This is my first newsletter bulletin as Edinburgh Diving Club head coach. I would like to use this role to drive forward the development of the club and to aid organisation of competitions, events and communication. We will shortly be sending out invitation e-mails regarding the away competitions between now and Christmas and we would greatly appreciate if you could reply to these as soon as possible. Information about home competitions East Districts and Club Championships will be available soon on the website. This is the first year that the squads were training throughout the summer holidays and this was a great success and proved to be very beneficial. There has been a lot of improvement from those divers who continued to train. I d like to congratulate Aaron Daly and Lucas Thomson on their selection to the National Talent programme. They will attend their first training camp in October and we look forward to watching their progress. Finally if you have any questions you would like to put to me please feel free to contact me on marysless@hotmail.co.uk. Mary Sless, EDC head coach
National Age groups and Junior Elites C event Sheffield, 27th 30th May A team of 8 divers attended this competition down in Sheffield. The events were long with up to 34 divers in some. The EDC divers were competing as guests as it is the English nationals, however there were some really credible results. The top 10 finishes were as follows Mhairi Goodwin (C Elite) 6 th 1m 7th 3m, 7th Platform Lewis Thomas 5 th 1m 5 th 3m 9th platform Angus Menmuir 9 th 1m, 7th 3m Marianne Hume 8th platform Ogden Trophy and Lockerbie Shield, 13th May Well done to James Heatly and Charlotte Briggs who won the Ogden Trophy and the Lockerbie Shield. Congratulations also to Mhairi Goodwin, Amber Foster, Aaron Daly and Angus Menmuir who also achieved medals. This event is slightly different to most as the divers perform their required easier dives from the 1 metre, 3 metre and platforms. The divers, and especially the senior divers don t get to perform these dives often.
European Games, Baku, 5th-15th June James was part of the 11 strong junior dive team who were chosen to represent Team GB at the first ever European games in Azerbaijan. This was James last international outing in the Junior 16-18 age group so he was looking to make a good impression and he did just that! Starting out with Bronze medal in his first event, the 1 metre springboard, James continued to improve. He then went on to win a silver medal in the 3 metre synchro event with his partner Ross Haslam and finally completed his set of medals with a gold in the 3 metre springboard event. Well done James and also to his coach Jenny. We also welcome back Judy Wardlaw who is back in Edinburgh after a few months running the event. Great experience for everyone involved. Italian Grand Prix, Bolzano 2nd-5th July European Championships, 9th 14th June Grace and James both travelled to Italy to represent GB in the 3 metre springboard event at the Italian Grand prix. Both of them made their first ever individual final at a grand prix and finished 4th in their events Grace finished in 5th position in the 1 metre springboard final. This was one of the best ever results by a GB athlete in this event! Grace also showed she is up there with the top European divers by coming 11th in the 3 metre final. After qualifying in 2nd position for the final we re sure that there is medal potential in there one day!
