EIU was limited to 35 percent shooting from the field while Bradley shot 58 percent. The Braves held a 36-18 advantage on points in the paint. Morris Woods and Alex Austin had double figures for the Panthers. Woods came off the bench to lead EIU with 14 points. Austin had 13 in his first collegiate game. WOODS A SPARK OFF THE BENCH Junior Morris Woods provided a spark off the Panthers bench in the season opening loss at Bradley. Woods had career highs in points (14), rebounds (8) and assists (4). Woods was 3-of-5 from the field but was able to drive to the basket and draw several fouls to finish 8-of-10 from the free throw line. Woods played in 24 games last season with a season high of nine points against Murray State. AUSTIN HAS A REPEAT PERFORMANCE Freshman guard Alex Austin had a pair of repeat performances for the Panthers in their exhibition win and season opening loss. In both games Austin finished with 13 points going 3-of-5 from 3-point range. As a senior at Chicago Mount Carmel HS, Austin knocked down 70 3-pointers. Against Bradley he was 3-of-5 including scoring five points to give EIU an early 15-9 lead. PIPER CONTINUES PERFECT STREAK AT THE LINE Sophomore Josh Piper ended the 2012 season making 16 straight free throws as he shot 92 percent from the line. Piper extended that streak to 18 straight during the season opener at Bradley as he knocked down both of his attempts finishing the night with six points. Piper s last missed free throw was on Dec. 10, 2011 at Western Illinois. JONES STILL A 3-POINT SHOOTER Senior Taylor Jones continues to specialize in shooting the 3-point basket. Jones knocked down a 3-pointer at Bradley for his only points of the contest. For his career Jones has 31 of his career 39 field goals from 3-point range. He is a career 32 percent shooter from beyond the arc. Two years ago 12 of Jones 13 field goals came from 3-point range. Last season he made 18 of 25 from long range. ALL TEN PLAYERS SEE ACTION All ten players in uniform for Eastern Illinois on Friday saw action in the season opener at Bradley. All but one player saw 11 or more minutes of action with Alex Lubsey the lone player with limited minutes. Austin Akers played a team high 35 minutes while Josh Piper added 32. Morris Woods had 25 minutes off the bench as EIU outscored Bradley in bench play 19-17. YOUNG LINE-UP Eastern Illinois started two seniors, one junior, one sophomore and one true freshman on Friday at Bradley and despite the diversity in class level the line-up was young in terms of game experience. The group had combined to start 12 games coming into the opener with Austin Akers starting six last season and Taylor Jones picking up six starts spaced across two years. ONE LINERS EIU shot 75 percent from the free throw line making 12-of-16 free throws at Bradley. EIU had shot only 55 percent from the stripe in the exhibition win. EIU had five steals and no blocks in the season opener at Bradley. Morris Woods was the lone player with multiple steals picking up two. EIU lost the battle on the boards at Bradley by a 35-25 margin with the difference coming on the defensive glass. EIU held an 8-7 rebound margin in offensive boards leading to six second chance points for the Panthers. Eastern Illinois Basketball Notes - Page 2

The Panthers finished 10th last season in the one division format missing the OVC Tournament. With the addition of Belmont to the OVC this season, the conference will play in two six team divisions. Murray State was picked to win the West Division followed by Southeast Missouri, Austin Peay, SIU Edwardsville, EIU and UT Martin. Belmont was selected to win the East Division after winning the Atlantic Sun Conference last year. OVC GROWS, SPLITS TO DIVISIONS The Ohio Valley Conference grew to 12 members with the addition of Belmont for the 2012-13 school year. The OVC will now play in Divisions - East & West for men s and women s basketball. Each school will play a home & home series within its division and one game against opponents from the opposite division (3 home games, 3 road games). The two eight schools in the conference based on record will advance to the OVC Tournament in Nashville with the division winners seeded first and second. SIU Edwardsville is now eligible to play in the OVC Tournament. Due to NCAA APR penalties, Jacksonville State is not eligible for the OVC Tournament this season. FATHER, SON COMBINATIONS Jay Spoonhour and his late father, Charlie Spoonhour, are one of several father/son combinations that have coached in collegiate basketball.
