UNION UNIVERSITY Tommy Sadler, Acting Athletic Director Tommy Sadler Tommy Sadler enters his 24th year of service at Union University, but the first in his new position as the Acting Athletic Director for the 2008-09 school year. Sadler was named to this position following the retirement of Dr. David Blackstock, who had been Union s Athletic Director for the past 34 years. Sadler, a native of Jackson, is a 1972 graduate of South Side High School and a 1976 graduate of Union University. During his time at Union, Sadler played four years of baseball for the Bulldogs. In 1981, he received his Master of Education from the University of Memphis. His tenure at Union began in 1985 as director of public relations. After a year in that role, he became the university s director of corporate and foundation support, a position he held for 10 years. In 1996, Sadler then moved into his previous role as associate director of athletics. Sadler earned the Union University Staff Member of the Year in 1994. Sadler has also been very active in athletics at the conference level. He is beginning his eighth year as the president of the TranSouth Conference, of which Union is a member. Prior to this time as president, he served the conference as its vice president. Tommy Sadler has faithfully served Union University in a variety of ways through the years, but his key contribution has been in his work with the athletic department, Dockery said. He is respected by all of our coaches, by those who support the athletic program and by the leadership of the university. At this transitional time in the life of our athletic department, I know of no one better to help us chart a future course for that department than Tommy Sadler. Sadler and his wife Michelle, a teacher in the Jackson-Madison County School District, make their home in Jackson. UNION UNIVERSITY Head Coach Mark Campbell Mark Campbell is now in his tenth season as the head coach of the Lady Bulldogs. Campbell is coming off his fourth straight trip to the NAIA Fab Four, including two NAIA National Titles in 2005 and 2006. The 2007-08 season was a historic one for the Lady Bulldogs program as they recorded the first perfect regular season in Union women s basketball history. The Lady Bulldogs finished with a perfect 29-0, and an 18-0 record in the TranSouth Conference. After wrapping up the TranSouth regular season title, Campbell also led his 2007-08 team to win the TranSouth Tournament Championship. This marked the tenth time Union has captured the TranSouth Regular Season title and the ninth TranSouth Tournament title in the 12-year history of the league. Campbell has 291 wins to just 43 losses (.871). He is currently in second place on the all-time Union coaching wins list (current list: Blackstock-509, Campbell-291, Birmingham-198). Campbell s.871 winning percentage ranks No. 1 among active NAIA women s basketball coaches with five or more years of coaching. In his career as Union s head coach, Campbell s teams have won two NAIA National Titles (2005, 2006), seven conference regular season titles, and six conference tournament titles. He has reached the 35- win plateau three times in his career, while the 35 wins ties the school record for wins in a season. Since Cambell s first season in 1999, Union has graduated 43-of-44 (98%) players, student assistants, and graduate assistants. Campbell continues the winning tradition of the Union program which has accumulated the most wins of any women s basketball program (all levels NCAA and NAIA) over the last 5 years (Union 163, Tennessee 162, Oklahoma City 157, UCONN 152). Union ranks third over the last ten years among all levels of women s basketball with 322 wins, second over last 15 years with 484 wins, and since 1992, Union leads all levels of women s basketball with 484 wins. Campbell spent five seasons as a player for the Lipscomb Bison basketball team and graduated from Lipscomb University in 1994 with a Bachelor of Arts degree and from Union University in 1996 with a Master of Education. Campbell currently ranks 12th in all-time scoring at Lipscomb with 1,509 points. The 724 assists he accumulated during his career places him in the top five at David Lipscomb for career assists. Campbell helped guide the Bisons to five national tournament appearances, a 129-19 four-year record, and a national record of 41 wins in a season. 8 Head Coach Phone: 731-661-5344 Email: mcampbel@uu.edu After college, Campbell joined Union s men s basketball coaching staff as the graduate assistant in 1994 and then became the full time assistant coach in 1996. He worked under the guidance of fellow Lipscomb graduate and current Union men s head coach Ralph Turner for five seasons until being named the women s basketball coach in 1999. Over his career as the head coach of Union women s basketball, Campbell has been named the TranSouth Coach of the Year four times (2001, 2002, 2007, 2008), NAIA Coach of the Year twice (2005, 2006), and NAIA WBCA Coach of the Year twice (2004, 2008). Campbell serves as the national rater for the TranSouth Conference. During his time as a head coach for the Union University Lady Bulldogs, he has proven to be much more that a great basketball coach. Launched by the NAIA in 2000, the Champions of Character program addresses character issues more comprehensively than any other national program for youth. The program currently reaches hundreds of thousands of students on nearly 300 college and university campuses in North America and extends into their surrounding communities. NAIA - National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics Throughout its history, the NAIA has provided strong leadership for all aspects of intercollegiate sports. Since its introduction of intercollegiate championship basketball in 1937, the NAIA has maintained the highest standards while administering first-rate athletics programs. With its major emphasis on educational development, it was natural for the NAIA to strengthen academic eligibility requirements. All NAIA participating studentathletes must maintain a certain grade-point-average (GPA) while accumulating credit hours for a declared academic degree. Unlike other associations, NAIA student-athlete academic eligibility is monitored on a semester-by-semester basis. The NAIA includes more than 60,000 participating student-athletes. The NAIA offers 24 separate championships in 13 sports including baseball, basketball, cross country, golf, football, indoor track and field, outdoor track and field, soccer, softball, swimming and diving, tennis, volleyball, and wrestling. For more information on the NAIA, visit their web site at www.naia.org. The NAIA Champions of Character program is an educational outreach initiative which emphasizes the tenets of character and integrity, not only for NAIA college students, but for younger students, coaches and parents in our communities. Coaches, parents, administrators and community partners all have a role in developing students of character. The NAIA Champions of Character program brings them training, guidelines and behavior models to create positive environments that promote personal growth and fun sport activity. Champions of Character is a program of the NAIA designed to promote character development in youth and change the culture of sport. The NAIA developed the Champions of Character program in response to the growing problem of deteriorating standards of integrity in sports and society. At a time when all of sport has experienced increasingly abhorrent behavior by athletes, coaches, fans and parents, NAIA Champions of Character raises the standards for positive youth development in athletics and academics. The NAIA has been informally teaching character development through athletics for decades. Now our core values of respect, responsibility, integrity, servant leadership and sportsmanship are addressed comprehensively in the Champions of Character program. The NAIA sees a tremendous need to supplement character development in younger students from the elementary through high school level. Lessons on character and integrity through sports are a natural extension of classroom learning. UNION UNIVERSITY Previous Season Summary/Stats/Results The Union University Lady Bulldogs wrapped up another very successful season in 2007-08. The Lady Bulldogs posted the first perfect regular season in Union history, going 29-0 and 18-0 in league play. Their only loss of the season came in the semifinals of the NAIA National Tournament to eventual champion Vanguard (Calif.) University. The Lady Bulldogs also captured their tenth TranSouth Conference Regular Season Title and ninth TranSouth Conference Tournament Title, on their way to a 35-1 season record. The Lady Bulldogs rolled through their non-conference schedule unscathed. They entered conference play after Christmas break with an 11-0 record. The Lady Bulldogs continued their winning ways through the first half of their TranSouth Conference schedule. However, on February 5 an EF4 tornado struck the campus of Union University leaving the Lady Bulldogs in need of somewhere else to play for a couple of games. They postponed one game and moved another game to local high school Jackson Christian School. The Lady Bulldogs continued their winning ways despite the interruption and finished the regular season 29-0, and 18-0 in the TranSouth Conference.
