CI NCI NNATI REDS ( 14-22) vs. PHI LADELPHI A PHI LLI ES (22-15) Sunday, May 15, 2016 Citizens Bank Park 1:35 p.m. EDT Game 38; Home 16 RHP Dan Straily (1-1, 3.47) vs. LHP Adam Morgan (1-0, 3.94) YESTERDAY S ACTI ON: The Phillies defeated the Cincinnati Reds in dramatic fashion, 4-3, at Citizens Bank Park Starter Aaron Nola continued to pitch well as he went 7.0 innings and allowed only 1 ER with 9 strikeouts to just 1 walk The game was delayed at the start for 38 minutes due to rain before first pitch at 7:43 Philadelphia took a 2-run lead into the top of the 9 th inning and with Jeanmar Gomez unavailable, David Hernandez was summoned to close Hernandez, looking for his first save since 2013, worked around a bit of trouble before Tyler Goedeel made a terrific throw to gun down Eugenio Suarez, who was attempting to score on a fly ball to left Cameron Rupp held onto the ball amid a huge collision at the plate to secure the series win for the Phillies. ELI AS SAYS: Leftfielder Tyler Goeddel preserved another one-run win for the Phillies by throwing out Eugenio Suarez at the plate to end the game last night It was the first time in almost exactly one year that the Phillies won a game by one run that ended with an outfielder throwing out a runner at home plate On May 13, 2015 the Phillies were clinging to a one-run lead when Jeff Francoeur threw out Pittsburgh's Steve Lombardozzi at the plate to end the game The win also gave Jonathan Papelbon his franchise record 113 th save. REMEMBER THE FI GHTI NS?: Since losing their first four games of the season, the Phillies have gone 22-11 (.667) in their 33 games since April 9, which is the second best record in the majors over that stretch Only the Chicago Cubs have a higher winning percentage (24-7,.774) during that period Since April 9 th, Phillies pitchers rank 2 nd in the NL in strikeouts (307) and opponents OBP (.285), 3 rd in WHIP (1.14) and BB/9.0 IP (2.66), 4 th in ERA (3.42), average against (.228), and T-4 th in runs allowed (121) They also rank 5 th in the NL in fielding percentage (.985) over that span. SWEEPS WEEK: A win today would secure the Phillies their third sweep in their first 12 series this season Last year, the Phillies third sweep came in their 32 nd series of the season, July 24-26 versus the Cubs at Wrigley Field Philadelphia hasn t swept three of their first 12 series of a season since 2011, when they collected three sweeps in their first 10 sets that year. RAGI NG BULL: Odubel Herrera has walked 27 times in 159 plate appearances this season (17.0 % BB rate) and is just one walk shy of his entire total from last season (28 BB, 495 PA, 5.2% BB rate) According to research via MLB Network, if the season ended today, Herrera s 11.8 % increase in walk rate would be the highest single season increase in the modern era (since 1900) Herrera has reached base safely 71 times this season which is T-2 nd for most in the majors with WSH s Bryce Harper (most: 76, HOU s Altuve). HI GHEST SI NGLE SEASON BB% I NCREASE I N THE MODERN ERA (since 1900) Odubel Herrera 11.8% 2015-16 Barry Bonds 10.7% 2003-04 Ted Williams 9.8% 1940-41 Richie Ashburn 9.1% 1953-54 Jimmy Wynn 8.7% 1968-69 Reggie Jackson 8.7% 1968-69 TI GHT CLUB: Last night, the Phillies played in their Major League-leading 17 th one-run game of the season, two more than any other club (2 nd : CIN & SEA, 14 each) They are 14-3 (.824) in those games, which is currently the highest winning percentage in the majors (2 nd : BAL, 5-2,.714) I n fact, only one team in Major League history has finished a season with a higher winning percentage in one-run games -- the Cleveland Blues went 16-3 (.842) in one-run games in 1883 (courtesy: Elias Sports Bureau) Including last night, nine of Philadelphia s last 10 victories have been by one run (since 4/29). CI TI ZENS BANK SPARK: The Phillies have won each of their last six games at Citizens Bank Park (since 4/20), which is their longest home winning streak since June 2-18, 2013 (also 6-0)...
