½ inches to 19 inches. New Jersey may be allowed to extend its fluke season by 11 days. Our season for fluke is currently scheduled to start on May 18 th and close on September 16 th, but our New Jersey Marine Fisheries Council (NJMFC) could vote to extend it to September 27 th. The fish that both states have been allocated more fish are considered bonus fish that will be added to each states quota for 2013. (The 2013 fluke season also has a bag limit of 5 fish at 17 ½ inches. This is not a slam dunk or sure thing since the NJMFC held an advisor s meeting and some advisors are against it since it may push New Jersey to exceed its 2013 fluke quota that will result in quota reductions for 2014 because of overfishing. The Council members may vote on their July meeting to keep the fluke regulations as they now stand, extend it for a few days or go for the full 11-day extension. Sea Bass - The ASMFC also reviewed and approved new data that will allow New Jersey to reduce its recreational sea bass quota by 24% rather than the 32% that had been previously mandated to compensate for overfishing of this species. Since we are taking a less of a hit on reductions to our quota, this will allow us to keep our 12 ½ size limit (13 inches was first considered with the 32% reduction) and a bag limit of 20 fish, down from the 25 former bag limit. The seasons are expected to run from

Possible Good News for Fluke and Sea Bass Regulations By John Toth May 19 th to August 8 th - September 27 th to October 14 th - November 11 th to December 31 st The sea bass regulations are to be set at the NJ Marine Fisheries Council on May 2 nd and the fluke regulations again by the same Council on July 11 th. There may be some changes to these proposals since fishing management decisions (or mismanagement as some of us prefer) often have different outcomes. I will continue to keep you posted on these fishery issues. For the 2013 regulations for other species, please see our website www.swabc.org. Fishing Trips and Events Our club has a lot of fishing trips scheduled and more are expected to be added. In addition to all of these trips, we are trying to organize a new contest for fluke for only club members to participate in with special prizes for catching big fluke. Our 2013 fishing season is starting and below is the species and minimum weights for members to enter our club s Big Fish Contest. Whoever catches the biggest fish in one of these categories wins bragging rights for the biggest fish caught. Fish can be entered throughout the year and even for the same specie. For example, if you caught a blue fish in May, but bigger one in October, you could re-enter the bigger one caught in October to replace your smaller blue. See Tom Tyls at our meetings to receive affidavits to participate in this contest. Affidavits for this contest can be also found on our website www.swabc.org. Good fishing and good luck!

Support our Sponsors On the back of our newsletters, we show sponsors who support our club and when you patronize them, please say that you are a member of our club. For example, Meltzers and the Ramsey Outdoors fishing stores sell tackle to us for our Dark Horse prizes at a discount and they even donated prizes for our Past President s Dinner. It is good for them and for our club to tell them when you buy gear that you are a member since they will know that we are supporting them. Always have your membership card available to possibly get a discount on your purchases. Our sponsors also include other businesses and boat captains, so please patronize these businesses who are sponsors our club.
