PRESIDENTS MESSAGE FEBRUARY 2017 Happy Chinese New Year, Gung Hey Fat Choy, 新年快乐! I hope everyone has enjoyed spending time with your friends and family. This is what it is all about, celebrating and starting off the new year with your loved ones. 2017 is the year of the Fire Rooster, - the 10 th animal sign in the 12 -year cycle of the Chinese zodiac. People born in the year of the Rooster are known to be very observant, hardworking, resourceful, courageous, talented and very confident. Once Chinese New Year arrives, the busy season for the lion troupe and dance performers also begins. Every year we average over 15 performances at various venues across Long Island and New York City. Our groups perform at restaurants, weddings, nursing homes, TV stations, schools, Boys and Girls Scouts and even the Metropolitan Museum of Art. The goal of these performances is to educate the audience about the Chinese Culture. Please support our kids by coming out to watch their performances. They do a tremendous job representing the Chinese Center on Long Island. Our performers spend tireless hours and energy practicing to ensure that when the curtains go up they are ready. If you are interested in helping out, or interested in joining any of the many activities we have, please come by and see Randy, any board member or myself, as we always need volunteers. We want to thank all our members who support the Center in the many activities we have to offer. Let s continue to move the Center forward! Wishing everyone a healthy, wealthy and happy New Year! Chris Chiu and Randy Yung, Co-presidents cclicchiu@hotmail.com, ccli.randy@gmail.com SAVE THE DATE February 3, 2017 Deadline for submittal of Journal family & business ads February 17, 2017 Deadline to reserve seats at Chinese New Year Gala March 18, 2017 Chinese New Year Gala SENIOR MEETING: 1

DIABETES PRESENTATION AND ART CONTEST JUDGING ON JAN. 25, 2017 Wednesdays, February 8th and 22nd (10:30am - 2:30pm) Wednesdays, March 8th and 22nd (10:30am - 2:30pm) From left, Mona Ng, Jack Kott, Betty Leong, Rachal Staiano, Patricia Santiago. Art Contest judges, from left, Elaine Chu, Warren Chew, Lily Lee, Emma Don, Betty Leong. Patricia Santiago, our January presenter from the American Diabetes Association (ADA), is a certified registered nurse with over 20 years of experience. She and Rachal Staiano, an intern with ADA studying nutrition at Adelphi University, gave a presentation on diabetes and nutrition at our January senior meeting. Patricia first gave the audience a diabetes risk test to fill out to see if we were at risk for Type 2 diabetes. She also explained how the body breaks down food into glucose and insulin then moves the blood into your cells. In a person with diabetes, there is a problem with the insulin. Patricia described the warning signs of diabetes and how you can manage diabetes by checking your A1C, blood pressure and cholesterol, through a proper diet, physical activity and taking the proper medication. Patricia demonstrated some simple chair exercises we can do at work or at home. There was a good discussion about how rice is a staple in the Asian diet but we should only include a small amount in our meal. Rachal and Patricia described dividing a 9-inch plate into 3 sections. The largest section should contain nonstarchy vegetables, the two smaller sections should contain starchy foods such as rice or noodles with the other section containing protein foods such as fish, chicken or eggs. The informative presentation ended with many questions during the Q & A session. After our presentation, our seniors celebrated the Chinese New Year with all types of home cooked New Year food cooked by our seniors such as Prosperity Cakes (Fa Goh), Nian Goh, vegetarian dishes, Long life noodles and more. Thank you to our seniors for contributing so many fantastic dishes! Our seniors helped out with our annual art contest by being our judges for our 3 age groups. It was a tough job as our children submitted such wonderful drawings. Thank you to Elaine Chu, Warren Chew, Lily Lee, Emma Don and Betty Leong for being our judges! The senior group wants to wish all our members a healthy, happy and prosperous Year of the Rooster. May all your wishes come true!
