BASKETBALL COACHES

WELCOME TO YMCA YOUTH SPORTS Thank you for agreeing to be a coach in the YMCA Youth Sports program. As a YMCA coach, you will introduce a group of young people to the game of basketball. We ask you to not only teach your players the basic skills and rules of the game, but also to make learning the game a joyful experience for them. You see, we want them to play basketball not only for this season, but also for many years to come, and we want you to have fun teaching basketballbecause we'd like you to help us again next season. Okay, let s get started. In this guide, you will find essential information about teaching basketball the YMCA way. In the first section, we will explain the philosophy of YMCA Youth Sports. Next is your job description for being a YMCA basketball coach, with reminders about how to work with this age group. Then we will show you how to teach basketball and provide you with a season plan and a complete set of practice plans for this age group. In the next part we will explain how to teach the YMCA Youth Sports Values. In the last section we will discuss risk management procedures. Please read the entire guide carefully and consult it regularly during the season. Your YMCA offers you the opportunity to participate in a YMCA Basketball Coaches Course. The three and one-half hour course will help you use this approach to teaching basketball and values.

PHILOSOPHY OF YOUTH SPORTS

YMCA OF GREATER HOUSTON PHILOSOPHY OF YOUTH SPORTS What we want youth sports to be at the YMCA is stated in our Seven Pillars of YMCA Youth Sports. Everyone Plays. We do not use tryouts to select the best players, nor do we cut kids from YMCA Youth Sports. Everyone who registers is assigned to a team. During the season everyone receives equal practice time and plays at least half of every game. Safety First. Although children may get hurt playing sports, we do all we can to prevent injuries. We've modified each sport to make it safer and more enjoyable to play. We ask you to make sure the equipment and facilities are safe and to teach the sport as we've prescribed so the skills you teach are appropriate for children's developmental level. We ask you to gradually develop your players' fitness levels so they are conditioned for the sport. We also ask you to constantly supervise your young players so you can stop any unsafe activities. Character Development. Honesty, Respect, Responsibility, Caring, Faith are about playing by the rules and more. It's about you and your players showing respect for all that are involved in YMCA Youth Sports. It's about you being a role model of sporting behavior and guiding your players to do the same. Remember, we're more interested in developing children's character through sports than in developing a few highly skilled players. Positive Competition. We believe competition is a positive process when the pursuit of victory remains in the right perspective. The right perspective is when adults make decisions that put the best interests of the children before winning the contest. Learning to compete is important for children, and learning to cooperate in a competitive world is an essential lesson of life. Through YMCA Youth Sports, we want to help children learn these values, and parents to do the same.

Family Involvement. YMCA Youth Sports encourages parents to be involved appropriately in their child's participation in our sports programs. In addition to parents helping as volunteer coaches, officials, and timekeepers, we encourage them to be at practices and games to support their child's participation. To help parents get involved appropriately, YMCA Youth Sports offers parent orientation programs. Sport for All. YMCA Youth Sports is an inclusive sport program. That means that children who differ in various characteristics are included in rather than excluded from participation. We offer sports programs for children who differ in physical abilities by matching them with children of similar abilities and modifying the sport. We offer programs to all children regardless of their race, gender, religious creed, or ability. We ask our adult leaders to encourage and appreciate the diversity of children in our society and to encourage the children and their parents to do the same. Sport for Fun. Sports are naturally fun for most children. They love the challenge of mastering the skills of the game, playing with their friends, and competing with their peers. Sometimes when adults become involved in children's sports they over organize and dominate the activity to the point that it destroys children's enjoyment of the sport. If we take the fun out of sports for our children, we are in danger of the kids taking themselves out of sports. Remember the sports are for the kids; let them have fun.

JOB DESCRIPTION

YOUR DUTIES AS A COACH Here are your seven duties as a YMCA basketball coach: Teach the skills and tactics of basketball to the best of your ability. We want you to teach children the physical skills and tactics to play the sport to the best of their ability. Kids value learning these skills and tactics, and they respect those who can help them master them. Be a good teacher, but remember that not all children have the same ability to learn. A few have the ability to be outstanding, many to be competent, and a few to barely play the sport. We ask that you help them all be the best they can be. Help your players learn the rules and traditions of basketball. We will ask you to teach your players the rules of basketball as they learn the basic skills through the modified games of the sport. Beyond the rules, we ll also ask you to teach the basic traditions of the sport. By traditions, we mean the proper actions to show courtesy and avoid injury in short, to be a good sport. Help your players become fit and value fitness for a lifetime. We want you to help your players be fit so they can play basketball safely and successfully. However, we also want more. We want you to do so in a way that your players learn to become fit on their own, understand the value of fitness, and enjoy training. Thus, we ask you not to make them do push-ups or run laps for punishment. Make it fun to get fit for basketball and make it fun to play basketball so they will stay fit for a lifetime. Help young people develop character. Character development is teaching children the core values caring, honesty, faith, respect, and responsibility. These intangible qualities are no less important to teach than dribbling or defensive skills. We ask you to teach these values to children by conducting team circles, which are built into every practice plan, and demonstrating and encouraging behaviors that express these values at all times. Ensure the safety of your players. You are responsible for supervising every aspect of your players participation in basketball. Make sure the court is clear of hazardous objects and that the kids do not engage in activities that might injure themselves or others. You have not only a legal but also a moral responsibility to supervise them closely. Help each child develop a sense of self-worth. An essential goal in conducting YMCA Youth Sports programs is to help children gain a strong, positive sense

of their worth as human beings. For each of us, our most important possession is self-worth. Please teach our children basketball in a way that helps them grow to respect themselves and others. Make it fun. Make learning the game a fantastic positive experience so your players will want to continue playing for many years to come. BEING A GOOD COACH Just what makes a good basketball coach? A person who knows the sport of basketball well. If you re not familiar with the sport, be sure to attend the YMCA Basketball Coaches Course and study more about the sport. A person who wants to teach basketball to young people, who cares. Excellent teachers are motivated, have a positive attitude, and give the time to do the job well. A person who understands young people, who possesses empathy. Empathy is caring about the young people you teach by showing you understand them. We hope you will do your best to be a good basketball coach for the children on your team. By doing so, you can help them develop their spirits, minds, and bodies the goal for all YMCA programs. YOUTH SPORTS PLEDGE Win or lose, I pledge before God to do my best, to be a team player, to respect my teammates, opponents and officials, and to improve myself in Spirit, Mind, and Body. Amen.

WORKING WITH 10 13 YEAR OLDS

Working with 10-13 olds COGNITIVE DEVELOPMENT Behaviors Shows an understanding of reason/consequence. Makes and carries out plans. Activity De-briefing negative group experiences through examination of cause and effect rather than focusing on the people involved. Give group challenges, initiatives, or projects. MOTOR/PHYSICAL ACTIVITY Behaviors Tremendous energy consumed (often hungry). May give little thought to other body needs. Body growth slows down until just before puberty when it accelerates (ages 10-11). Girls are 12-15 months ahead in development. Generally very healthy. R/L dominance established and manipulative skills increase. Hand/eye coordination well developed now children are ready for skill building. Late in phase boys and girls may be very fidgety and/or squirmy. Activity Be very careful to ensure that proactive health measures are taken (eating, liquids, sunscreen). Ask for feedback often. Be aware that children may be unsure of what is happening to them. Offer support and explanation that different and changing rates of growth are natural. Be sensitive to changing peer relations as physical changes create differences. Talk about natural differentiation in development. Introduce games and activities which give practice in fine motor skills. Begin introducing activities and skills requiring more complex movements and thought pattern. Be sensitive to activity lengths and amount of variety in format.

SOCIAL/EMOTIONAL DEVELOPMENT Behaviors Activity Is eager, enthusiastic and anxious to win. Is developing perseverance but interests may be short lived. Begins to doubt and become sensitive about self. Is learning about individuality through peers. By end of this phase physical changes may cause outbursts, fighting, and tears. Gang spirit and influence strongwants to be like others. Looked up to by younger children. Activities organized and own rules developed-realizes need for cooperation and mutual understanding. Channel competitive energy into activities which require the group to win without an individual or another group losing. Praise small victories and slowly build up to larger (or more complex) goals. Provide activities which illustrate the benefits of people with different skills. Ensure activities provide for success regardless of physical stage. Games emphasizing precise coordination can hurt self esteem. Emphasize the responsibility that comes with the freedom to make choices. Provide opportunities for leadership. Facilitate groups through processes which encourage positive group decision and norm making. LANGUAGE DEVELOPMENT Behaviors Can listen critically (detects flaws in reasoning of others). Questions validity of conclusions, evaluates. Activity Provide for discussion and de-briefing experiences.

FACTS ABOUT 10-13 YEAR OLDS 1. 10-13 years olds are experiencing dramatic physical, cognitive, social, and emotional changes that pervade their lives and often perplex them and the youth workers who work with them. 2. Three kinds of physical changes occur during early adolescence: The adolescent growth spurt The development of primary sex characteristics The appearance of secondary sex characteristics 3. Adolescence is a period in life when people grow more rapidly than at any other time their lives except infancy. For girls, this rapid growth spurt usually begins at about age 10 ½, with the peak occurring at about age 12. The growth spurt for boys begins about a year later, at around age 11 ½ and peaks at around age 14. 4. The normal variation in early adolescent physical development means that there may be a 6-8 year span in physical development between a slowly developing boy and a rapidly developing girl of the same chronological age. 5. Most young adolescents are excited by the body changes (or the expected body changes) that make them look more adult. At the same time, they are concerned about whether their bodies are normal and about how they will look when their bodies mature. It is easy to talk about the events of puberty in an academic fashion until we think back to our own adolescence and remember how a nose that was too big, breasts that would not grow, pimples, or lack of athletic prowess seemed to turn all of life sour. 6. As they pass through puberty, young people see themselves differently when they experience adults altered expectations, look in the morrow, and feel their body changes. This alteration in self-image and their increased self-consciousness mean that adolescents view themselves and their relationships to others in a new way. 7. Adjusting to dramatic body changes and altered (and sometimes conflicting) expectations from others makes young adolescents especially vulnerable to bouts of low self-esteem, moodiness, and intense emotionalism. 8. About one-quarter experience serene development; they grow and change gradually and with remarkable ease. About one-third develop in a manner characterized by surging stops and starts; they are impressively adult one day and childish the next. About one-fifth experience turbulent development; their behavior is stormy, but is is not abnormal or pathological. About one-fifth do not fit into any subgroup, but their tendency is toward continuous growth.

PRACTICE OVERVIEW

YMCA YOUTH SPORTS PRACTICE SESSION PLANS 10 13 YEAR OLDS PRACTICE 1 Warm-Up (10 minutes) Begin each practice with 5 to 10 minutes of warm-up activities to get players loosened up and ready to go. Players dribble, jump stop, and shoot, traveling from one basket to the next. All shooting should be two to four feet from the basket. Fitness Component (5 minutes) Key Idea: Flexibility Gather the team into a circle. Is there such a thing as stretching your muscles too far, or should you stretch as far as you can to improve your flexibility? Listen to their responses. Muscles should stretch only until you feel a slight pulling. You should never feel pain stretching. If you do, you re stretching too far. Choose a stretch for the team to try. I want you to stretch until you feel the slight pulling. Everyone will have different levels of flexibility, but all of you need to stretch properly to stay flexible and prevent injuries.

PRACTICE 1 Skills Drills (15 minutes) 1. Introduce, demonstrate and explain creating passing lanes. 2. Practice providing support for teammates by creating passing lanes. Description Play 3 v 1 games. Offensive players move to open space. Defenders play cooperative to active defense. Use offensive positions on one or both sides of the basket. Players pass, then move to an offensive position (point, wing, baseline, or high or low post) adjacent to the ball. Players should provide a target for receiving the ball, receive it in triple threat, and use a ball fake before passing. Emphasize using quick jab steps to create passing lanes. Coaches Cue: Target hands. Fake a pass, make a pass. Throwing action! Elbows! Finish! Quick cuts! Coach: What was the goal of the game? Players: To score following two consecutive passes. Coach: From where on the court did you score most of your points? Players: Close to the basket. Coach: Why is it better t shoot from a position close to the basket, rather than far from the basket? Players: More likely to score when closer. Game / Play (10 minutes) Goal Shoot as often as possible and create passing lanes. Description: Play 3 v 3 half-court games. Offensive teams must complete two or more consecutive passes before shooting. Players cannot dribble; all restarts occur at half court.

Practice 1 INTRO TO VALUES (10 Minutes) TEAM CIRCLE Key Idea: YMCA Five Core Values Gather team into a group. Have five cones set up five feet apart. We are going to talk about five core values that good players include in their games and practices. What are the five? Have a player stand at a cone when they provide each of the five values: Respect, Responsibility, Honest, Caring and Faith. Have another player provide an example of the value, then have that player join the other player at the cone. Assist players if they cannot think of all five. We will work to improve our basketball skills and physical fitness but these five values are just as important to learn and practice to help you become good players. We will learn about these values during our team circles.

PRACTICE 2 Warm-Up (10 minutes) Players in pairs play Around the Key - one player shoots; the partner rebounds and returns the ball. The shooter tries to make five different shots around the freethrow lane in 30 seconds. Players receive two points for each shot made. Fitness Component (5 minutes) Key Idea: General fitness Gather the team into a group. Who can tell me what warm-up means? Listen for their responses. They might mention getting the body ready to do more strenuous activity, increasing blood circulation, and moving muscles so they are more flexible and will help prevent injuries. Discuss their responses and other possible responses. Raise your hand if you think the muscles actually get warmer during warm-up activities? Listen to their responses. They do get warmer from the blood circulating and your moving. Give me some examples of good warm-ups. Choose one for the team to try. The warm-up is an important part of a good basketball fitness program. We will do a warm-up activity every practice.

PRACTICE 2 Skills Drills (15 minutes) 1. Introduce, demonstrate and explain how to shoot. Players should select only high-percentage shots, concentrate on their target, order movements (square up, bend knees and elbows, cock wrist), release and wave good-bye, extend the shooting arm up and out toward the basket. 2. Practice shooting. Description Players in pairs shoot three shots from each of five spots marked around the basket (about six to eight feet away). Partners rebound the ball and pass accurately to the shooters, who provide a target, receive the ball in triple threat, square up and shoot. The goal is to score on two out of three shots at each spot. (You could simplify the shooting goal from making two of every three shots, to shooting from two different spots for 30 seconds, or simply shooting three shots from each spot.) Coach: What was the goal of the game? Players: To score following two consecutive passes. Coach: From where on the court did you score most of your points? Players: Close to the basket. Coaches Cue: Square up! BEEF! Base firm. Elbow under ball. Extend arm. Follow through or flip wrist. Coach: Why is it better to shoot from a position close to the basket, rather than far from the basket? Players: More likely to score when closer high percentage shot. Game / Play (10 minutes) Goal Players will score as many field goals as possible. Description Play 3 v 1, 3 v 2, or 3 v 3 half-court games, depending on the skill proficiency of your players. Rotate players accordingly so that all players have a chance to play offense and defense. Players must complete two or more consecutive passes before attempting a shot.

Practice 2 INTRO TO VALUES (10 Minutes) TEAM CIRCLE Key Idea: Caring Gather the team into a circle. Have two cones set up 10 feet apart. Ask one player to demonstrate with you. Have the player accidentally trip you. Fall down as if you are hurt. Anna accidentally tripped me; what should she do? If you think she should apologize and help the player up, then raise her hand for a foul, stand at this cone. If you think she should keep playing and raise her hand for committing a foul, stand at this cone. Encourage all players to vote. Discuss why they voted the way they did. Tactfully explain the caring action so players don t feel foolish for not realizing they should help. When you accidentally trip or hurt another player, an opponent or teammate, it is important to help them up or see if they are okay. That shows that you care about other players.

PRACTICE 3 Warm-Up (10 minutes) Players in pairs play Around the World. Spots are marked in an arc around the basket, about 5 to 8 feet from the basket. Shooters follow a set pattern. The first player shoots from spot #1; if the shot is good, the player moves to spot #2. The player continues until he or she misses a shot. On a missed shot, the shooter may elect to stay there until his or her next turn, or chance it. This gives the player another shot immediately, but if the shooter misses, he or she goes back to the beginning. A made chance allows the shooter to skip the next spot. Fitness Component (5 minutes) Key Idea: Cardio-respiratory fitness Gather the team into a group. Who can tell me what cardio-respiratory fitness is? When you have good cardiorespiratory fitness, your heart picks up oxygen from your lungs and takes it all over your body. Ask three players to demonstrate. Have one ball ready. The players should be spread out in a line; the ball will be passed zigzag down the line. Stagger players so the ball is passed across to each other, one side then the other side, in the line. Let s set up our own blood vessel to carry oxygen to the muscles. Set up and perform the activity, with Player 1 being the heart, Player 2 the lungs, and Player 3 the legs. We need to run more to improve our body s ability to get oxygen to our muscles. That is improving our cardio-respiratory fitness.

PRACTICE 3 Skills Drills (15 minutes) 1. Introduce, demonstrate and explain how to execute V-cuts and L-cuts. 2. Practice V-cuts and L-cuts. Description Play 2 v 2 games with the focus on players using V-cuts and L-cuts, receiving passes, and using jump stops and the triple threat position. P1 ball fakes, jab steps, and passes to P2, who V-cuts as P1 is ball faking. P2 catches the ball in a triple threat position using a jump stop. Repeat three times and rotate. When all four players in a group have practiced the V-cut three times, go through the rotation again, this time practicing the V-cut on the opposite side of the court. When all four players have practiced the V-cut on both sides of the basket, go through the rotation again, using the same sequence to practice L-cuts on both sides of the basket. The defense should play passive cooperative defense. Game / Play (10 minutes) Goal Players will provide support to their teammate with the ball, using V-cuts and L-cuts to get open. Description Play 3 v 1, 3 v 2, or 3 v 3 short-court games, depending on the skill proficiency of your players. They receive one point for three consecutive passes, and two points for every field goal.

I demonstrated how time is wasted if someone isn t prepared for practice. I read and prepare before practice so I am ready. I want you to do the same. You have a responsibility to the team to be ready when it is time for every practice to start. What do you do at home to get ready for practice? Discuss responses.

PRACTICE 4 Warm-Up (10 minutes) Players in pairs play Around the World. Spots are marked in an arc around the basket, about 5 to 8 feet from the basket. Shooters follow a set pattern. The first player shoots from spot #1; if the shot is good, the player moves to spot #2. The player continues until he or she misses a shot. On a missed shot, the shooter may elect to stay there until his or her next turn, or chance it. This gives the player another shot immediately, but if the shooter misses, he or she goes back to the beginning. A made chance allows the shooter to skip the next spot. Fitness Component (5 minutes) Key Idea: Cardio-respiratory fitness Gather the team into a circle. What fitness area improves when we run more and strengthen our heart and lungs? Cardio-respiratory fitness. When we run more during practice to improve our cardio-respiratory fitness, what will start to happen? Listen to their responses. Discuss getting fatigued if they run too fast early in the practice. If you don t want to tire early in the practice, we can use a special test to help your judge how fast to run. It s called a talk test. A talk test can tell you if you re running too fast for your body and need to slow down. Everyone jog to the goal and back with your partner saying two points. You should not be out of breath while you re talking; if your are, slow down!

PRACTICE 4 Skills Drills (15 minutes) 1. Introduce, demonstrate and explain how to use a jump stop. Blow your whistle and have them sprint forward five or six steps. When they hear the whistle a second time, have them hop and stop quickly with both feet simultaneously hitting the floor, landing in a balanced and ready position. 2. Practice shooting off of jump stops. Description Play 1 v 1; defenders play cooperative defense. Players with the ball use a ball fake, jab step, and drive to the basket. They jump stop and shoot two to four feet from the basket. Watch for good form on the jump stops and shots; players should use the square on the backboard. Alternate players quickly so that there are not a lot of players standing around. Coaches Cue: Arm should look like a yo-yo. Ball down, eyes up. Two-foot jump stop. Eyes on target. In the square, in the basket. Coach: What was the goal of the game? Players: Drive and score. Coach: What s a good way to drive? Players: Drop step and dribble. Coach: What should you do if it s congested in the lane? Players: Stop and shoot if open, or pass off. Game / Play (10 minutes) Goal Players will drive hard to the basket and shoot. Description Play 3 v 3 half-court games. Give two points for scores off of drives, and one point for other baskets. Instruct defenders not to clog the lane so that players can drive. Defenders should play warm defense.

What is one important thing you can do at the end of every game to show you have respect for your opponent? Listen to responses discuss shaking or slapping hands, saying good game. Let s say some kids on the other team start walking away following a game. What should you do? If you think you should let them walk away without saying anything or trying to shake hands, stand at this cone. If you think you should say good game and hold your hand out anyway, stand at this cone. All players should vote. Ask why players voted the way they did. You should shake hands and/or say good game following every game; it shows respect for your opponent. If the other team turns away and doesn t participate, you shouldn t change your behavior.

Players should be ready and alert, position themselves an arm s length from the player with the ball and be able to put pressure on that player s ability to shoot, pass and drive. 2. Practice on-the-ball positioning. Description Pair up players. The player with the ball dribbles forward in a zigzag pattern. The defensive player maintains proper defensive posture and attempts to block the offensive player s forward progress. The defender tries to either steal the ball without fouling or cause a turnover. Players switch roles after one length of the court. Coach: What do you do to keep the opposing team from scoring? Players: Closely guard, rebound so they wouldn t get a second shot. Coach: What defensive position or actions interfere most and kept your opponent from scoring? Players: Keeping your body between the opponent and the goal. Being sure you can always see the ball. Guarding the opponent closely. Keeping hands and feet moving; playing active defense. Coaches Cue: Medium body posture. Active hands and active feet! See the ball! Anticipate! Game / Play (10 minutes) Defenders will play good on-the-ball defense. Description: Play 1 v 1 games with active to competitive defense. Offensive players can dribble, but as soon as they pick up the dribble, defensive players move closer and use active hands and feet.

If a team B player gains possession of a ball, that player dribbles toward the opposite sideline. When players from team A or team B make it over their goal line (the opposing sideline), they stay there until all balls are behind the sidelines. Team B is now given the balls and the game begins again. Fitness Component (5 minutes) Key Idea: Muscular strength and endurance Gather the players into a group in a small area. I want everyone to find a partner and balance back to back while sitting like a chair. I ll time you for one minute. Model the action for the group. What muscles did you use to hold yourselves up? Touch the different areas with your hand to show players the muscle groups of their legs, front and back. You use different muscles to perform different activities. Practicing using specific muscles improves your muscular strength and endurance that is, how hard you can dribble the ball and how long you can keep going before your muscles get tired.

PRACTICE 6 Skills Drills (15 minutes) 1. Introduce, demonstrate and explain proper off-the-ball positioning. Defenders should position themselves so they can see the ball, and they must keep track of a moving opponent who may be trying to get open to receive a pass. 2. Practice off-the-ball defense positioning. Description Paired-up players practice off-the-ball defense positioning (partners can also coach each other). As an option, you can have a player with the ball waiting to pass his or her offensive teammate. Coaches Cue: Medium body posture. Active hands and active feet! See the ball! Anticipate! Game / Play (10 minutes) Goal Defenders will prevent the offensive team from passing, receiving passes and scoring. Description Play 3 v 3 half-court games. Players can t dribble except to drive to the basket or reposition to make a pass. They must make at least three consecutive passes before shooting. The defensive team receives one point for each turnover and two points for each steal without fouling. Treat fouls like violations the other team gets the ball.

You need to have respect for the officials at all times. They are in charge on the court during a game. Don t argue with them; accept their calls and decisions. Muscles should stretch only until you feel a slight pulling. You should never feel pain stretching. If you do, you re stretching too far. Choose a stretch for the team to try. I want you to stretch until you feel the slight pulling. Everyone will have different levels of flexibility, but all of you need to stretch properly to stay flexible and prevent injuries.

Boxing-out is getting between the opposing player and the basket and putting their rear in contact with the opponent s body. 2. Practice boxing-out and rebounding. Description Play 3 v 3 games with 2 v 2 under the boards and a shooter and an outlet. The shooter shoots the ball. One the release, P1 and P2 turn and box out their offensive players. P3 (the outlet) moves right or left, depending on which side of the basket the rebound occurs. The player rebounding the ball turns and passes to P3. Repeat three times, then rotate offense to defense. The offenders try to outlet successfully three times in a row. Coach: What was the goal of the game? Players: To prevent scoring and to prevent a second shot. Coach: What did you do to prevent a second shot? Players: Got the rebound after the first shot. Coaches Cue: Create a stable wall between opponent and ball. Elbows out palms wide, feel for opponent. Put buttocks under opponents. Coach: How did you position yourself to get the rebound? Players: Moved between offensive player and basket. Game / Play (10 minutes) Goal Players try to prevent the offensive team from scoring and from rebounding missed shots. Description Play 3 v 3 half-court games. Use a competitive defense. Players can t dribble, except to drive to the basket or to reposition to make a pass, and must make at least three consecutive passes before shooting. The defensive team receives one point for winning or rebounding the ball after only one shot. Treat fouls like violations the other team gets the ball.

It s training the muscles to make them stronger and able to move longer before getting tired the next time you play. You ll get stronger and have more endurance every time you overload the muscles.

One player gives (passes) the ball to a teammate and goes (cuts) to the basket, looking to receive a return pass for a lay-up. 2. Practice the give-and-go. The offense practices the give-and-go three times, using L-cuts or V-cuts toward the basket; then players rotate. (The defender goes to offense; one of the offensive players becomes the coach.) Coaches Cue: Pass and cut! Target hand! Keep the defender behind you! Coach: What was the goal of the game? Players: To pass and cut; to present target if open. Coach: What happened when you were able to get open? Players: Ball was returned and shot was attempted. Coach: How did you get open? Players: Used a ball fake, ran ahead of defender, kept body between defender and ball on way to basket. That tells you your muscles are getting more flexible. Be sure to practice proper stretching to improve your flexibility.

PRACTICE 9 Skills Drills (15 minutes) 1. Introduce, demonstrate and explain how to set screens. Players should position themselves as a stationary barrier on one side of a teammate s defender, blocking the defender s path as the teammate cuts around the screen to get open. 2. Practice setting screens. Description Play 2 v 1 games with two other players acting as coaches. Offensive players execute screens. The defensive player plays active defense. One coach will watch to see if the screen is set correctly; the other coach will watch to see if the ball handler uses the screen correctly. The goal is to executive a screen successfully three times in a row. Coach: What were you trying to do in the game? Players: Use teammates positioning to lose opponent and attack the basket. Coaches Cue: Stand firm, straddle feet. Hands across chest ready to take impact. Roll toward basket or roll to a passing lane. Coach: Why is the teammates positioning important? Players: To create an open shot for the player with the ball. Coach: What would be a good body position for the player trying to free his or her teammate? Players: Wide base, bent knees, arms across body to protect self. Game / Play (10 minutes) Goal The offense attempts to screen the on-the-ball defender so the player with the ball can attack the basket. Description Play 3 v 1, 3 v 2, or 3 v 3 half-court games, depending on the skill proficiency of your players. Rotate players accordingly so that all players have a chance to play offense and defense. PRACTICE 10 Warm-Up (10 minutes) Players play 21. Two or more players are at the free-throw line. The first player shoots a free throw; a made free throw is worth two points. Players who make a free throw can then shoot a lay-up. A made lay-up is worth one point. If they make both the free throw and the lay-up they get to shoot again. Layups cannot be shot until the first free throw is made. Once players have made one free throw, they always get to shoot the lay-up. Shooters who miss a free throw shoot a layup, and then the next player shoots. The winner is the first person to reach 21 points. Fitness Circle (5 minutes) Key Idea: Training and conditioning Gather the team into a group. Do you think you should swim to get ready for basketball season? Raise your hand if you think swimming is a good way to prepare for basketball. Swimming is a good way to keep active in the off-season or other times when you don t have basketball practice. To improve your basketball conditioning either before or during basketball season, it s best to participate in skills you use in basketball. That is called specificity training because it is specific to the sport. What are some of the training skills we should be using for basketball? Listen to their responses. Running, shooting and dribbling would be the best.

PRACTICE 10 Skills Drills (15 minutes) 1. Introduce, demonstrate and explain how to maintain defensive and offensive positioning for jump balls. The player jumping with the advantage should have teammates aligned in an offensive formation and attempt to score off the play. The team without the advantage should line up in a defensive set-up. 2. Practice positioning for jump balls. Description Play 3 v 3 half-court games using a tosser and a player coach. The jump occurs in the offensive team s circle at the freethrow line; if the offense wins the jump, they try to score. Rotate offense and defense after each jump ball. The defense tries to win the jump; barring that, they try to force the offense to make at least five passes before shooting. Coaches Cue: Match up! Position for defensive jump ball! Drop back quickly! Protect the basket! Anticipate! Coach: What did you teammate do to gain possession of the ball off the jump ball? Players: Matched up with opponent on the jump ball circle. Coach: If you knew your team would win the jump ball, how did you line up on the circle? Players: Close to the basket so we could turn and score. Coach: If you knew your team would lose, how did you line up on the circle? Players: Between the opponents and their basket so we could defend the goal. Game / Play (10 minutes) Goal Players will gain possession of the ball off the jump ball. Description Play 4 v 4 half-court games. After every basket use a jump ball to restart play. Players rotate, allowing each to jump. The team gaining possession of the jump ball continues offensive play until they score or the other team wins the ball. Players call their own fouls.

Introduction to Family Huddles The Family Huddles have three goals. 1) To encourage practicing sports skills at home. 2) To encourage practicing values at home. 3) To strengthen the family through more communication and involvement. After each practice the coach will distribute the Family Huddles. Each week has assignments that relate to the weekly practice plan. The Family huddle will have drills that can be used at home. Each week the skill used in those drills will be the same skill covered at the weekly team practice. Likewise, the Family Huddles have activities and assignments centered on the value that was discussed during the Team Circle at the weekly practice. Hopefully, players will complete the assignments and turn them in at the next practice. If they do, the coach will reward them with the Values Incentives. Each age group and sport has a different incentive. The YMCAs encourage the coaches to make this a fun and exciting process for the youth. This is an important component to the YMCA Youth Sports programs.

CAR- Family Huddles for 10-13 Year Olds ING FAMILY HUDDLE #1 Introduction to YMCA Values Take Home Drills: You will need a partner for this exercise. Have them stand about 15 feet away. Pass the ball back and forth. Practice the bounce pass, chest pass, and overhead pass. Every few minutes, have your partner back up a couple of steps and go through the different types of passes. Family Fun The five values of the YMCA are Respect, Responsibility, Honesty, Caring, and Faith. Share with your family examples of each value that you would do in your everyday life or that you have already done at one time. Ask your family to give examples of how they use the values in their lives also. If not, use the side of a wall or just practice in an open space. Making a basket is not important at this point. Making sure your form is correct is important. Practice shooting from a short distance with perfect form. Every few minutes, move back a couple of feet. Do not move back farther than 10 feet. Once you have reached that distance, move back close to the goal and repeat with only standing on one foot. Family Fun Responsibility is one of the five YMCA values. There are many ways to be responsible. Being responsible includes doing your homework, keeping your room clean, etc. With your family, make a list of responsibilities for each family member and post them on the refrigerator. Have a reward, such as go to a movie, set up when all of the list is completed. Activity Fill in the list below of your favorite people. Dribble the ball from point 1 to point 2 with your right hand and from point 2 to point 1 with your left hand. Each time down needs to be done a little faster than the previous time. Continue for at least 10 minutes. Family Fun Respect is an important part of character. Talk with your family about the importance of respecting each other. For example, how should the family respect each other s property? How can you show respect for each other? Activity Write about a recent time somebody respected you. What did he or she do that showed you were respected? How did this make you feel? How were you able to show them respect in return?

Family Huddles for 10-13 Year Olds FAMILY HUDDLE #4 HONESTY Take Home Drills: Set up 6 objects in a line in your driveway. These objects can be cones, cans, or anything else you can find. Practice dribbling around the objects. Remember to keep your head up and use both hands. As you get better, try to go faster. Family Fun Honesty is another of the five values of the YMCA programs. The core of trust and honesty is in expectations. We expect people to tell the truth, be honest, and keep their word. They, in turn, expect the same of us. Those who meet these expectation gain and earn trust. Family Huddles for 10-13 Year Olds FAMILY HUDDLE #5 CARING Take Home Drills: Set up 6 cones (or cans) 10 feet apart in a zigzag pattern. Practice your sliding in your defensive stance from one cone to the next. Remember to stay low, hands out, and slide (do not hop). Each day try to continue for a longer time. This will build your endurance. Family Fun Caring is an important feeling to show our family and friends. How are you able to show your family and friends that they are important to you and how special they are. Discuss with your family how caring has affected each of you. Start with rotating the ball around your waist. Next, rotate the ball around your knees together. Then, rotate the ball around your head. Once you feel comfortable doing each individually, start rotating the ball around your head and keep working down. As you get better, do it faster and faster. Family Fun Everyone has a different definition of faith. One way to have faith is to believe in yourself and others. You can set goals for yourself and have faith that you can achieve your goals. Sit down with your family and set goals individually and as a family. Work hard to achieve these goals together. Activity Below you will set goals to become a better basketball player. When your partner does an imaginary shot, you will block out your partner who will attempt to get to the ball. Family Fun It is important to take time to share with your family. The discussions can be about how your day was or what you learned in school. Sit down with you family and come up with a discussion topic. After you feel comfortable with both hands, sit on the end of the chair and practice dribbling back-and-forth under your legs. Remember to keep your head up. Family Fun There is a risk of injury in many things we do. It is important to not risk injuries to yourself or others. Discuss with your parents important rules your should follow to reduce the chance of injury. Activity What are your own rules that will your chance for being injured? With each person dribbling a ball, try to steal the ball from the other person. As the game goes on, only dribble with your right hand, then just with your left. You can also make a smaller area that you must stay within. Family Fun For your body to be healthy, it is important to exercise at least 2 times per week. With your family go for a walk around your neighborhood. Remember that you need to walk quickly. Other forms of exercise can be playing soccer, basketball, swimming, or riding your bicycle. Try to get from a starting point to an ending point Then you should switch with your partner. Remember to stay low and keep your head up. Family Fun Team up with your local YMCA and help them raise money for their Partners of Youth fundraising campaign. This campaign is put on by YMCA s all over. The purpose is to provide funding for scholarships to children, individuals, and families in YOUR COMMUNITY that otherwise would not be able to participate in YMCA programs. Activity Make a list of people you know that you think would like to help by donating to the YMCA Partners of Youth Campaign. See how many friends, family, and neighbors you can get to donate.
