Newsletter for March 17, 2013 Presidential Ramblings Swinging Stars, as we enter our second month as your Presidents we want you to know how much we appreciate your support. We have both served as Presidents for other organizations but never have we experienced the helpfulness and warm embraces as we have with the Swinging Stars. We want to thank the other members of the board and the contributions that they are making to the effort. It is those that preceded this board that laid the foundation for the success that Swinging Stars is experiencing. We will continue as a board to bring some new experiences to the club while honoring the traditions that have been established. We will work to share the enjoyment of dancing with all we meet and continue to bring new students and members into the club. We thank Wayne and Jodie, Walter and Eula, Dave and Lorraine and others that act as our special mentors, who we rely on to help us along our way. We also want the board to know how much we appreciate all that you do. Mark and Karen, Bob and Terri, John and Ann & Gene and Phyllis, we appreciate all of your input and the work that you do. Also, we could not have the successful club that we have without the tireless hours of all of the committee chairmen and workers that cheerfully volunteer. God Bless! Richard and Jan p.s. If you have any suggestions related to the Swinging Stars please send me an email President@SwingingStars.org. I will use discretion and my share it with the executive committee and or the club, however, I will ask your permission before doing so. Please indicate whether you wish to remain anonymous to anyone but Jan and me. Swinging Stars Annual Fish Fry Sunday, Jun 2nd Save the date for this exciting annual Swinging Stars event hosted by our club caller and his spouse, Wayne and Jodie Baldwin. They invite all of the Swinging Stars to come to their home to eat all the fried fish you want. So please plan to attend. More details will be published soon.

Formula 51 Ladies and Gentlemen, start your engines.. We are quickly approaching the month of April, right after March. Are you ready? You all can dance mainstream but how well do you know the basic calls, the first 51 calls? Our callers in the NORTEX area promise a challenging month of Formula 51 calls. Swinging Stars will offer Formula 51 dances during the month of April on the 12 th and 26th. These dances will be great for our current students. The dance on the 26th will be "Out of this World." NEED YOUR INPUT Club Meeting We will have a brief meeting following our March 22 nd dance I promise to keep it short. We need to approve a couple of expenditures for our January 31, 2014 Anniversary Dance Dancing with the Stars Season Two. ROUND DANCE LESSONS The minimum number of couples needed for the round dance lessons being taught by JL and Linda Pelton at the Carpenter Rec Center in Plano has been achieved. We have 10+ couples signed up. Lessons start March 19 th so if you don t want to miss out make reservations immediately. Contact Ralph and Lucy Hamm if you have any questions or concerns about the lessons (email: rehamm45@gmail.com; Phone: 214. 872.7219). Register online at https://parks.planotx.org/econnect, or by phone at 972.208.8087, or in person at Carpenter Recreation Center at 6701 Coit Road. The course number is # 140236 CAR. For additional information, see the flyer on the Swinging Stars website: http://swingingstars.org/choreographedballroom_lessonflyer.pdf SWINGING STARS JACKETS Thank you Ralph and Lucy Hamm for modeling your Swinging Stars Jackets at our dance Friday night you both did a great job have you considered taking up modeling? I am sure you have seen a number of our members wearing their Swinging Stars Blue Jackets with Embroidery Lettering and some of you have asked about getting one of your own. Well.we are in luck. Note the following details & pricing: Satin jacket - kasha lined (as before) with (2) slash pockets Color - solid royal blue shell, knit collar & cuffs Embroidery - left chest with small logo and first name personalization

Pricing: (includes sales tax - f.o.b. swinging stars) 15 units 20 units 25 units Sm XL $59.34 unit $58.89 unit $56.35 unit 2XL $62.32 unit $61.86 unit $61.35 unit Now, you may be one of those that have asked, why would I want a club jacket, it just hangs on the back of a chair when we are dancing. The answer is simply that you want to show your Club colors and that you are proud to be a jacket-wearing-member of the Swinging Stars. That, and they look great. Just to clarify, you do not have to buy as a couple, you can buy one for yourself, but I would not recommend leaving your spouse out, unless you enjoy sleeping on the couch. Please contact Mark & Karen Hawkins, First VP s, 972-436-4868 or 1stVP@swingingstars.org to place your order the size can be confirmed when they come out with samples as soon as we have 15 units committed, we will arrange for the vendor to come to a club dance for sizing. We have twelve committed and need three more. * * * Note from Your 2 nd VPs * * * The theme for our note this week is dance attire, and specifically, club colors. You may have noted lately, that we have not been suggesting wearing our club colors to visitations the reason is that we do not want to not conflict with the natural colors for various themes by the host clubs (e.g. Valentine s Day, St. Patrick s Day, etc.) but we want to make you aware of the visitation colors the Swinging Stars use. These colors may be used at both visitations and home dances. The colors are aqua, royal blue, and deep purple and all three are planned for use in April see the calendar when it gets published for details. The aqua official club dress is manufactured by Square Up in California, and it is part of their Fiesta line of square dance attire. The order number for the official skirt is Fiesta #636 in aqua and the official blouse is Fiesta #136R in aqua. They are pictured on website www.squareupfashions.com and can be ordered at 1-800- 834-4222. Wearing the same color can be useful at big functions like the Houston Hoedown and other dances to make it easier to locate club members and also to make a show of club spirit and participation at an event. Buying the official dress is not required; you should ALWAYS feel welcome and definitely attend, even if you don t happen to have a matching outfit or color. We want you there having fun and dancing and that is always priority one. Cheers, Bob & Terri

* * * EVENTS FROM THE PAST WEEK * * * Dance of Interest Kissin Kuzzins, Friday, Mar 15 th Just between you and me, the obscene amount o green seen by the keen eye was not routine in the pristine crowd that did convene this March 15 if you were at the scene you know what I mean. Ha Ha The many Swinging Stars had a lively time at the Kissin Kuzzins Celebrating Everything Green dance. Cueing was provided by the effervescent JL Pelton who guided the dancers thru early rounds and between the tips. JL even offered the opportunity for DBD rounds asking if any of the couples wanted to switch positions on one of the numbers. Wayne Baldwin called the squares including an exciting workshop where the focus was on dixie chain to a wave and recycle, both DBD-style. As usual, Wayne s repertoire of great dance tunes kept the dancers thoroughly engaged that s why we love him so much. The Kissin Kuzzins were great hosts for the evening. And many of us enjoyed a refreshing social gathering at Dos Banderas after the dance. The 28 Swinging Stars in attendance were: Barbers, Bivins, Bursons, Hamms, Harrises, Hennebergers, Pittses, Rickerts, Roses, Sees, Smith / Hardin, Starretts, Stuarts, and the Underwoods. Dance of Interest Rebel Rousers, Saturday, Mar 16 th Another night of visitation dancing was on order with the Rebel Rousers Saturday night for their St. Patrick s inspired Riverdance themed evening. Rounds were expertly cued by Christine Hixson and squares were called by Mike Bramlett who continues to challenge the squares with his challenging versions of numbers choreographed with the first 51 calls in prep for Formula 51 April. Mike was joined in several tunes by his wife, Dee, and their son, Drew. The trio ended the evening with a dancer favorite their rendition of Fisherman s Luck. The Swinging Stars present included: Z. Kilejian, Maiers, Pittses, Rows, Rickerts, Ricketts, Sees, Smith / Hardin. Teen Scholarship Dance, Sunday, Mar 17 th The NORTEX hosted Teen Scholarship Dance was held at Swingtime Center in Ft. Worth with almost 120 attendees who raised more than $1000 for the teen scholarship fund from donations at the entrance (there was no normal entrance fee). Crazy hats were everywhere as many dancers supported the Mad Hatter theme including prizes for best hats. Rounds were cued by Chris Farabaugh and Mike Bramlett led the squares. Chris and John Pryor also led some fun line dances. The audience was also treated to a cool demonstration by the North Star Cloggers led by John if you are interested in clogging classes start in Grapevine Monday, Mar 18 th (see the Promenade for details). The Swinging Stars were represented by the Pittses and the Sees. * * * SPECIAL CLUB OPPORTUNITIES * * * ETSRDA It s GOLDen East Texas 50 Years of Square Dancing Festival Mar 22-24 th Location: Mineola Civic Center (Mineola, TX) Website: http://etsrda.com/etsrdaannualfestivals.html Caller: Headline caller Dave Viera, several area callers Friday night, Ron Mineau Saturday afternoon Cuer: Michelle Viera Notes: Some of us will be dancing in Mineola Saturday morning and afternoon and driving to Greenville for the Cotton Pickin Square anniversary dance Saturday night
