When removing the unit from its packing, inspect it for signs of damage, such as exterior dents and scratches. Keep the carton and packing material for return shipment if it should become necessary. INTRODUCTION The Detecto PL475 Patient Lift Scale is a complete 400 lb weighing solution that provides a fast, easy and efficient method of weighing a patient. The PL475 can easily be operated by one person. Through its use, patient repositioning within their room (e.g. from bed to wheelchair) and weighing time will be reduced to a minimum. Operation of the scale can be quickly learned using the following instructions and guidelines. WARNING - This product is not intended for use in transporting patients! It is to be used ONLY for repositioning a patient within the patient's room. Failure to observe this warning may result in serious injury to the patient and/or the lift operator. The Detecto PL475 Patient Lift Scale includes the PL400 indicator, which is a completely self-contained, battery-powered instrument that is used to determine the weight of a person suspended from the patient lift mechanism. The PL400 uses a single 9 volt Alkaline battery that is contained in a battery holder inside the instrument. Access is via a removable panel on the back of the indicator. The battery will power the indicator for months (depending on use) and has a low "BAT" indicator to alert the operator that the battery should be replaced. The canvas sling is machine washable using warm water and a mild detergent. Unpacking 1. Unpack and remove all packing material. 2. Check for damaged parts. SETUP INSTRUCTIONS 3. Install the battery in the indicator. Refer to the PL400 Owner's Manual, 8551-M912-O1, for additional information. 4. Turn on indicator to check battery charge. Purging Air From Hydraulic Cylinder Before using the lift, make sure no air is trapped in the hydraulic cylinder. This can be done by pressing down on the boom and letting go while the cylinder release valve is shut. A solid boom indicates no air is present. If the boom presses down and then springs up, the cylinder should be purged. Trapped air can result in an uncontrolled drop of a few inches while lowering the boom. To avoid trapping air, never raise the boom by hand. To purge the cylinder: 1. Turn the cylinder release valve clockwise to the fullest degree. Move the pump handle up and down slowly until the boom reaches its highest position. 2. Fully open the cylinder release valve counterclockwise, and push the boom down as far as it will go. Close the cylinder release valve, turning clockwise. 3. Raise the boom to the height at which it will be used by pumping the cylinder. Reference Figure No. 2 on page 5 for component identification. 2
From A Bed REPOSITIONING THE PATIENT 1. Carefully roll the patient on their side. Place the sling (with the attached straps toward their head) next to them in the bed and roll the patient back onto the sling. 2. Insert the (2) two white support bars into each side of the seat portion of the sling. See Figure No. 1. 3. Attach the lower support straps to sling by clipping the hooks into the hole in support bar. NOTE: Attach the hooks to the support bar so that the hook clip will be facing away from the patient when the sling is used. 4. Raise the boom to full height and wheel the lift to the patient's bedside. 5. Position lift so that the base is under the bed, and the sling support hoops are suspended directly over the patient. 6. Set the brakes on the rear wheels. 7. Widen the base stance. A. To adjust the base stance, face the rear of the lift and move the adjust handle towards the column. Figure No. 1 B. Rotate the handle until the base stance widens. C. Return the handle to a vertical position to engage the lock pin. D. To return the base to the narrow position, reverse the above procedure. 8. Turn the cylinder release valve counterclockwise to the open position. When the sling support hooks are low enough to engage the sling straps, return the release valve to the original position. 9. Attach sling to lift by engaging the sling support hooks in the appropriate straps of the sling. 10. After closing the release valve, move the pump handle up and down with slow strokes of even pressure until the patient is about an inch above the mattress. Make sure that no part of the patient or sling is touching any part of the bed or mattress. 11. Release the brakes on the rear wheels. The patient is now ready to be repositioned to a chair, wheelchair, bed or other structure. 12. To lower the patient, set the brakes on the rear wheels, then slowly open the release valve counterclockwise. 13. When the patient is in the chair, wheelchair or back on the bed, disengage the sling support hooks from the sling and remove the lift from the chair, wheelchair or bedside. 14. Remove the sling from under the patient. Upper Support Straps Lower Support Straps Support Bars From A Chair Or Wheelchair 1. Carefully lean the patient forward and place the sling (with the attached straps toward the patient's head) behind the patient. Slide the sling seat under the patient's posterior and return the patient to the sitting position. 2. Insert the (2) two white support bars into each side of the seat portion of the sling. See Figure No. 1. 3. Attach the lower support straps to the sling by clipping the hooks into the hole in support bar. NOTE: Attach the hooks to the support bar so that the hook clip will be facing away from the patient when the sling is used. 4. Raise the boom to full height and wheel the lift to the patient's chair or wheelchair. 3

Rotate the handle until the base stance widens. C. Return the handle to a vertical position to engage the lock pin. D. To return the base to the narrow position, reverse the above procedure. 6. Position the lift so that the patient is facing the pivot adjust handle. The base is around the chair or wheelchair and the sling support hoops are suspended directly over the patient. 7. Set the brakes on the rear wheels. 8. Turn the cylinder release valve counterclockwise to the open position. When the sling support hoops are low enough (above the patient's lap) to engage the sling, return the release valve to the original position. 9. Attach sling to lift engaging the sling support hooks in the appropriate straps of the sling. 10. After closing the release valve, move the pump handle up and down with slow strokes of even pressure until the patient is about an inch above the chair or wheelchair. Make sure that no part of the patient or sling is touching any part of the chair or wheelchair. 11. Release the brakes on the rear wheels. The patient is now ready to be repositioned to a chair, wheelchair, bed or other structure. 12. To lower the patient, set the brakes on the rear wheels, then slowly open the release valve counterclockwise. 13. When the patient is in the chair, wheelchair or on the bed, disengage the sling support hooks from the sling and remove the lift from the chair, wheelchair or bedside. 14. Remove the sling from under the patient. From The Floor 1. Carefully roll the patient on their side. Place the sling (with the attached straps toward their head) next to them on the floor and roll the patient back onto the sling. 2. Insert the (2) two white support bars into each side of the seat portion of the sling. 3. Attach the lower support straps to the sling by clipping the hooks into the hole in support bar. NOTE: Attach the hooks to the support bar so that the hook clip will be facing away from the patient when the sling is used. 4. Widen the base stance. A. To adjust the base stance, face the rear of the lift and move the adjust handle towards the column. B. Rotate the handle until the base stance widens. C. Return the handle to a vertical position to engage the lock pin. D. To return the base to the narrow position, reverse the above procedure. 5. Raise the boom to full height and wheel the lift to the patient. 6. Position the lift so that the patient's legs are between the base with their feet towards the pivot adjust handle. Lift the patient's legs. Slide the lift forward, placing the patient's legs over the back of the lift base. Continue moving the lift forward until the sling support hoops are suspended directly over the patient. 7. Set the brakes on the rear wheels. 8. Turn the cylinder release valve counterclockwise to the open position. When the sling support hooks are low enough to engage the sling straps, return the release valve to the original position. 4

After closing the release valve, move the pump handle up and down with slow strokes of even pressure until the patient is a few inches above the floor. 11. Release the brakes on the rear wheels. The patient is now ready to be repositioned to a chair, wheelchair, bed or other structure. 12. To lower the patient, set the brakes on the rear wheels, then slowly open the release valve counterclockwise. 13. When the patient is in the chair, wheelchair or on the bed, disengage the sling support hooks from the sling and remove the lift from the chair, wheelchair or bedside. 14. Remove the sling from under the patient. WEIGHING THE PATIENT 1. Press the ON/ZERO key to turn the indicator on. If the the LOCK feature has been enabled, the unit will display the last weight reading stored by the device and the LOCK annunciator will be on. Otherwise, the unit will display the current weight. 2. To clear the last weight reading stored, press the ON/ZERO key. The unit will then display the current weight. 3. Press the ON/ZERO key again to zero the display. 4. The patient is placed in the sling and lifted from the bed, chair (wheelchair) or floor. 5. When weight is stable, the STABLE annunciator will turn on. 6. If the Auto-Shutoff feature has been enabled, the unit will turn itself off after a stable weight reading is displayed for the preset time. Refer to the PL400 Owner's Manual, 8551-M912-O1, for additional information. 7. If the unit turns off before the patient was properly weighed, it can be turned on again by pressing the ON/ZERO key as described in steps 1 and 2. PREVENTIVE MAINTENANCE The information presented below can save you time and trouble, and if adhered to, will prolong the service and life of the Patient Lift Scale. 1. Do not lift the boom by hand. Use only the pump. 2. A small amount of oil will accumulate around the piston from time to time. This should be wiped away as needed. 3. Casters and axle bolts require inspection every sixty (60) days to be sure that the axle nuts are tight and that the casters swivel and roll smoothly. A light grease may be applied to the ball bearing swivel of the casters once a year, or more frequently if the casters are exposed to extreme moisture conditions. 4. The hydraulic pump is sealed at the factory. If service is ever required, the pump unit must be returned to the factory for repair. This is seldom necessary, but after many years of service, the seals may require a replacement. Please do not attempt to open the hydraulic pump to obtain local service, as this will void the guarantee, and might result in damage and costly repair. 5. Check that the U-bolt is securely fastened to the boom assembly. IMPORTANT! Periodically check and tighten all bolted connections. Failure to maintain tightness of bolted connections may result in injury to the patient and/or lift operator. SERVICE INFORMATION In the event that factory repairs are required, call the factory for service authorization. It is suggested that the inoperative Patient Lift Scale be tagged with as much information as possible regarding the nature of the problem. Refer to the Owner's Manual, 8551-M912-O1 for questions regarding the PL400 digital indicator. PROBLEM Weights grossly inaccurate. Display does not illuminate, or turns off soon after being turned on. Weight reading does not change when applying weight to sling or force to ends of support hoops. Instrument reading drifts randomly. Certain segments of display do not illuminate. Display is "locked up" - either over range or underrange. SOLUTION Make sure patient is centered in sling. Battery may be discharged. Replace. Instrument is defective. Call factory for assistance. Call factory for assistance. Call factory for assistance.
