Our State Indoor Tournament had over 300 shooters participate individually and on teams over the two day tournament. It was a tournament that saw records, some of which had been held for years, shattered. MBH was well represented at tournaments all over the country during the 2013 archery season. The World Archery Festival in Las Vegas saw five of our members finish in the top five of their respective classes. Chris Berry and Jackie White topped the lists with their first place finishes in Bowhunter Freestyle and Senior Freestyle, respectively. At the National Indoor. The National Indoor Tournament, held in Louisville, Ky., we were very well represented with a large contingent of shooters. At the end of the tournament, MBH had twenty-five individuals placing in the top five of their class. Of those, six came home with first place finishes. The winning continued at the First Dakota Classic with four individuals placing in the top five. MBH was also represented at the NFAA National 3D Championships, the Outdoor National Championships and the IFFA World Indoor Championships. Participation was up from 2012 for both the MBH State Outdoor and the State 3D Championships. Our first State 600 FITA Tournament proved to be a huge success. Faron Teague and Indian Trails Archery did a wonderful job preparing for the tournament and everyone who participated said they would be back next year. The weather was absolutely fabulous with cool temperatures, which for a tournament held in mid-august was almost unheard of. In fact, the tournament was so popular that at a BofR meeting held in late August, it was voted on and approved to make this a two-day tournament instead of just a single day, which was the 2013 format. Several of our members have been featured in newspaper articles and magazines. Cole Duensing was presented with the Dave Gordon Scholarship by NFAA and was featured in the summer issue of Archery, the magazine of NFAA. Cassie Hancock was featured in an interview for the Palmyra and Hannibal newspapers, and that interview was picked up by the Associated Press and then appeared in newspapers across the country. Julie Griggs, one of our avid 3D shooters was interviewed by and featured in the Marshall News. Once we have received permission from some of these publications, we will feature segments of those articles in future issues of The Release. As we look ahead to 2014, the state tournament dates have been set and should appear in the Calendar of Events in this issue of The Release. The BofR wanted to make sure these were scheduled and published early so our member clubs can begin planning their shoots for 2014 and so everyone can decide when and where they want to shoot and begin making travel arrangements. Bow season begins on Sunday, September 15, and leagues all across the state are getting started. Several of the ranges around the state are holding beginner and intermediate archery classes, and introducing the sport to kids and adults alike. At this writing, the 2014 tournament season is just around the corner. This is your organization, and the officers and BofR welcome your input it is our goal to make sure your voice is heard and that we are making this a better organization for all of our members.

A message from your President Hello Everyone The MBH Outdoor season is officially over. We had a busy year with the final tournament being the State 600 round. We had a great turn out for this first ever MBH event. Everyone seemed to be pleased with the shooting format. I would like to thank Faron and his crew at Indian Trails Archery for doing a great job at hosting this event. On August 25th we had our B of R meeting in Columbia. We discussed many things including the Release. It was decided that effective in October the Release will no longer be password protected. The dates for all of this coming years indoor and outdoor shoots were also established. There was only one scholarship entry this year, therefore Chase Wilson was the recipient of the MBH Scholarship for 2013. Congratulations Chase, and good luck at Mizzou! Ryan Fitzgerald has submitted his resignation as Vice President of MBH. We will be taking nominations for this position. If you are interested please refer to the adjoining article on this page. By now I'm sure everyone has their hunting rigs out and fine tuned. Good Luck to everyone heading out to the woods. Don't forget to send in your pictures to be eligible for the many awards MBH has to offer. Most importantly, please be safe out in the woods. Call for Nominations for Vice President Ryan Fitzgerald has resigned his position as Vice President of Missouri Bow Hunters. As such, we are calling for nominations from our membership to fill this position. Jerry Denker has graciously volunteered to serve in an interim capacity until such time that the membership can vote and fill the position. The following is the resignation letter from Ryan: To the Missouri Bow Hunters Association (MBH) and its Board of Directors: This email is to serve as my official letter of resignation for the position of Vice President of the Missouri Bow Hunters Association (MBH) for the 2013-2014 term effective August 25, 2013. It is my understanding that another MBH member will be taking over the responsibilities as editor of the Release. In addition please remove me as an admin from the MBH Facebook page. Thank you, Ryan Fitzgerald The Officers and BofR of Missouri Bow Hunters want to wish Ryan well in his future endeavors. Before you know if it will be indoor season again. I am looking forward to seeing many of you at one of these events. Jason

The summer target season is now in the past and it was a great season! For me, it was one of the most enjoyable seasons I ve ever had. I am so glad that I made the journey to more outdoor/field style events. It s not only a great challenge but a learning experience that I feel has made me a little bit better shot than I was before. I just wish everyone would give it a shot this next coming year. Now that the tournaments are over (until indoor season), it s now time to focus on bow season! I have heard from a handful of hunters about some very nice deer on trail cams. Since the season is just a few days away, I m going to keep it fairly short until I have a story to tell from the stand. Until then, there is a few little things Hunting Season is almost here as I write this. I start off my season with as many evenings of Dove hunting as I can squeeze in before bow season opens on the 15 th of September. Now you may think Dove hunting doesn t have anything to do with Missouri s Archery Season but actually shooting at doves with your shotgun is great hand/eye coordination training which really helps tune up your eyes so that you pick out and recognize that small movement in the deer woods when a buck is trying to slip past you unnoticed. It also helps acclimate your mind and body to spending time back in the outdoors which helps to zero in your focus and become one with Mother Nature s sights, sounds, and time pace. The End Of One Season, The Beginning Of The Next that I want to refresh with everyone. I remind you of these not because you don t know them but because they are really easy to overlook at this time of the year. Keep your equipment in good shape, and check it over from time to time. Keep an eye on your bowstring and cables for broken strands or cuts from broadheads or any of the other things we find in the woods that might be hard on strings. On the same note, keep track of your peep height. Tie it in the string, mark it, and keep accurate measurements just in case it gets bumped or moved. Always find time to shoot your hunting rig throughout the hunting season to keep sharp on your shooting and check over your rig to make sure everything is in working order. LARGE AND SMALL GAME COMMITTEE Anticipation of the hunt really heightens your awareness and puts me in a state of mind that makes my world a much better place. I could go on and on about organization skills, planning skills, communication skills, listening skills, safety skills, and all of those types of things that are supposed to make you a better person and employee. In fact I usually start preparing my family and employer every year about this time for the upcoming self-improvement training I will be doing over the next several months. You see I will be MIA (missing in action) a lot of the time during hunting season When talking about shooting, shoot with the same clothing that you re going to hunt with. Lastly, hunt smart and get someone started in bowhunting. It s an activity that is supposed to be fun and exciting, so enjoy it! Take time to get out in the woods at least a time or two this year even if you are busy or can t find very much time, just take a day or two at least to enjoy the beauty of God s creations in a tree stand. Until next time, go shoot some arrows and maybe a deer or turkey! Aim Small and God Bless Cole Duensing Every year I try my best to inform my family and bosses that this training I am about to undertake is a very necessary re-tooling of my mind, body, & soul. Without this training I would not be the great husband, father, and employee that I currently am. The real trick is to ramble on enough so that they finally give in and just want me to shut up and get outdoors to hunt. Works every time! Jeff Blystone 816-805-3574 jandkbly@gmail.com

News From The Stump. By : Kathy Potter NFAA Director Missouri As I put pen to paper for this update, I m watching the weather and impatiently awaiting the promised cool front that will spell the arrival of fall. It s also a welcome indication that bow season is HERE! I ve preached this before, but to all those tree climbers out there please follow these simple safety procedures: Read the manufacturer's warnings and instructions before each season and use the proper procedure for securing the stand to a tree. Use only certified stand and safety equipment that are rated for your weight. ALWAYS use a fall arrest system when hunting from tree stand. Attach it to the tree from the moment you leave the ground, throughout the hunt and when you descend to the ground. Always use a haul line to raise and lower your gear. I m pleased to report that the new and MUCH IMPROVED NFAA website is now up and running! Please check it out at www.nfaausa.com and don t forget to update your electronic bookmarks. Registration for The Vegas Shoot should be available soon. Each year during September, NFAA Sate directors are asked to document and submit agenda topics for consideration at the National NFAA Directors meeting in February. I want to hear from YOU! If you have an agenda topic that you would like to see addressed, please mail (or email) me the details. I can t guarantee it will make the final list, but I will certainly pass it along for consideration. You can email me at potter.mbh@cvalley.net mail your thoughts to 1401 County Road 1255, Huntsville, MO 65259. This is your opportunity to be heard! For those of you who enjoy competitive Indoor shooting, the date for our NFAA sanctioned State Championship has been set! The event will take place on the weekend of November 30th. Once again, Shooters will compete only one day and multiple locations will serve as host sights. Further details will be communicated soon. I appreciate the opportunity to represent the NFAA members of Missouri for another term and I take this responsibility very seriously. Even if you don t have an agenda topic for the national meeting. I would be very interested in hearing your suggestions about growing the sport of Archery and/or building a stronger national organization. I look forward to hearing from you. Thanks and God Bless!! BIG BIRDS BAIT & BOWS www.bigbirdsbait.com www.trophytaggers.com/bigbirdbaitandbows Tom Big Bird Ciak Owner 216 N Main Street Maryville, MO 64468 (660) 582-8990 bigbird@bigbirdsbait.com Nodaho members Rick Horn, Bill Brookshier, Richard Piveral, Jesse Camacho, Jerry Brookshier, Shawn Leeper, Dakota Leeper, Sidney Leeper and T. J. Horn traveled to Columbia, MO on July 27 to compete in the State Show- Me Games target competition. Congratulations to Rick Horn for his firstplace win in the Male Senior Compound division (age 50-59) and to Sidney Leeper for winning the gold in the Female Cubs Compound Release division. As soon as the competition was over there, Rick, Bill, T. J. and the Leeper family traveled to Carrollton to also compete in the State 3-D tournament. Thank you to the Carrollton club for letting them make a delayed start on Saturday. Another Nodaho member, Larry Mincy, also shot the state tournament. Unfortunately, the Leeper family had car trouble and were unable to get to Carrollton on the second day. After the two-day competition, Rick won the gold buckle in the Senior Open (50 and over) division and Bill Brookshier the gold buckle in the Senior Open (60 and over) division. Quite a busy archery weekend! NODAHO BOW HUNTERS, INC. August had Nodaho members gearing up for their Appreciation/Night Shoot/ Camp-out weekend on August 10 & 11. Campers began to arrive on Friday evening and gathered for a fine meal with everyone providing their own meat plus a side dish (or two) to share. On Saturday morning, Jeanette Brookshier, Connie Randall and Glenys Morrow cooked a breakfast including sausage, biscuits & gravy and scrambled eggs for those in attendance before everyone headed out to set up the range. Following that, a couple of rousing rounds of archery golf was played in the pasture across from the archery range. As usual, passers-by slowed down and watched in disbelief as crazy people shot bows and arrows toward the flagged holes and traveled through the pasture on 4-wheelers. What a hoot!!! Saturday night was the night shoot with 42 brave souls shooting their bows with only tiki torches lighting the target. Congratulations to Rick Allen for his top score in the kids division and Cody Brittain for his win in the adult division. Those in the camp ground heard a lot of giggling and laughing coming from the range that night! The Appreciation Shoot was held on Sunday, August 11 with a great crowd of 169 archers competing. Thanks to all who came and to the many businesses and individuals who provided door prizes for the event. Full results for both the night shoot and the appreciation shoot can be found on our web site at www. nodahobowhunters.com. Hard to believe that archery season is right around the corner. Please be careful as you head to the woods! Jeanette Brookshier, Secretary
