Lever was reported injured, Stewards approved the following rider replacements. C. Lever was advised a medical clearance must be provided before he would be permitted to ride again. Race 2 Race 3 Race 6 Race 7 N. Heywood (a) on Boyish L. Grace on Quirimbas N. Heywood on Cod Rock M. Pegus on Santa Ana Lane RACE 1: Class 1 & Maiden Plate 1600m: Alfden- Rider S. Miller stated the gelding travelled fairly throughout the event but was very one paced when placed under pressure in the straight. He added his mount raced very dour and in his opinion would be better suited over a longer distance. A post-race veterinary examination did not detect any abnormalities. Sinister Sums- Raced keenly in the early and middle stages. Hampered passing the 200m when Jay Vee Elle shifted out and away from Magic Word. Miss Iwannabee- Checked after the start when crowded between Sammuka and Butler Butler. Our Sassy Girl- Steadied near the 300m when Alfden was carried inwards by Manuelito, which laid in despite the efforts of its rider. Magic Word- Hung out rounding the home turn. Manuelito- Proved difficult to settle in the early stages. Raced wide and laid inwards throughout. Steadied near the 400m when Pastiche rolled outwards. Sammuka- Bumped on jumping by Edge of Manhattan. Edge of Manhattan- Bumped on jumping by Sammuka.
Esempio- Steadied near the 200m when Pastiche (L. King(a)) shifted out. Apprentice King was advised to exercise more care. RACE 2: 2yo Handicap 1200m: Correct weight was delayed to allow connections of the sixth placegetter, Cosmo Star, the opportunity to view the official photo finish. When they were satisfied with the placings semaphored by the judges, correct weight was declared. Tyres Are Crucial- Change of Tactics- To be ridden more forward. Settled off pace. Raced keenly in the early stages. Rider B. Loy stated his mount travelled well in the early stages although the gelding did have a tendency to over race. He added when pressured in the straight his mount disappointed with its failure to respond. A post-race veterinary examination did not detect any abnormalities. Co- Trainer Mr P. Jones advised the gelding would now be sent for a spell. Grandioso- Slow to begin. Ran in abruptly near the 100m. Boyish- Began awkwardly and shifted outwards abruptly. Laid inwards in the straight. RACE 3: Maiden Handicap 1000m: Dundalk- Held up in the early part of the straight and was then taken outwards to improve. Il Bandito- Slow to begin. Beaujeen- Steadied near the 750m when crowded between Roaming to Win and Port Bowler, which was carried in by Dream And Journey which ran in and away from Foxlike, which was laying in. Hampered near the 100m and again near the 50m when Suneeze hung out. Rider B. Ward accidently dropped his whip near the 150m. Call Me Anything- Laid inwards under pressure in the straight. Roaming to Win- Trainer Mr S. Spackman was advised an official warning would be placed on the filly s barrier manners after it became fractious after being loaded. Began awkwardly. Suneeze- Hung out in the straight and proved difficult to ride out. Rider Ms K. Nisbet stated her mount raced very greenly throughout and hung out in the straight. She added she suggested to connections the filly may benefit with the addition of blinkers. Trainer K. Dryden stated it was his intention to do more work on the filly s racing manners and while he felt blinkers may make the horse race keenly he would experiment with the gear carried by the horse. Foxlike- Laid inwards throughout. Quirimbas- Slow to begin and showed no early pace. Ligny- Slow to begin. RACE 4: Maiden Handicap 1400m: Volpe- Change of tactics- To be ridden further forward. Settled off pace.
Danetrille- Raced keenly in the early stages. Steadied near the 1000m when Imitation Game (T. Berry) shifted in when not quite clear. T. Berry was reprimanded for careless riding under AR137(a). Gabriel- Bumped with Captain Charlie on jumping. Raced greenly in the straight. Rider M. Pegus explained his mount travelled nicely in the early stages but then appeared to get on the wrong leg and was not comfortable racing in a clockwise direction. A post-race veterinary examination found the gelding had bled from both nostrils. Trainer Mr H. Conners was advised of the provisions of AR53A. Captain Charlie- Bumped with Gabriel on jumping. Got its head up in the middle stages while being restrained off the heels of In Fright, which in turn was awkwardly placed on the heels of Graduate. Do It Al Dente- Steadied near the winning post when crowded to the inside of Imitation Game (T. Berry). T. Berry was advised to exercise more care. In Fright- Trainer Mr G. Egan represented by Mr A. Banks was fined $50 under AR140A for presenting the mare without winkers. Raced keenly in the early and middle stages. Steadied approaching the 1200m when Do It Al Dente shifted in. Briconi- Raced wide throughout. Sacred Son- Raced wide throughout. Special Thing- Steadied approaching the 200m and taken out to avoid the heels of In Fright. RACE 5: Benchmark 60 Handicap 2000m: Sir Ottavio- Began awkwardly. Held up between the 400m and 300m. Scraps- Checked on jumping between Tipta Tantivy and Moss Magic which was taken out by Sir Ottavio. Dynamic Concept- Raced wide throughout. Go Get em- Rider A. Hyeromimus stated his mount travelled well, although keenly throughout but when placed under pressure after straightening the gelding failed to respond. Trainer K. Weir could offer no tangible explanation for the performance and stated he will discuss the future racing plans for the horse and undertook to report the findings back to Stewards. A post-race veterinary examination did not detect any abnormalities. Illyrian- Stood flatfooted and lost ground (2L). Fracking- Held up between the 400m and 200m. Croix de Vie- Slow to begin. RACE 6: 4yo & Up Benchmark 65 Handicap 1600m:
Darts Away- Steadied passing the 1400m when crowded to the inside of Torhonour (S. Guymer). S. Guymer was advised to exercise more care. Struck the rail on several occasions between the 1400m and 1300m and became unbalanced. Heysen- Slow to begin. Trying- Slow to begin. Mysticism- Rider Ms K. O Hara stated she was given no specific instructions but after beginning fairly and when runners to her inside showed pace she elected to shift in and obtain a position with cover. She added the mare travelled fairly but found little when pressured in the straight. A post-race veterinary examination did not detect any abnormalities. Trainer Mr K. Goldman could offer no explanation for the performance and undertook to report back to Stewards should anything come to his attention regarding the condition of the horse in the days subsequent to the event. RACE 7: XXXX Gold Wagga Town Plate Quality Handicap 1200m: Santa Ana Lane- Laid inwards under pressure in the straight. Got Unders- Raced wide throughout. Ziggy Willie- Held up in the early part of the straight, Steadied near the 200m when crowded between Man of Peace and Got The Goss. Rider T. Angland explained his mount travelled strongly throughout but was unable to obtain a clear run in the straight due to the tempo of the event. He added the gelding did not appreciate racing amongst horses and would be better suited when able to get to the outside of runners. A post-race veterinary examination did not detect any abnormalities. Play Master- Bumped with Rock Royalty on several occasions near the 800m while laying inwards. Bumped with Ice Bucket near the 700m. Steadied near the 250m when Just a Blur was carried inwards by Santa Ana Lane (M. Pegus). M. Pegus was reprimanded for careless riding under AR137(a). Rock Royalty- Bumped on several occasions near the 800m. A post-race veterinary examination did not detect any abnormalities. Got the Goss- Rider B. Loy stated his mount enjoyed a good run throughout but when he shifted to the outside of Rock Royalty the gelding failed to run on. A post-race veterinary examination did not detect any abnormalities. Pretty Possum- Laid out on home turn and in the straight. Ice Bucket- Bumped near the 700m. Hampered near the 200m when Rock Royalty was bumped outwards by Man of Peace. Lord Von Costa- Began awkwardly. Held up near the home turn and was then taken outwards to improve. Hermosa Beach- Slow to begin. Crowded after the start. Held up in the early part of the straight.
Man of Peace- Held up rounding the home turn. RACE 8: Class 2 Handicap 1400m: Lord Laurie- Severely hampered on jumping. First Order- Began very awkwardly and shifted out abruptly. Bolshoi Devoushka- Held up in the early part of the straight and taken inwards to improve. Kingia- Hampered on jumping. Moving Target- Rider B. Vale stated his mount appeared to mis-stride near the 150m and as he became concerned with its action he did not pressure it in the run to the line. A post-race veterinary examination did not detect any abnormalities. Trainer Mr P. McVicar stated the gelding had previously had issues with back soreness which he believed had been rectified. He undertook to report back to Stewards on the post-race condition of the horse. Mr McVicar was advised the gelding must barrier trial to the satisfaction of the Stewards, after submitting a full veterinary clearance before the horse would be permitted to race again. Gun Trace- Got its head up while racing ungenerously in the early stages. Stewards noted the following riders exceeded the permitted strikes of the whip prior to the 100m under AR137A(5)(a)(ii): Race 1 B. Loy (Butler Butler) 6 strikes Race 1 Ms S. Metcalfe(a) (Sinister Sums) 6 strikes Race 1 M. Cahill (Villicana) 6 strikes Race 3 M. Cahill (Dundalk) 7 strikes Bearing in mind the totality of whip use, no action was taken.
