P A G E 3 Nov. Speaker Bert Blanchette Before the first dive of the day, always make sure your BCD is holding air. It beats finding out it doesn t on the way down. What does the Coast Guard have to do with diving? What happens when there is a scuba accident? What causes most scuba accidents? The Coast Guard has the responsibility for safety on the seas. That includes the task of investigating scuba fatalities aboard a commercial passenger vessel. For Sector Los Angeles/Long Beach and San Diego, the DCI (Dive Casualty Investigation Team) is assigned the job of gathering information from such incidents, evaluating it and submitting a sequential analysis to the Sector Investigations Bureau. The DCI Team also projects patterns of risk and, through its Outreach Program, informs the public with the mission of enhancing dive knowledge and safety. On March 1, members of the Coast Guard DCI Team from Sector Los Angeles/Long Beach will discuss their team, their missions and case conclusions with the Whalers Dive Club. P A G E 4 Dec. Speaker Craig Gelpi Before the first dive of the day, always make sure your BCD is holding air. It beats finding out it doesn t on the way down. Craig Gelpi is the vice-president and chief scientist of the Catalina Marine Society. Craig was active in the administration of the internet dive club, the Sandeaters and was also an AAUS-certified diver at the Wrigley Institute of Environmental Studies (WIES) on Santa Catalina Island. His current ocean interest include understanding the currents, mixing and nutrient transport found in the Southern California Bight, and how the presence of islands, such as Catalina, affect marine life. Craig will talk about the formation and activities of the Catalina Marine Society. The CMS is dedicated to marine research of all types in our local ocean with the required resources being provided by our members and volunteers. Although newly formed, the CMS continues a tradition of ocean-lovers, especially divers, contributing to our understanding of this fantastic environment. Ongoing and proposed projects will be presented and their significance to local divers and Catalina Island will be highlighted. Picture source: www.awarenessmagazine.com www.fillmoregazette.com
