Value City Arena, Columbus, Ohio TONIGHT SGAME The Friars open the 54th season of Friar hockey with an exhibition game against the St. Francis Xavier University (Antigonish, Nova Scotia, Canada) X-Men on Sunday, October 3 at 7:00 p.m. at PC s Schneider Arena. NEXT ON THE SCHEDULE... Providence begins the regular season on Friday, October 8 against the Clarkson Golden Knights at Schneider Arena at 7:00 p.m. FRIARS AGAINST CANADIAN TEAMS... The Friars are 22-17 all-time against Canadian teams, including a 1-1 mark against St. Francis Xavier. Last season, the Friars defeated St. Thomas University (Fredericton, New Brunswick), 5-1. PC had five different goal scorers, including Tony Zancanaro (Trenton, Michigan), who scored the game winner. David Cacciola (Burlington, Mass.) played the second period for the Friars and stopped all four shots that he faced. THE PROVIDENCE-ST. FRANCIS XAVIER SERIES... Tonight s game will mark the third all-time meeting between the two teams. The two teams first met in 1956 when the Friars posted were defeated, 4-1. Forty years later in 1996, PC earned a 4-1 victory at Schneider Arena. SCOUTING ST. FRANCIS XAVIER UNIVERSITY... St. Francis Xavier (Antigonish, Nova Scotia) is coming off its most successful season in school history in 2003-04. The X-Men posted a 19-6-3 overall record and capped their season with a 3-2 win in the Canadian Interuniversity Sport Final to capture the title for the first time in school history. The X-Men are led by senior Patrick Grandmaitre (Hull, Quebec City) who posted team highs in goals (15), assists (22) and points (37) during the 2003-04 season. In net, Michael Mole (Orleans, Ontario) played in 22 games last season and recorded a 16-3-2 record with a 2.49 goals against average and a.913 save percentage. SCOUTING PROVIDENCE COLLEGE... The Friars finished last season with a 16-14-7 overall record and a 7-11-6 mark in Hockey East action, which was good for fifth-place in the league. Chris Chaput (Pawtucket, R.I.), now a senior, led the Friars in scoring in 2003-04 with a career-high 34 points (12 goals, 22 assists). The Friars return back 17 veterans from last season s squad and welcome 10 newcomers. Among the veterans is senior goaltender David Cacciola (Burlington, Mass.) who played in 11 games and posted a.933 save percentage and a 2.06 goals against average.

Providence (26 points) was picked to finish eighth in the Hockey East preseason Coaches Poll, which was released on Thursday, September 30 at Hockey East Media Day in Boston, Mass. It marks the lowest preseason ranking for the Friars in school history. Defending Hockey East Champion, Boston College was picked to finish first as it received 68 points and five first-place votes. Maine, the 2004 Hockey East Tournament Champion, was chosen to finish second with 66 points and three firstplace votes, while Boston University (52 points and Hockey East Preseason Coaches Poll Team (1st-Place Votes) Points 1. Boston College (5) 68 2. Maine (3) 66 3. Boston University 52 4. New Hampshire 51 5. UMass Lowell 45 6. Massachusetts 42 7. Northeastern 28 8. Providence 26 9. Merrimack 18 one first-place vote) was tabbed to finish third. New Hampshire (51 points), UMass Lowell (45 points), UMass (42 points) and Northeastern (28 points) were picked to finish fourth, fifth, sixth and seventh, respectively. Merrimack rounds out the league s preseason poll with 18 points. FRIARS WELCOME 10 NEWCOMERS TO THE TEAM... The 2004-05 Friar squad will feature 10 newcomers, including two sophomores. Bryan Horan (Farmington, Conn.) played his freshman year at Providence during the 2002-03 season and played for the Cedar Rapids Roughriders of the USHL in 2003-04, where he tallied 33 points (14 goals, 19 assists). Jamie Carroll (Andover, Connecticut) played his freshman season at Iona College in 2002-03 before also joining the Roughriders in 2003-04 and posted 24 points (12 goals, 12 assists). Defenseman Marc Bastarache (Lynn, Mass.), center Dylan Cox (Newbury, Mass.), left wing Vince Goulet (Highland Ranch, Colo.), defenseman Trevor Ludwig (Grapevine, Texas), defenseman Mark Mulhern (Milton, Mass.), defenseman Greg Park (Lumsden, Sask.), right wing Jon Rheault (Deering, N.H.) and goaltender Tyler Sims (Forth Worth, Texas) makeup this season s freshman class. HEAD COACH PAUL POOLEY... Head Coach Paul Pooley enters his 11th season at the helm of the Friar hockey program. He ranks second all-time among Friar head coaches with 173 wins. He has led the Friars to a Hockey East Tournament title (1996) and two NCAA Tournament appearances (1996, 2001). In 2000-01, Pooley was named Hockey East Coach of the Year after leading the Friars to their highest finish ever in league play (tied for second) with a 13-8-3 record. Pooley also was named New England Hockey Writers' Coach of the Year. In 1994-95, Pooley became the first head coach to bring a team to the Hockey East Championship in his inaugural season behind the bench. In 1995-96, he guided the Friars to their second Hockey East title and first since 1985. He came to Providence after spending three years as an assistant coach at Lake Superior State University (1991-94), where he helped lead the Lakers to consecutive NCAA Tournament crowns. 2
