My first PCR board meeting was at the PCR Convention in Modesto this past April. For the Redwood Empire Division, the most important vote was the awarding of the 2018 PCR Convention to RED. It will be held at the DoubleTree Hotel in Rohnert Park from April 4 to April 8, 2018. Giuseppe Aymar, Ron Kaiser, and Dave Croshere have done a lot of work organizing the committee. If you would like to help on the Convention, please contact one of them. One of the ongoing discussions has been what to do about the Hawaii Division. It was decided to disband the Hawaii Division and attach them to the Coast Division. There are only 11 NMRA members in Hawaii and they have been inactive for a number of years. I have been appointed By-Laws Committee Chairman to amend the PCR Manual of Operations. It will be voted on at the Mid-Year PCR Board Meeting at the Western Railroad Museum at Rio Vista Junction on October 22. PAGE 2 OF 8 Cont next page
There were 84 entries in the model contest. The models from RED will be displayed at the Spring Meet on May 21 st at Monroe Hall. Guiseppe Aymar was unable to attend the Convention, so Dave Croshere ably handled the duties of PCR Contest Chairman with the help of Carol Alexander and Carol Skold. The Modesto Convention was at the DoubleTree Hotel which begins a string of three consecutive DoubleTree Conventions. Next year will be hosted by Daylight Division in Bakersfield followed by RED at Rohnert Park. I look forward to seeing you at the Monroe Hall on May 21 st for the RED Spring Meeting. Doors will be open at 11AM with sandwiches and refreshments provided by Mary Moore-Campagna. Peter Barnes Superintendent Message Enjoyed my one day outing to PCR Convention in Modesto. I learned about milk can deliveries and movement of mail and mail cars in the last third of the 19th first two thirds of the 20th century both by Bob Clark. So many options for operations... Then heard from Dave Bayless on how he switched the LA GM yard and environs for SP and UP and I no longer wonder why I tend get confused at new operating sessions. Experience is a big factor in doing the work in both situations. I need to see his presentation at least one more time to learn all he had to offer. The RED leadership is thinking about future venues/locations and programs/ clinics for our quarterly meetings. Please pass on your thoughts and suggestions to us as the Division is your club and needs your input to support your interests and needs. In a similar vein the PCR convention in 2018 sponsored by RED will benefit by as much RED participation is possible. Consider an open house of your layout or, giving a clinic on an aspect of the hobby that you are passionate about or, volunteer to help the convention organizers make this a success with strong support from local model railroaders. May your favorite RR and its train(s) run smoothly into Summer. Enjoy! 3 OF 8

Some Models from Modesto Show and Tell These five pictures are all that I could get from the 2016 Model Contest in Modesto. But as mentioned earlier, ALL of the RED winners will be on display at our meeting on May 21st. I know that the locomotive is another fine job by Dave Croshere, and the others are from outside of the RED area. Sorry for not following up on this important part of our RED meetings. Overall the Sierra Division did a good job on the convention except for the long hike to the clinic rooms. Some interesting layouts in different locations in homes! Having the WP people added to the variety of clinics and presentations. Didn t take any of the tours to other locations, but they seemed to be well organized and had good turn outs. Good job. Big Red s Workbench Tips and Techniques This is a short series of tips and techniques that have come from our fellow members as well as from some of the best craftsmen in our hobby. result. During the contest judging at the Modesto PCR convention I learned from two expert judges several tips on keeping glue from showing on finished wooden models. #1 Tip: Sand all edges of walls. Any glue that snuck out and dried won t affect the paint adhesion. On way to limit glue squeezing out is to roll the glued wood onto the siding in the direction away from the side that might show glue over run or squeezing seepage. #2 Tip: Don t install corner trim until after the walls are assembled. This also helps to make sure everything is lined up and square because you can still see the edges of the siding. After the glue on the walls dries, scrape out any glue in the corners by dragging an #17 Chisel blade down the channel. If wall corners and not quite square, remove some of the back corner post, before applying glue,to get a snug fit with no gaps. Saw judges even looking in under carriage details for glue over runs or window glass not secured. In contest points are deducted for these minor mistakes thus possibly not even qualifying to get a 87.5 score. PAGE 6 OF 8
