UC DAVIS WOMEN S VOLLEYBALL WEEKLY RELEASE Weekly Release #5 23 September 2014 For Immediate Release Contact: Mark Honbo (530/752-8050 mwhonbo@ucdavis.edu THIS WEEK Friday, Sept. 26 - HAWAI I, 7 p.m. LAST WEEK at Hampton Inn & Suites Northern Colorado Classic Friday, Sept. 19 - vs. Wyoming (L, 1-3) Saturday, Sept. 20 - at Northern Colorado (L, 2-3) Saturday, Sept. 20 - vs. Hampton (W, 3-1) NOTES NORTHERN COLORADO CLASSIC: Senior Valerie Brain was the lone Aggie on the all-tournament team, totaling 21 kills with a.321 average and 12 blocks... Seven of those stuffs came in the win over Hampton (see below) while she enjoyed 8-1-12 (.583) hitting against Wyoming to open the weekend... Junior Holland Seymour posted career highs in kills (13), attempts (26) and digs (7) in the five-set marathon with the host Bears... She hit 9-for-11 in the fourth set to force a fifth frame... Redshirt freshman Aima Eichie hit 6-0-10 (.600) against UNC, matching exactly her hitting chart at Sacramento State four days earlier... Sophomore Kendall Walbrecht also tallied career highs in kills (11) and total swings (32) in the battle with the hosts. NET EFFECT: Senior Katie Quinn had a career-best 12 blocks to help UC Davis amass 18.0 total in the win over Hampton... Both are program highs since collegiate volleyball went to a 25-point, rally-scoring format, which provides the fewest opportunities to collect blocking stats (side-out scoring had infinitely many, the 30-point era had approximately 20 percent more chances)... Five other Aggies have recorded 12 or more blocks in a match: Kelly Spaulding had a school-record 16 at Cal Poly Pomona (Sept. 19, 1998), while Kate DeVore (2001), Kaersten Hill (1998), Candy Lench (1992) and Sheri Ladrech (1990)... The Aggies last totaled 18 blocks against Middle Tennessee State in early 2012; however, the last time they had 18 in a match shorter than five sets was Nov. 3, 2000... Led by DeVore and Allison Gillespie, that UC Davis team had 18.0 stuffs in a sweep of Sonoma State. STAT RANKINGS: Squyres ranks third in the Big West Conference in both total kills (181) and kills per set (3.69)... Senior L Megan Lancaster ranks fourth in digs per set (4.20) although her total (206) sits second in the league... Quinn s huge weekend at the net moved her up to third in blocks (1.20 bps)... The Aggies 52 team blocks in the last four matches have also bumped them into third in the Big West team rankings. 2014 SCHEDULE Aug. 29 at Rice (Rice Invitational) L, 0-3 Aug. 30 vs. Fresno State (Rice Invitational) L, 2-3 vs. Louisiana-Lafayette (Rice Invitational) L, 1-3 Sept. 3 at Saint Mary s L,1-3 Sept. 6 SAN JOSE STATE W, 3-0 Sept. 7 PORTLAND W, 3-0 Sept. 12 at Washington (Washington/Seattle Tournament) L, 0-3 Sept. 13 vs. UNLV (Washington/Seattle Tournament) L, 0-3 at Seattle (Washington/Seattle Tournament) W, 3-0 Sept. 16 at Sacramento State W, 3-2 Sept. 19 vs. Wyoming (Northern Colorado Classic) L, 1-3 Sept. 20 at Northern Colorado (Northern Colorado Classic) L, 2-3 vs. Hampton (Northern Colorado Classic) W, 3-1 Sept. 26 HAWAI I* 7 p.m. Oct. 3 at Cal Poly* 7 p.m. Oct. 4 at UC Santa Barbara* 5 p.m. Oct. 11 UC RIVERSIDE* 7 p.m. Oct. 17 at Cal State Fullerton* 7 p.m. Oct. 18 at UC Irvine* 7 p.m. Oct. 24 at CSUN* 7 p.m. Oct. 25 at Long Beach State* 7 p.m. Oct. 31 UC SANTA BARBARA* 7 p.m. Nov. 1 CAL POLY* 7 p.m. Nov. 8 at UC Riverside* 7 p.m. Nov. 13 CAL STATE FULLERTON* 7 p.m. Nov. 15 UC IRVINE* 2 p.m. Nov. 20 LONG BEACH STATE* 7 p.m. Nov. 22 CSUN* 7 p.m. Nov. 29 at Hawai i* 9 p.m. * - Big West Conference match All times Pacific HOME MATCHES IN BOLD CAPS BIG WEST CONFERENCE STANDINGS Through Sept. 20 BIG WEST OVERALL W-L Pct. WEEKLY NOTES, CONT. UP NEXT: With the preseason tournaments completed, UC Davis heads into the Big West Conference portion of the schedule, beginning with a home match with No. 25 Hawai i... The last time the Rainbow Wahine visited the Pavilion was October 26, 2013, when Aggies enjoyed their biggest upset in program history with a five-set win. LISTEN: David DK Kim will call the game on streaming audio at www.ucdavisaggies.com... Listeners may connect directly at http:// portal.stretchinternet.com/ucd/portal.htm?eventid=172704& streamtype=audio... The UC Davis-Hawai i match is also one of the few to reach the terrestrial airwaves each year: new play-by-play announcer Tiff Wells will deliver the action on ESPN 1420 Honolulu (KKEA-AM). HAWAI I (8-3) moved back into the AVCA Top 25 after handing Northern Arizona its first two losses of the season over the weekend... The Rainbow Wahine, the defending Big West champions and 2014 preseason favorites, had been nationally ranked every week since the final 1992 poll... Junior OH Tai Manu-Olevao posted a double-double of 13 kills and 16 digs to go with a.414 hitting average in Saturday s sweep, while sophomore OH Nikki Taylor and junior MB Olivia Magill each had 11 kills in Friday s 3-0 win... Magill leads the Big West with a.407 hitting average (123-22-248) while her 1.59 blocks per set stands well ahead of Long Beach State s Brie Mackie (1.27) and UC Davis Quinn (1.20)... As a team, Hawai i paces the league in both aces (1.82) and blocks (3.08). HEAD COACH DAN CONNERS: On the Northern Colorado tournament: It was tough losing to Northern Colorado in five after coming back in the fourth. Holland Seymour was definitely a high. She played great in that match. The low point of that match is that we didn t execute in the way we re capable of executing. So that will be a theme in the first part of conference. Our practices will be all about how well we re executing. We ve taken huge leaps forward in terms of understanding the system and execution since the start of the season. We re getting there. By no means are we there yet, but for sure we are on our way. The players are starting to understand what we want to do and how we want to do it. As that transfers to matches, the execution will go up. Right now, it s starting to transfer. I think against Sac State we saw times where we played at a higher level. It s a work in progress but it s getting there. On this weekend s Big West opener: Hawai i will be ready to play and they will not take us lightly after what happened last year. So we ll have to be ready to go. Our team is up for it. Hawai i is a good team, they re well-coached and they have a lot of talent. We ll have to battle. But we have talent, too. So I m looking forward to a good, tough, long match. Katie Quinn s 12 blocks and the team s 18.0 blocks vs. Hampton (Sept. 20) are Aggie benchmarks for the 25-point, rally-scoring era of collegiate volleyball. Megan Lancaster s 30 digs at Sacramento State is the most by any Aggie since Avreeta Singh posted 36 (in four sets) vs. Cal Poly back on Oct. 27, 2007. This is the first season under the new coaching staff of Dan Conners, Vicki Brown and Mike Terrill. Conners took over the helm in June, then brought in Brown and Terrill as assistants in July. All three coaches have ties to the Big Ten: Conners was an assistant at Illinois, Brown played for the Illini, Terrill assisted at Ohio State.

COACHING STAFF DAN CONNERS Head Coach 1st Year UCLA 01 Dan Conners, previously the top assistant at the University of Illinois, was announced as the head women s volleyball coach at UC Davis in June of 2014. His appointment marks a return to the Golden State for the Apple Valley native, who also spent three years as an assistant coach with the Cal State Northridge men s volleyball team from 2003-06. Conners has served on the staffs at three elite women s programs during the past eight seasons: Illinois, Nebraska and UCLA. In 2013, his second season with the Illini, he helped the program to an 18-15 season and a berth in the NCAA tournament. Illinois posted 10 victories against AVCA Top 25 programs that year. He also gained experience with the Northridge men s team where he worked in all aspects of the Matadors program. Before arriving in Champaign, Conners enjoyed a one-year stint as a recruiting coordinator and defensive coordinator for former AVCA Coach of the Year John Cook at Nebraska. His team led the Big Ten in opponent hitting percentage, capturing the conference title in its first season as a member. Conners previously served five seasons under head coaches Andy Banachowski and Mike Sealy at his alma mater from 2006-10. During that time, the Bruins posted a combined 124-44 record and made two trips to the Elite Eight tournament. Conners recruiting at UCLA resulted in a national title in 2011. The Bruins led the Pac-10 Conference in blocks three times and held opponents to a.187 clip or lower every year. As a collegian, Conners was a member of the Bruins 2001 team that finished as national runner-up. He totaled 125 assists as a reserve setter that year, shortly before graduating with a degree in political science. He was with the UCLA program when it won NCAA titles in 1998 and 2000 while finishing second in 2001. With his appointment, Conners became the 10th head coach in program history. He and his wife, Becky, have three sons: Mason, Wyatt and Oliver.
