July 2017 Once again we are extremely proud to report on all the achievements of our children in sport. Sporting participation and achievement is exceptional and a key strength of KMS. This is due to the dedication of the children and the fantastic support and high quality coaching they receive from their teachers and coaches. Thank you to all pupils who have participated either as a team member or as a member of an after school sports club. A special thank you to all parents who have supported their children and to those who assisted with transport. Y7 Boys/Girls Athletics Injuries in the team meant that new team members had to merge into the squad, which they did admirably `stepping up to the mark and giving their very best efforts. The team supported and encouraged each other and their enthusiasm, commitment and outstanding sportsmanship paid off gaining them the Silver medal position behind Calderdale, beating King James who had won the Kirklees round. An excellent all round performance. Y7/8 Boccia The Boccia team, having won the Kirklees Championship, had to reorganise their team for this event. They did so successfully, ready for the strong competition they faced. They played calmly and tactically in the qualifying rounds and achieved the most points. Then they were told they were playing for the gold medal and a few nerves crept in and as a result our opponents, Bruntcliffe (Leeds) won the game. We are really proud of our silver medals and look forward to more Boccia in Year 8. Boccia Team take Gold and Silver We were very successful in the Kirklees Boccia Championship held at Newsome High School and Sports College. We fielded three teams in a group of 18 other schools from across Kirklees. There was some very skilful play and close games; the tactical awareness of the teams was impressive. In the final two of our teams faced each other and as one player said we are bound to win and of course we did, taking Gold and Silver medals. An excellent performance from all our players. Boys Football Competition The West Yorkshire School Games gave us the opportunity to test ourselves against some talented teams from Leeds, Bradford, Calderdale, Kirklees and Wakefield, and was a reward for an excellent year of football. Following a slow start, our first game saw us beaten 3-0 to a strong Crossflats team. However, from then on we went from strength to strength, beating Morley Victoria 1-0 in our next match, before rounding off the group stages with a comprehensive 6-0 victory against Sandal Castle. We met Greenside, the winners of Group A, in the semi-final and overcame them 1-0 in a tight game. The final was a rematch of our opening group game against Crossflats. After having the majority of the play we couldn t quite take our chances and conceded a slightly unfortunate goal. Despite this, we continued to create and were desperately unlucky when Bailey hit the post in what proved to be the last kick of the game. Congratulations to all the boys involved; they played some fantastic football and scored some great goals throughout the competition against some very good sides. A brilliant achievement, let s take this momentum into Year 7! Very well done to all of our West Yorkshire Teams. They were all silver medallists a huge achievement for one school.
Spenborough Athletics Kirklees Our Y7 and Y8 boys and girls athletics teams competed at the Kirklees Schools Athletics Championships. The meetings were attended by 20 schools from Kirklees. All four teams put in some superb performances and many pupils achieved personal bests. Our boys teams finished in a solid 5 th position and our girls teams both secured 1 st position and are now Kirklees Champions. Excellent work! Neiley Races Each year we aim to improve our performances both as individuals and as a school at the Neiley Races and this year Y6 boys and girls did not disappoint. We had 19 competitors in our team and nearly everyone managed to complete all three races which was a fantastic effort, particularly as the ground was very wet, making the going difficult and the course had to be altered for two of the races. Megan Hughes ran consistently well in all three races taking a clear lead and winning convincingly to be Girls Individual Gold Medalist. The boys individual race was hard fought and it all depended on the result of the last race. Alfie King was in contention and his determination and high level performance won him the 3 rd race and the Boys Individual Gold. The Girls and Boys also performed so well, as teams they took the Girls Team Winners Trophy and the Boys Team Winners Trophy with Laurence Grose collecting an individual commendation in 6 th place. A fantastic result and a great team effort. Well done. U11 Danone Championship We began the term by qualifying as West Yorkshire Champions for this prestigious event in Sheffield attended by teams from across Northern England - Cumbria, Northumberland etc. Our team played solidly without a break throughout the whole event. It was a mammoth event moving from pitch to pitch, meeting new challenges and keeping up our efforts with quick drinks to maintain our stamina. We finished the competition in a very worthy Bronze medal position having beaten the two teams in 1 st and 2 nd place. We were one goal away from playing at a Premier League Ground but that s how it is at times in sport. Disappointing but an excellent effort by the whole team. You can be proud of yourselves. END OF YEAR SPORTS AWARDS... Young Leader keyrings were also presented to 34 Year 8 pupils in recognition of the work they have carried out throughout Y7 and Y8. Young Leaders in Y7 and Y8 were also presented with Bronze, Silver, Gold and Platinum Certificates for the hours they had achieved supporting others. Well done to all our young sports people. An excellent year of achievements.
West Yorkshire Summer Games Three of our school teams qualified to represent Kirklees at the West Yorkshire Games at Leeds Beckett University in July. Trampolining Laura Steers continues to excel in trampolining and recently took third place in the national competition. Very well done Laura, we look forward to watching your future progress. Energise Dance Congratulations to the Energise Dancers who performed a brilliant routine at The Jump and Shout Show at the Lawrence Batley Theatre on Wednesday 5 th July. They were a pleasure to watch and their orange jumpsuits certainly made them stand out on the big stage. Well done. Interhouse Kwik Cricket Well done to all Y6 Cricketers, both boys and girls, who have taken part in the Interhouse competitions at lunchtimes over the last few weeks. Lots of skill and teamwork have been seen throughout the competition and the final was very close. The final positions were 1 st Yellow, 2 nd Green, 3 rd Red and 4 th Blue. A special mention to Red house for having the largest number of team players and thank you to House Captains and Umpires for giving up their lunchtimes to help. English Schools Athletics The English Schools event at Thornes Park provides our athletes with the opportunity to experience the full facilities of an Athletics stadium as well as competing against schools from Leeds, Bradford, Wakefield, Calderdale and North Yorkshire. Both our boys and girls teams took part in all track and field events, including the hurdles. Strong, personal performances and solid team work took both teams through to the next round B final where the competition was stronger and from as far afield as Lincoln. A very good experience for all athletes and a great team effort. U11 Kwik Cricket - Girls The Y6 Girls Kwik Cricket team took part in the Kirklees competition at Armitage Bridge Cricket Club in early July. It was a well attended event with teams from across Kirklees competing. The girls played quality cricket from the start, easily beating Heckmondwike. They continued to work hard and finished joint 1 st in their section. Unfortunately, it had to be wickets that decided who went through to the next stage and we lost out to Wooldale. A valient effort girls. U11 Kwik Cricket - Boys It has been an extremely enjoyable and successful season for the KMS U11 Kwik Cricket team. The journey began at Honley CC. After a gruelling day of cricket which saw them play six matches, Kirkburton came out on top in a competition involving thirteen schools. The standard of cricket was high and the end was too close to call. After being tied on points with Moorlands and Scissett, KMS narrowly won on wickets taken, having taken the most throughout the day. This meant they progressed to the West Yorkshire stage of the competition, where they represented Kirklees at Hunslet CC. Naturally, there were some strong schools in attendance and some very talented cricketers on show. Although we didn t manage to progress out of the group stages, they showed excellent spirit and togetherness in and amongst some brilliant batting and bowling performances. It was a fantastic experience for the boys and one that will no doubt drive them on into Y7. Y8 Cricket Y8 boys were a strong team throughout the season this year but many of their opportunities to further improve their batting, bowling and fielding skills were hampered by poor weather. They completed their season as runners up after meeting a very strong Scissett Middle School side in the final. A great effort boys.
Y7 Cricket Plate Final Following a good run in the competition, the team made it through to the Plate Final where they met a strong Scissett Middle School side at Upperthong CC. After winning the toss, we put Scissett into bat and restricted them to 78-2 off 16 overs, thanks to some tight fielding and accurate bowling, in particular from Joe Sayer and Ben Tyas, who were well supported by Benji Paxman and Loui Richards. However, after a steady start with the bat from opener Joe Sayer, some questionable running between the wickets resulted in the loss of several wickets in quick succession, including 5 runouts, meaning the middle order provided little resistance to the excellent bowling on show. As a result, Kirkburton could only manage 59-8 in reply, falling just short of their target. Still, it was a fantastic achievement to make it to the final and a great occasion. Let s try to build on this for Y8 well done boys. Y6 Invitation TAG Rugby June and July saw the Y6 mixed tag rugby invitational competition in school. We had 6 teams enter a fiercely fought competition. Some early blowout scores as some new teams got used to the game and pace were soon evened out in the later rounds. A lot of fantastic tagging, quick feet and evasion, neat and skilful rugby and an amazing amount of effort went into every game. The Grand final between Tedder s Taggers and BBQ Chicken was a tight affair, edged by the eventual champions BBQ Chicken. In the Plate final, Josh s Unicorns beat Great 8+1 in another close game. Over 50 boys and girls took part, playing on 6 different days. A massive thanks too to the Y7 boys who helped organise and referee the matches, without you it would not have been possible. Kirklees TAG Rugby Tournament The Y6 mixed Tag Rugby team arrived at Leeds Road playing fields to compete to be Kirklees representatives in the West Yorkshire Youth Games. Unfortunately, it didn t quite pan out. There were four sections of the competition with almost 30 teams involved. We had 6 fixtures to qualify for the finals, losing the first three, then winning the last three comfortably. We went in in very confident mood, knowing that we had a good rugby team, good ball players and great athletes. However, as we played as much rugby and teamwork as we could, other teams used their go-to options; give it to the fastest, smallest, most evasive player on their team. Some were so small, they went under our would-be tacklers! Over 20 tries scored by our team in our 6 games and only 9 conceded! A great morning and spirit and we all really enjoyed ourselves and had a photograph with Earl Crabtree. The morning was made all the more interesting as the former Duchess of York, Fergie, arrived by helicopter! U11 Girls Football The Y6 girls took part in the Kirklees (South) round of the West Yorkshire Pathway competition at Newsome High School. The tournament was divided into four sections with 18 teams taking part. We played consistently driving forward whilst maintaining strength at the back. We saved goals and scored consistently, winning most of our games. When the points were tallied we went through as winners of our section to the semis. We played confidently and scored early and though the opposition defence played well, we won convincingly. We met St. Joseph s in the final. Both teams were evenly matched and the game saw good defence and attacking play from both sides. We played better as a team but their very strong player managed a shot which trickled in. We didn t give up and continued to play well but we couldn t score and had to settle for second place, just missing out on the chance to go to the West Yorkshire Final. A great effort from everyone football looks promising for next season, girls.
Y6 Boys Swimming It was an absolute pleasure (despite being ridiculously hot!) to visit Ponds Forge International Swimming pool to support our Y6 boys swimming team, competing in the English Schools Swimming Relay Primary Finals having already won the North East Divisional competition. Our boys: Oliver Winter, Rohan Fares, Ethan Pearson and Ben Croft swam against the best swimmers in the country and they did themselves and Kirkburton Middle proud. They competed in both the Medley Relay and in the Freestyle Relay, showing good stroke technique, excellent team work and great timing in the changeovers. Despite just missing out on qualifying into the finals, they finished in 19 th position across the whole of England. This was the highest ranking for a state school. What an excellent effort, well done and thank you to all four of the boys. Basketball, Hockey and Table Tennis Those pupils who have attended the above three afterschool clubs completed the season with fixtures against Scissett. The Basketball game was hard fought Kirkburton playing well against an experienced and talented Scissett side. We defended and drove forward well, setting up some good shots but were, on occasions, very unlucky shots spinning round and out of the net. Scissett s shooting was excellent and despite some good court play we found it difficult to deflect their shots. Though we never gave up and we did narrow their lead as the quarters progress, we couldn t beat them. Well done boys a brave attempt. We fielded a mixed boys hockey squad from all years and as Scissett were missing players, some of our squad played for them. The skill demonstrated throughout was very good from both sides in defence and attack and Kelly, our coach, was very pleased with the progress made. Scissett finally won the game but with some of our players on their team it was not totally their victory. In Table Tennis we played two Scissett teams and the matches were very close with some skilful play and great shots from both teams. Both experienced players and newcomers worked hard, trying to maintain form and concentration on the crucial points. At the end of the tournament, Kirkburton were the winners. Very well done. Isaac Nash Cross Country Competition The competition was an opportunity for everyone in school to give their very best efforts for their House and in memory of Isaac an excellent cross country runner, who loved the challenge of the race. There were six races in total: Y6 boys and girls, Y7 boys and girls and Y8 boys and girls. The results were as follows: Y6 Boys: Alfie King (1), Evan Calderwood (2), Laurence Grose (3) Y6 Girls: Megan Hughes (1), Jessica Carroll (2), Alis Jenkinson (3) Y7 Boys: Kristian Green (1), James Thornton (2), Ben Usher (3) Y7 Girls: Edie Barratt (1), Alyssa Valenti (2), Bella Sykes (3) Y8 Boys: Fin Empson (1), Anesh Tahir (2), James Bullock (3) Y8 Girls: Shen Wigfield-Turner (1), Martha Pitchford (2), Amber Allsopp (3) The Isaac Nash trophy for consistent excellence in cross country running was presented to Shen Wigfield-Turner and Fin Empson. Young Leaders and Young Ambassadors Our Young Leaders in Y7 and Y8 have had an extremely busy term supporting pupils in their own school and in the schools across the pyramid. Managing and organising whole school sports day has been a major activity this term and each event has presented its own challenges, adapting to suit weather conditions being a major one. Other activities have also included Healthy Happy Day, Mission Active Day, Reception Cross Country, Panability mornings as well as Tag Rugby, Tennis and Athletics. Young Leaders have continued to provide lunchtime activities for Y6 and during Y5 transition week they provided games for our Y5 guests. The Young Ambassadors have also been busy organising extra events at Kirkburton. Following on from their successful interhouse hockey event, they have organised Interhouse Kwik Cricket which was well attended and Thursday Panability Clubs, helping to give our West Yorkshire Boccia players some extra coaching. 172¼ hours of support have been given to pyramid schools this year plus support at lunchtimes, at Interhouse and other sporting events at KMS. An excellent year in Leadership from which not only the leaders but many, many pupils have benefited.
