WEDNESDAY, APRIL 26, 2017 at BALTIMORE ORIOLES RH Alex Cobb (1-2, 4.88) vs. RH Dylan Bundy (3-1, 1.37) First Pitch: 7:05 p.m. Location: Oriole Park at Camden Yards, Baltimore, Md. TV: Fox Sports Sun Radio: WDAE 620 AM, WGES 680 AM (Sp.) Game No.: 23 (11-11) Road Game No.: 10 (2-7) All-Time Game No.: 3,099 (1,431-1,667) All-Time Road Game No.: 1,546 (614-935) RAY MATTER Last night s 2-0 victory set up tonight s rubber match, giving the Rays a chance to win their first road series of the season and become the first team to win a series from the Orioles in 2017 following tonight s game, the Rays fly to Toronto where they have an off-day tomorrow, their only break in a stretch of 35 games in 36 days (April 12 May 17) they are 6-8 in their current stretch of 15 games in 15 days, ending tonight, and Friday begins a stretch of 20 games in 20 days after the 3-game weekend series in Toronto, the Rays travel to Miami for 2 games, their first interleague action of 2017. The Rays snapped a 4-game losing streak on the road, as they improved to 2-7 on the road this year. Last night was the Rays first win that did not require a comeback since April 14 at BOS (10-5) 7 of their 11 wins have been of the comeback variety, 4th most in the AL the Rays have held a lead in 10 consecutive games but are only 5-5 over that stretch the Rays have blown a lead in each of their last 4 losses and 7 of their last 8 losses. The Rays drew 7 BB in each of the last 2 games, the first time they ve done so in back-to-back 9-inning games under Manager Kevin Cash (last Sep 2-3, 2013 at LAA). This is the third straight series the Rays are playing an opponent entering the series in first place in their division (DET, HOU, BAL). The Rays are 7-9 against AL East opponents, and 4-2 outside the division their first 14 games were vs. AL East rivals. JUST LIKE THEY DREW IT UP Due to the uncertain weather forecast last night, the Rays tapped RH Austin Pruitt to start the game about 30 minutes before first pitch Pruitt (3-IP) combined with RH Danny Farquhar (0.2), RH Jumbo Díaz (1.1), RH Chase Whitley (3.0) and RH Alex Colomé (1.0) in a 2-hit shutout after Chris Davis led off the 4th with an infield single, Rays pitchers did not allow a hit and retired 17 consecutive batters until Colomé s 2-out walk in the 9th. Last night was the first time the Rays had ever shut out the Orioles at Camden Yards on 2 hits or fewer they had done it only once at home: April 22, 1999, a 1-0 win by LH Tony Saunders. It had been nearly a decade since the Rays last played a game at Camden Yards in which 2 runs or fewer total were scored the Rays lost 1-0 in 10 innings on May 9, 2007 on a walk-off homer by ex-ray Aubrey Huff 88 games were played in between. A RAYS FIRST OR WAS IT? According to the Elias Sports Bureau, last night was the first time the Rays had ever used five or more pitchers in a shutout allowing 2 hits or fewer on June 17, 2015 at WAS, five pitchers (RH Steve Geltz, RH Matt Andriese, RH Kevin Jepsen, RH Brandon Gomes, RH Ronald Belisario) appeared in the box score but only four were credited with an appearance Gomes was announced but never threw a pitch due to a rain delay the Rays also changed starting pitchers that day, from Andriese to Geltz, due to pinch-hit opportunities in a NL park. The last team to employ five or more pitchers in a shutout allowing 2 hits or fewer was San Francisco on May 31, 2016 at ATL (five pitchers, one hit) the last AL team to do so was Kansas City on Sep 27, 2015 vs. CLE (five pitchers, 2 hits). 29 STARTERS IN NINE-PLUS YEARS RH Austin Pruitt became just the 29th different starting pitcher used by the club in the Rays era (since 2008), fewest in the majors, and the 13th of those developed by the Rays the Giants are next with 32; the Indians are the next fewest in the AL with 39 the Orioles have used 53 LAD and SD have used the most (65 each). 29 Starting Pitchers Used in Rays Era (Since 2008) How Acquired # of P s Total GS (pct. of GS) Developed by Rays (draft or int l) 13 890 (60.1 pct.) Acquired via trade 12 550 (37.1 pct.) Signed as free agents 4 41 (2.7 pct.) Total 29 1,481 TALE OF TWO PRUITTS Over his last 3 games (1 start), Pruitt has totaled 8.2 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 10 SO prior to that, he had allowed a run in each of his first 6 career apps, all in relief: 5.2 IP, 20 H, 12 R, 10 ER, 3 BB, 3 SO. RAYS vs. ORIOLES The Rays seek their first series win at Oriole Park at Camden Yards since Aug 31 Sep 2, 2015 (2 of 3) tonight is the third of 19 scheduled games (10 here, 9 in St. Pete) this 3-game series is their only meeting within the first 75 games of the Rays season, then 16 of their last 87 games are vs. BAL next meeting is June 23-25 at Tropicana Field the Rays have lost the last three season series, going 22-35 (.386) over that span (6-13 in 2016, 9-10 in 2015 and 7-12 in 2014) after going 66-43 (.606) between 2008-13 last year s 6-13 mark equaled 2006 for their worst record ever vs. BAL, and their 2-8 record at Camden Yards was their 2nd-worst mark behind 2000 (1-5). Evan Longoria has 35 career HR vs. the Orioles, his most vs. any opponent he has 20 HR at Camden Yards, 4th most of any visitor in OPACY history behind Alex Rodriguez (34), David Ortiz (30) and Johnny Damon (22) 34 of those 35 have come while playing 3B, more than any opposing third sacker in the Orioles 63-year history. CONSIDER THIS The Rays hold a.500 record (11-11) thus far despite a wide range of obstacles: 11 players on the DL, tied with the Dodgers for most in the majors this includes three potential starting position players (C Wilson Ramos, SS Matt Duffy, OF Colby Rasmus), four veteran relief pitchers (RH Brad Boxberger, RH Tommy Hunter, RH Shawn Tolleson, LH Xavier Cedeño) and No. 2 starter RH Jake Odorizzi. the bullpen, which currently lacks a lefty and has four veterans on the DL (see above), has had to throw 74.2 IP, 4th most in the majors and 2nd most in the AL (Angels-75.0). 6 players on the active roster were not on the 40-man roster at the beginning of spring training: OF Shane Peterson, OF Peter Bourjos, RH Jumbo Díaz, C Derek Norris, C Jesús Sucre and INF Rickie Weeks Jr. Hunter had been the seventh before going on the DL. the Rays are 2-7 on the road, including 1-6 on the first trip. 222 SO by Rays hitters, most in the majors and 34 more than any other AL team (Toronto). EARLY AND OFTEN The Rays have scored a major-league-most 25 runs in the 1st no other AL team has more than 15 (Seattle) Rays have scored multiple runs in the 1st inning seven times oddly, they are 0-4 in road games when they score in the 1st inning from the 1st-through-5th innings, the Rays have outscored their opponents 70-47 but from the 6th inning on, they ve been outscored 45-28. SOUZA BEING MANNY RF Steven Souza Jr. leads the AL with 29 hits and 17 RBI (tied with TEX Nomar Mazara, CLE José Ramírez and SEA Nelson Cruz), making him the first player to lead the AL in hits and RBI on this date since BOS Manny Ramirez in 2001 (34 hits, 23 RBI) the only other Ray to lead the AL in RBI on this date was Jonny Gomes (21 in 2006, tied with CWS Jim Thome) and the only Ray to lead in hits was Quinton McCracken (35 in 1998, tied with KC Hal Morris). Souza ranks among AL leaders with a.349 avg. (4th),.426 OBP (7th),.590 SLG (10th), 1.016 OPS (4th), 7 multi-rbi games (1st), 14 runs (T-3rd), 49 TB (2nd to LAA Mike Trout-57), 6 2B (T-5th), 11 XBH (T-5th) and a.478 avg. with RISP (4th). With 4 games remaining this month, his 17 RBI are already the most by a Ray in April since Ben Zobrist in 2013 (19) the club record for April is 25 RBI by Zobrist in 2011 they are his most in a calendar month in his career (prev. 11, 3x-last April 2016). REALMS OF COREY OF/DH Corey Dickerson is tied for 2nd in the AL in extra-base hits (13), two shy of LAA Mike Trout has 7 XBH in his last 7 games the lefty swinger leads all AL hitters with a.474 avg. (9-for-19) vs. LHP, after entering the season with a career.244 avg. vs. LHP he also ranks among AL leaders 24 hits (T-7th), 47 TB (4th), 8 2B (2nd), 5 HR (T-7th) and.635 SLG (3rd) since the 2016 All-Star break, his 47 XBH rank 2nd in the AL behind MIN Brian Dozier (55). BASH BROTHERS Steven Souza Jr. and Corey Dickerson are tied with LAA Mike Trout for the AL lead with 9 multi-hit games Souza (1.016) and Dickerson (1.002) are the only AL teammates with a 1.000 OPS or better they have combined for 96 total bases (Souza 49, Dickerson 47), most of any AL teammates ahead of LAA Mike Trout and Andrelton Simmons (91). REHAB WATCH RH Jake Odorizzi (left hamstring strain) is scheduled to throw live BP today in Baltimore had planned to do the same yesterday but rain prevented it. THIS DATE IN RAYS HISTORY Five years ago today (April 26, 2012), Brandon Allen delivers a pinch-hit, walk-off homer off RH Jordan Walden for a 4-3 win over the Angels it came in Allen's first official at-bat for the Rays, and was the fourth pinch-hit, walk-off blast in club history.
