Fort Hays State Notes Setting the Stage Fort Hays State and Kansas last met in exhibition play during the 2010-11 season, with Kansas winning 83-62. FHSU led by four early in the fi rst half, its largest lead of the game, but Kansas went on a 9-0 run to claim the lead and never gave it back. Kansas led by 10 at halftime. FHSU cut the lead to six early in the second half, but that's all the closer it got. Kansas was red hot in the second half, shooting 55.6 percent from the fi eld while holding FHSU to 30.3 percent. FHSU shot just 34.4 percent from the fi eld overall, while Kansas shot 51.7 percent. Melissa Nelson led FHSU with 25 points on 7-of-16 shooting with four 3-point fi eld goals. Nelson never made it to the regular season that year as she was injured in the next exhibition at Kansas State. She redshirted that season. Carolyn Davis had a huge game for Kansas with 35 points and 17 rebounds. She also had six blocked shots. The Teams in 2011-12 Fort Hays State is coming off a 20-9 overall and 12-8 MIAA fi nish in 2011-12. Fort Hays State fi nished fi fth in the MIAA regular season standings and made the MIAA Tournament for the third time in Tony Hobson's four years as head coach. Kansas State is coming off a 21-13 overall and 8-10 Big 12 fi nish in 2011-12. Kansas tied for sixth in the Big 12 regular season standings and advanced to the NCAA Tournament Sweet 16, where it fell to Tennessee 84-73. The Jayhawks are picked to fi nish fourth in this year's Big 12 Preseason Poll. Last Time Out (Exhibition) Fort Hays State fell to Kansas State on Thursday by a score of 68-57, but the Tigers were in the game all night. The Tigers held the lead for a good portion of the fi rst half and took the lead back early in the second half before Kansas State took the lead for good at the 18:18 mark of the second half. Fort Hays State pulled within two points on a breakaway layup by Melissa Nelson at the 9:39 mark of the second half, but Chantay Caron hit a key 3-point fi eld goal for the Wildcats at the 7:51 mark to extend the lead back to fi ve. The Wildcats steadily pulled away from that point on. Fort Hays State held the fi rst half lead from the 16:46 mark all the way to the 6:00 mark. The Tigers could have had the lead throughout the fi rst half, despite a scoring drought that went over nine minutes long that allowed the Wildcats to regain the lead. The Wildcats led at halftime 30-26. The Tigers opened the second half on a 5-0 run, but the Wildcats responded with a couple of baskets to take the lead back for good. Kate Lehman had a big night for the Tigers with a double-double of 17 points and 12 rebounds. She added six blocked shots, well over her average of 3.3 per game last year. She had 96 blocked shots in her freshman season. Katelyn Edwards and Melissa Nelson added nine points each, Traci Keyser had eight, and Kaiameka Brown added seven. FHSU had just seven points from its bench. The Tigers fi nished the game shooting 36.8 percent from the fi eld. Brittany Chambers led KSU with a double-double of 17 points and 10 rebounds, also adding a team-high fi ve assists and four steals. Ashia Woods was the top scorer for the Wildcats with 19 points. Chantay Caron added 14 points. MIAA Players of the Week Week of Player Last Time Out (Regular Season) Fort Hays State fell to Central Missouri 73-61 in the fi rst round of the MIAA Tournament on March 1, 2012. That ended Fort Hays State's season at 20-9 overall, the best mark yet under head coach Tony Hobson. However, the loss kept FHSU from claiming its fi rst ever victory at the MIAA Tournament, as the Tigers are winless at the event since joining the conference in 2006-07. Fort Hays State has made it to the MIAA Tournament three of the six years in the MIAA, all under Hobson. Traci Keyser and Kimber Weiser led the way for FHSU, each with 13 points. Fort Hays State's top two scorers, Kate Edwards and Kate Lehman were held to just a combined 14 points in the game. The Tigers were held to just 33.9 percent from the fi eld. Against the Opponent Fort Hays State and Kansas are tied in the all-time regular season series 7-7. The teams have not met in regular season play since the 1975-76 season, when Kansas won 72-32 in Hays. Exhibition Last Year Fort Hays State nearly pulled off a win in exhibition play last year at Oklahoma State, falling by a score of 55-51. FHSU took a three-point lead with 3:49 remaining in the game on a banked in 3-point shot by forward Janel Durler. A Kaiameka Brown layup with 1:49 remaining pushed the FHSU lead back to three, but a Lindsey Keller 3-point fi eld goal attempt went through for OSU at the 1:32 mark to tie the game once again. Down just two, Fort Hays State had the ball with a chance to tie or win, but a turnover with eight seconds remaining sealed the win for OSU. The exhibition was only a week before the plane crash tragedy struck OSU as head coach Kurt Budke and assistant Miranda Serna were killed in the crash. About the Jayhawks Kansas State retuns nine letterwinners and four starters from its 2011-12 squad that made the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Tournament. Senior Angel Goodrich returns for KU after leading the nation in assists per game with 7.4 last season. Goodrich was named to the preseason First Team All-Big 12 and was an Associated Press Preseason All-America honorable mention selection. Senior Carolyn Davis, KU's all-time career fi eld goal percentage leader, also returns for the Jayhawks following her season-ending knee injury. Despite only playing 23 games last season, Davis earned All-Big 12 First Team accolades and was also an honorable mention All-America selection. Fort Hays State Notes (continued) About the Coaches Tony Hobson is in his fi fth season as head coach of the Fort Hays State women s basketball program. He became the sixth coach in the history of the women s basketball program in the summer of 2008. Hobson guided FHSU to a 20-9 mark last year, the best record in his four years at FHSU. Hobson coached his 100th game at FHSU earlier this season against Emporia State and he has a record of 59-52 in four years at the school. His overall collegiate coaching record is 472-158 (.749) in 20 seasons at the junior college, NAIA and NCAA Division II levels. Hobson's full bio can be found on page 9 of the game notes. Bonnie Henrickson is in her 9th season as the head coach at Kansas, with a record of 138-121 to date. She has an overall record of 296-183 in 15 years of collegiate coaching and enters her 16th year overall this year. Three All-MIAA Picks Fort Hays State had three players earn All-MIAA honors in 2011-12, led by second-team selection Katelyn Edwards and third-team pick Kate Lehman. Crista Bechard was an honorable mention selection while Lehman was also named to the conference's all-defensive team. Edwards earned the nod in her fi rst year with the Lady Tigers after transferring from the University of South Dakota. The Crete, Neb., native led Fort Hays State in both scoring (14.6 ppg) and rebounding (8.0 rpg) and ranked among the MIAA leaders in both categories. Edwards recorded a team-high nine double-doubles and reached double fi gures in scoring in 25 of 29 games. Lehman burst onto the scene in her freshman campaign, blocking a single-season school record 96 shots. She fi nished the year ranked third in total blocked shots and fi fth in blocked shots per game (3.3) in NCAA Division II. She also recorded eight double-doubles on the year, with all of them coming within the last 16 games. The Newton, Kan., native was the third FHSU player to be named to the MIAA All-Defensive Team, joining Erica Biel (2008-09) and Kaniesha Pettaway (2010-11). Bechard was named an honorable mention All-MIAA selection for the second consecutive season. The senior from Holton, Kan., was FHSU's fourth-leading scorer, averaging 8.0 points per game, and led the team with 80 assists. Bechard started all 55 games in her two years with the Lady Tigers. The three all-conference selections were the most by Fort Hays State since they joined the MIAA. Academic All-American On Feb. 22, 2012, Fort Hays State junior forward Traci Keyser was named to the 2012 Capital One Academic All-America Second Team. The Capital One Academic All-America Teams, which are selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA), recognize the nation's top student-athletes for their combined performances athletically and in the classroom. Keyser was the Lady Tigers' third-leading scorer, averaging 9.7 points per game. She set a new single-season FHSU record for free throw percentage in each of her fi rst two years with the program and had another strong year in 2011-12, going 86.2 percent at the line (94-of-109). Keyser currently ranks in the top 10 in multiple all-time categories at FHSU, including eighth place with 96 made 3-pointers in her career. Keyser, a native of Cambridge, Neb., becomes the fi rst Academic All-America Selection for Fort Hays State since Sheena Kuntzsch was a third-team choice in 2008. She also becomes just the sixth Academic All-America selection in FHSU women's basketball history. Keyser holds a 4.0 GPA while majoring in Management and has earned the MIAA Academic Excellence award for the last two years. The Newcomers Fort Hays State has six newcomers to the team this year, which includes fi ve freshmen and one junior college transfer. The freshmen include Taylor Chandler, Beth Bohuslavsky, Alyssa Palmer, Paige Lunsford and Rachel Jacobs. All fi ve freshmen were all-state selections at their respective schools. Four of the fi ve were all-state fi rst team selections in their respective state classifi cations. Chandler was a part of a Wichita Heights team that went undefeated the past two years, 50-0 over her junior and senior seasons, while Bohuslavsky was a part of a Seward (Neb.) High School team that went undefeated all four of her years in high school (101-0). Tera Ingalsbe is the only junior college transfer this year, coming from Cloud County (Kan.) Community College. The Wamego, Kan. native was an All-KJCCC West Division Second Team and All-Region 6 Honorable Mention selection in 2011-12, averaging a team-best 12.9 points USA TODAY ESPN DIVISION II TOP 25 COACHES' POLL (Preseason 2012-13) Team Record 1. Fort Hays State Notes (continued) and 6.9 rebounds per game for the Thunderbirds. She looks to bolster the depth on the interior for FHSU. Shot Swatter Kate Lehman set a new FHSU single season record for blocked shots in 2011-12 with 96. That shattered the old mark of 64 set by Erica Biel in 2008-09. Lehman recorded a blocked shot in 26 of the 29 contests for FHSU in 2011-12, reaching at least fi ve in a game seven times. She reached a season-high eight twice in home games against Lincoln and Truman. With the 96 blocks last year, she is already fi fth on the career blocked shots list at FHSU. Ashlee Gustin holds the career record with 166 from 2003-07. Lehman, just a sophomore this year, could shatter that mark if she has an average similar to last year in 2012-13. Lehman was more than just a shot blocker for FHSU last year as she ranked second in scoring (10.7 ppg) and rebounding (7.1 rpg). She had eight double-doubles, including her monster 28-point, 17-rebound performance last year (season highs) at Missouri Southern, going 13-of-14 from the fi eld. Lehman scored in double fi gures 15 times in 2011-12. Lehman was an All-MIAA Third Team selection and was named to the All-MIAA Defensive Team. All-Around Performer Kate Edwards was the top scorer and rebounder for FHSU in 2011-12, as well as the team leader in steals (42). Edwards averaged 14.6 points per game, scoring in double fi gures in 25 of 29 contests. Edwards pulled down 8.0 rebounds per game and recorded nine double-doubles for the season in points and rebounds. She had a season-high 33 points against Lincoln, which was also the team high for the year, and a season-high 16 rebounds against Northwest Missouri State. She took 102 shots more than Traci Keyser, who ranked second on the team in fi eld goal attempts, fi nishing with 343 shot attempts for the season. Edwards shot 48.1 percent from the fi eld. She ranked second on the team in free-throws made with 86 and led the team in freethrow attempts (136). She was just one of two players to start all 29 games for FHSU last year. Edwards was an All-MIAA Second Team selection for her efforts. 2012-13 RECORDS WATCH: CAREER BLOCKS (SINCE 1984-85) Rank BLK YEAR 1. Ashlee Gustin 166 2003-07 2. Annette Wiles 142 1987-91 3.
