Evan Turner (2010) was the last Buckeye to earn national player of the year honors. Jerry Lucas claimed the USBWA award twice (1961, 1962). The Ohio University Series The Buckeyes and Bobcats have not met since the 1994 preseason National Invitational Tournament at St. John Arena in Columbus. Ohio won that game 78-67 but trail Ohio State in the all-time series 17-4. Jeff Boals, currently an assistant coach on the Ohio State squad, played for the Bobcats when they last defeated the Buckeyes. Boals made 7 of 11 shots from the field (14 pts.) while grabbing eight rebounds. Ohio State is 15-2 in Columbus vs. the Bobcats. The only time both teams were ranked in the series was Dec. 13, 1969, an 82-80 victory for the Bobcats. OU was No. 19, the Buckeyes No. 16. Ohio State has been ranked four times in the series, the last three times at the No. 4 spot in wins during the 1971-72, 1979-80 and 1991-92 seasons. A Look at the Bobcats Ohio University opened the 2013-14 season last Saturday at home vs. Northern Iowa, a 75-64 OU victory. The Bobcats finished the 2012-13 season with an overall record of 24-10 and a Mid-American Conference record of 14-2. The Bobcats featured Ohio State transfer Walter Offutt last season. He was second on the squad in scoring with 12.1 points a game. He was a senior last year. Another player with Ohio State ties is current senior Nick Kellogg, son of Ohio State great Clark Kellogg. Groce, now in his second year at Illinois, led OU to the NCAA Sweet 16 in 2012. Ohio is currently coached by Jim Christian, now in his second year. He and Thad Matta were assistants together in 1994-95 at Miami University. Ohio State vs. The MAC Ohio State has faced a member of the Mid-American Conference 65 times previously. Ohio State has 52 wins vs. the MAC and has faced and won at least one game against 12 of the 13-teams that make up the MAC. The duo were part of a team that won 34 games during their rookie campaign in 2011. Their sophomore season concluded with 31 wins and a trip to the 2012 Final Four in New Orleans. As juniors the pair led the Buckeyes to 29 wins and a trip to the Elite Eight in Los Angeles. Ohio State has averaged just over 31 wins a season the last three years. If the two reach that average as seniors, they would become the winningest four-year senior class in Ohio State history. David Lighty, who graduated in 2011, recorded 129 career wins in just over four seasons of competition. The position was available after Chris Jent, who spent two seasons as an assistant on Thad Matta s coaching staff, left the program to become an assistant coach for the Sacramento Kings in the National Basketball Association. Matta filled the video coordinator vacancy with Jake Diebler, a former assistant coach and studentathlete at Valparaiso. Jake is the older brother of Jon Diebler, who played for the Buckeyes from 2009-11. Della Valle Enjoys Productive Summer Amedeo Della Valle spent the summer after his freshman campaign with the Buckeyes playing for the Italian 20 and under national team in Tallinn, Estonia. Della Valle earned MVP honors in leading his countrymen to a 67-60 win over Latvia in the championship game of the event. Della Valle averaged 13 points, nearly four rebounds and 1.4 steals during the tournament. Veterans Make Up 2013-14 Roster When Ohio State took the floor in the season opener vs. Morgan State Nov. 9, Thad Matta had a veteran roster to choose from when selecting the starting lineup. Seniors Aaron Craft and Lenzelle Smith Jr. lead a team with nine upperclassmen (2 Srs., 7 Jrs.). Four starters return from Ohio State s 29-8 squad from a season ago. That team was a game way from winning its fourth consecutive Big Ten regular-season title and back to back Final Four appearances. Craft, already Ohio State s career leader in steals (249), is on track to take over the top spot in career assists as well. He also needs just 23 points to reach 1,000 for his career. Smith has started each of the last 77 games for Ohio State and has 97 games of playing experience as a Buckeye. Juniors Sam Thompson, Shannon Scott, La- Quinton Ross, Amir Williams and Trey McDonald also look to expand their roles this season. Craft Working on Historic Career In the near future, senior Aaron Craft will become the first Buckeye in history to record 500 assists, 200 steals and 1,000 career points. He also could reach 500 career rebounds as well. Craft already is the Ohio State career record holder in steals with 249, only the second Buckeye with 200 or more. He became the third Buckeye in history to reach 500 career helpers with eight assists vs. Nebraska March 15, 2013. He has a career total of 536 after handing out 172 as a junior. With 23 points, Craft will become Ohio State s 50th Buckeye to reach 1,000 career points. Over 114 career games, he has averaged 3.3 rebounds a contest for a career total of 371. Craft Moving Up Big Ten Steals Chart Aaron Craft is in the Top 7 in all-time steals in Big Ten history. WHAT THEY ARE SAYING ABOUT THE BUCKEYES... Team This team has the necessary ingredients mainly senior leadership to contend in the Big Ten once again and position itself for a deep postseason run. Scott Gleeson, USA Today #4 Aaron Craft This kid is the poster child for college athletics. He plays with great toughness and verve, and he is a natural winner. Seth Davis, Sports Illustrated and CBS Sports Take the pictures and put them away. College basketball may not see a leader like Craft for quite some time. A relentless on-ball defender and consummate fl oor general, this senior point guard has been about one thing during his collegiate career -- winning. Jon Rothstein, CBSSport.com Not only is Craft a very, very good college basketball player -- probably the best perimeter defender in the country for each of his three (very successful) seasons, as well as a morethan-capable fl oor general and team leader -- he is also quite possibly the highest-achieving student-athlete in college sports. Eamonn Brennan, ESPN.com It starts and ends with senior point guard Aaron Craft, the heady fl oor general who is one of the best on-the-ball defenders in the country. His knack for making big plays won t show up in the box score unless you re looking at the winloss column. Scott Gleeson, USA Today What Craft does best, however, is anchor a perimeter that will be absolutely stifl ing at times this season. He s probably the best on-ball defender in the country, capable of turning a trip into Columbus into a nightmare for opposing point guards. Rob Dauster, NBCSports.com Aaron Craft will continue to wreak havoc defensively and get under the skin of opposing fans. Nicole Auerbach and Eric Prisbell, USA Today He s a leader, he s a tough defender, he s been working on his offensive game. I m interested to see the things that he s learned from the camp and the things that he s accomplished this summer in terms of his game and see the difference between his junior and senior year. He did well against the other campers. He played me tough 2013-14 Ohio State Men s Basketball-12 Aaron Craft and I know he learned a lot at the camp. Kyrie Irving, Cleveland Cavaliers (CBSSports.com) His stat line (10.0 ppg, 4.6 apg) doesn t speak to his importance as a floor general. Craft s numbers should soar in 2013-14, and so should the Buckeyes. Scott Gleeson, USA Today Aaron Craft is now a senior, and many people oddly hate him despite his tremendous discipline and perfect fit inside OSU s system. Matt Norlander, CBSSports.com #10 LaQuinton Ross Deshaun Thomas was an awesome offensive talent at the college level, but I get a feeling LaQuinton Ross is going to make Buckeye fans forget about Thomas in a hurry. Matt Norlander, CBSSports.com There were a handful of moments in each of Ohio State s four tournament games in which Ross was clearly the best and most talented player on the floor. Eamonn Brennan, ESPN.com LaQuinton Ross, a 6-8 junior forward, has the potential to make up for lost production and his skill set is reminiscent of Thomas all-around game. Ross can step out on the perimeter to make jumpers, put the ball on the floor when he needs to, and score with an array of post moves. Scott Gleeson, USA Today The loss of last year s leading scorer Deshaun Thomas isn t debilitating because talented but enigmatic LaQuinton Ross emerges as a viable replacement. Brent Yarina, BTN.com With Deshaun Thomas gone, someone is going to have to take on the role of go-to scorer for Ohio State, and if last year s stretch run is any indication, Ross should be that guy. Rob Dauster, NBCSports.com Head Coach Thad Matta Matta has won or shared a piece of the Big Ten title five times in his nine seasons, and his Buckeyes won the Big Ten tournament championship in March even though the league was as good as it s ever been... Matta has elevated OSU to another level, a consistency that may be taken for granted at times. Andy Katz, ESPN.com The vast majority of college hoops fans probably don t realize how good Ohio State has been under Thad Matta... In a league where Michigan State and Indiana are considered the marquee brands, Ohio State has been outperforming them. Andy Glockner, Sports Illustrated Thad Matta has turned Ohio State into one of college basketball s most consistent programs by making the Sweet 16 four straight seasons and averaging 30.8 wins a year while doing it. So the question is whether Matta can win 30 again while making another Sweet 16, and I think the answer is yes. Gary Parrish, CBSSports.com #3 Shannon Scott A role player during his first two years in Columbus, this should be the year where Scott emerges as a legitimate threat on both sides of the ball. Jon Rothstein, CBSSports.com

Game 1 No. 11 Ohio State 89, Morgan State 50 Nov. 9, 2013, Columbus COLUMBUS-Shannon Scott scored a career-high 16 points and LaQuinton Ross, also starting for the first time as a junior, had 14 points and a personal-best 11 rebounds to lead the Buckeyes past Morgan State 89-50. Lenzelle Smith Jr. led the way with 18 points and spurred a first-half spurt for the Buckeyes, who improved to 93-18 in home openers and 89-22 in season debuts. Much of the drama vanished early after Ohio State scored the first eight points and built a 26-point halftime lead. Sam Thompson added 14 points and freshman Marc Loving had 10 for Ohio State. Scott had seven assists to go with his 16 points, while Ross registered his first career double-double. Just as he had in a 93-63 exhibition victory over Walsh, head coach Thad Matta brought Thompson off the bench and inserted Scott into the starting lineup. The combination of the quick Scott and physical Craft gives the Buckeyes one of the best pairings of defensive guards in the country. Plus, Thompson provided a lift off the bench. Morgan State had difficulty matching up with Ohio State. Justin Black had 13 points, Ian Chiles 12 and Anthony Hubbard 11 for Morgan State. Scott hit three 3-pointers - a career high for a game - in the first 2:05 to power an 11-2 lead. Notes: Ohio State leads the all-time series with Morgan State 2-0. The Buckeyes defeated the Bears 95-74 Dec. 27, 1994 in Columbus. Ohio State is 17-0 against teams from the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC). Five players scored in double figures for Ohio State: Lenzelle Smith Jr. (18 points), Shannon Scott (16) and LaQuinton Ross (14), Sam Thompson (14) and Marc Loving (10). The last time five players scored in double figures for OSU was Dec. 29, 2012 vs. Chicago State. The Buckeyes are 93-18 in home openers and 89-12 in season openers all-time. Ohio State has won 40-consecutive non-conference home games against unranked opponents. The last loss was Dec. 27, 2008 vs. West Virginia. Buckeyes held Morgan State scoreless for a 5:53 stretch in the first half, outscoring the Bears 16-0 during that time. Ohio State owned a 32-5 advantage in bench points. Ohio State had 55 team rebounds, the most since the Buckeyes totaled 60 against North Carolina A&T on Dec. 12, 2010. OSU held a 55-34 rebounding edge. The Buckeyes made 11 3-point shots against the Bears (11-24). Ohio State made 10 or more 3-point baskets only four times all of last season. As a ranked team (Associated Press), No. 11 Ohio State is 456-124 all-time. Thad Matta is 251-73 during his career at Ohio State and 353-104 overall as a head coach. Matta is 10-0 in home/season openers at OSU. Matta is 44-6 in the month of November as OSU head coach. Shannon Scott scored a career-high 16 points. His previous career high was 15 against Kansas (Dec. 12, 2012). Scott made a career-high four 3-point baskets. LaQuinton Ross earned his first career double-double with 14 points and 11 rebounds against the Bears. His 11 rebounds were a career best.
