Things begin in Reno, the Biggest Little City in the World with the World Vision Classic hosted by Nevada. In its program history, the Phoenix has played its three opponents in the tournament a combined two times - wins over Southern Utah and Cal State Fullerton in 1995 and 1997, respectively. The Phoenix will be playing in a regular season tournament for the first time since appearing in the CBI in 2010-11 when the team played at Marquette and then three games at Miami (OH). After his career-high 31 points in the opening win over Chicago State, sophomore Keifer Sykes will play Friday as the nation s leading scorer. Sykes made a program record 17 free throws in the victory, in which Green Bay also broke the program record with 41 made free throws. THREE-POINT PLAY 1. ELITE COMPANY: Alec Brown was in elite company in 2011-12. The 7-foot-1 Brown, then a sophomore, was one of only two players to average at least 13 points, eight rebounds and three blocks per game. The other? Kentucky s Anthony Davis, who was selected first overall in the 2012 NBA Draft. Brown is a Preseason All-Horizon League First-Team selection heading into 2012-13. 2. WHERE HE LEFT OFF: Sophomore Keifer Sykes picked up this season where he left off in 2011-12, winning the Horizon League s first player of the week honor. The 5-foot-11 guard posted a new career high with 31 points in the opening win over Chicago State. Then a freshman, Sykes also claimed the league s last weekly award in 2011-12 when he scored a career-high 27 points against another team from his hometown, at UIC. 3. OLD FOR 18: Sykes entered the 2012-13 season as a starting point guard and a team captain. He entered as a Preseason All-Horizon League Second-Team. He entered the year after a season in which he scored 335 points and was named to the Horizon League All-Newcomer Team. Amazingly, he also entered as an 18-year old, and he will stay that way through the first 13 games of his sophomore campaign. After playing his first 13 games at age 17, Sykes is now averaging 15.6 in 18 games as an 18-year old. GREEN BAY PROBABLE STARTERS No. Name Pos. Yr. Ht. Wt. ROAD TRIPPIN : Life on the road starts for the Phoenix in Reno, where it begins a stretch of four games in five days. In its 44th season, Green Bay men s basketball has played 1,271 games but has never played a game in the state of Nevada or against a team from the state. FREE FOR ALL: Green Bay s offensive struggles on Saturday did not stop the team from breaking long-standing school records or from surpassing 70 points. The Phoenix knocked down a school-record 41 free throws (41-48) against Chicago State, breaking a program record which had stood for 32-plus years since Feb. 23, 1980 (37 vs. Northland). Sykes had 17 of the team s free throws (17-19), breaking the individual record of 15 previously shared by Jeff Nordgaard (at Milwaukee, 1/15/95) and Dennis Woelffler (vs. Dominican, 2/19/70). THIRTY-SOMETHING: Sykes effort against Chicago State was the first 30-point game by a Phoenix player since Troy Cotton tallied 36 at Akron on March 17, 2010 and the first under head coach Brian Wardle. It was also the fifth time that a Phoenix player had notched 30 or more points in the Resch Center and first since Ryan Tillema scored 32 against UIC on Feb. 25, 2008. BLOCK PARTY: In his time at Green Bay, 7-foot-1 Alec Brown has swatted 158 shots to shatter the Phoenix career record. With 89 blocks as a sophomore, Brown averaged 3.0 per game, a number that ranked in the top-10 nationally. Another 36 combined blocks from Brennan Cougill and Greg Mays helped the team register a school-record 142 for the year. TALL ORDER: Wardle pledged early on in his tenure to add height and length to the program and has accomplished that as the roster s 14 players have an average height of over 6-foot-5. The addition of Ryan Bross gives Green Bay a pair of 7-footers, and six others stand at least 6-foot-6 to make Green Bay one of the tallest teams in the Horizon League. Sykes is the roster s lone player under six feet tall. The Phoenix will play 13 games in 2012-13 against nine teams that won at least 20 games a season ago. After opening with a home contest against Chicago State, Green Bay now plays seven of its next eight games away from home. Green Bay will play in a tournament for the first time since 2010-11, heading to Reno, Nev., for the World Vision Classic. The Phoenix will play Southern Utah, Cal State Fullerton and Nevada, a team which won 28 games in 2011-12. The Phoenix play three games against teams from BCS conferences, including Virginia (Dec. 1), Wisconsin (Dec. 12) and Marquette (Dec. 19). OPENING DAY Green Bay improved to 26-18 all-time in its season openers, and has started the past three seasons at home. The Phoenix has won 10 home openers in a row, with its last loss coming to Wisconsin in 69-52 on Nov. 30, 2002. Green Bay is 23-2 in home openers sine 1987-88. RISING EXPECTATIONS With its five starters back from the end of last season, Green Bay is expected to rise up the Horizon League standings this season. The Phoenix was picked in the preseason poll by the league s head coaches, media relations directors and media members to finish third in the league standings, behind de- fending league champion Valpo and defending tournament champion Detroit. PRESEASON ALL-HORIZON LEAGUE Junior Alec Brown was voted to the Preseason All-Horizon League First Team. Sophomore Keifer Sykes, an All-Newcomer Team selection as a freshman, was named to the Preseason All-Horizon League Second Team. The Horizon League is the only conference in the country that returns all five of its first-team all-conference players. Detroit s Ray McCallum, Valpo s Ryan Broekhoff and Kevin Van Wijk and Youngstown State s Kendrick Perry join Brown on the first team. WHAT CAN BROWN DO FOR YOU? Through his first two seasons, Alec Brown has positioned himself to become one of the best players in program history. He became the first sophomore in 18 seasons to be named first-team all-conference (Jeff Nordgaard in 1993-94 and Tony Bennett in 1989-90 were the last two). His 739 points were the fourth-most through a sophomore season in the program s Division I era. Brown s 425 rebounds were the most by a Green Bay player through a sophomore campaign in DI history. The 7-foot-1 Brown has reached double figures in 41 of 62 games and made 61 starts. With at least one block in 55 of 63 games, Brown holds the program records for blocks in a career (158), season (89) and game (11). 2012-13 Green Bay Roster No. Name Pos. Yr. Ht. Wt. Sykes was named to the All-Newcomer Team in the Horizon League after leading all conference freshmen in points, assists and assist-to-to ratio. He was the runner-up to junior transfer Julius Mays of Wright State in Newcomer of the Year voting. He improved down the stretch, averaging 14.7 points over the last 17 games while dishing out 4.8 assists and scoring in double figures 16 times. Sykes 335 points were the most scored by a Phoenix freshman since the legendary Tony Bennett in 1988-89. DOWN-LOW DUO Brown and now lone senior Brennan Cougill formed one of the top post duos in the Horizon League last season, combining to average 23 points and 15.2 rebounds per game. Brown (8.2) and Cougill (7.0) ranked second and fifth, respectively, among Horizon League rebound leaders last season. Cougill was second in the league in defensive rebounding while Brown led the Horizon League in offensive rebounding. The pair also takes advantage of trips to the free-throw line, combining to shoot 77.1 percent (155-201) from the charity stripe. Brown had an off night in the opener with just two points (0-7 FGs) but had seven AT GREEN BAY 72, CHICAGO ST 67 It wasn t always pretty, and it certainly was not fast, but the Green Bay men s basketball team was able to use a record number of made free throws and a career-high 31 points from sophomore Keifer Sykes to fight off visiting Chicago State and post a 72-67 season opening win at the Resch Center on Saturday afternoon. A Chicago native, Sykes topped the previous career high of 27 that he posted in the team s last regular season game of 2011-12, a win at UIC last February. He did so by scoring 22 points after halftime and connecting on a Green Bay record 17 free throws (17-19). As a team, the Phoenix also broke a 31-year old program record for free throws made, hitting 41- for-48 (85.4%). The Phoenix needed every one of the free throws and all of Sykes heroics to overcome 30 turnovers and escape a feisty Chicago State team that jumped out to a 13-1 lead at the first media timeout. Senior Brennan Cougill added 10 points for the Phoenix. LAST TIME OUT rebounds and two blocked shots. Cougill was the only Phoenix player besides Sykes to reach double figures with 10 points. MAKE THE FREEBIES The Phoenix ranked fourth in the Horizon League in free-throw percentage last season (70.6). Junior Kam Cerroni led the team at 82.6 percent, hitting 38-of-46. He made 34- of-39 in league play. Brown has led the team in made free throws in both of his first two seasons, and is a career 75.9 percent shooter from the line (195-257). KAM CAN Cerroni recovered from a tough freshman season (9-45) to have one of the best shooting seasons in Phoenix history. He hit 46.5 percent from long range (60-129), a percentage that ranks eighth alltime in the team s single-season chart. Cerroni led the Horizon League in three-point percentage and made half of his triples in league play (47-94). He was the lone conference player to make a three in every game, and entered 2012-13 having made a three in 19 games in a row dating back to Dec. 13, 2011. Cerroni snapped the streak in the opener (0-5), which was the first time since Nov. 25, 2011 he had failed to make a three in a game he had an attempt. I LL TAKE THAT Green Bay forced 27 turnovers and collected 14 steals in the opener. It was the third-most steals by a Phoenix team in program history. WELCOME BACK Green Bay welcomed junior Daniel Turner back to the court against Chicago State after he missed the final 16 games of 2011-12 with a torn ACL. Turner played 14 minutes off the bench against CSU and had four points (4-4 FTs), two assists, two steals and one rebound. PHOENIX DEBUTS The opener marked the Phoenix debut for three players - junior college transfer Sultan Muhammad and freshmen Jordan Fouse and Carrington Love. Muhammad was the lone Green Bay player to make a triple (1-4) and had six points and three rebounds in 15 minutes. Fouse grabbed a team-best 10 rebounds in his debut and added five points. He is the third freshmen in as many seasons to start the opener for Green Bay (Brown, Sykes). Love played eight minutes and had four points, an assist and a steal. Green Bay has had a player on the All- Newcomer Team in both of Wardle s first two seasons at the helm (Brown, Sykes). Phoenix Notes Team and Player Highs LOOKING TO JOIN THE CLUB Brown, with 739 points through two seasons, is on pace to join the program s 1,000-point club this season. With 259 more points, Brown will become the 25th player in program history to eclipse the mark. The last Phoenix player to join the 1,000-point club was Rahmon Fletcher, who also did so as a junior during the 2009-10 season. OTHER MILESTONES IN REACH Already the school s all-time leader, Brown needs 42 blocks to reach 200. Brown and Youngstown State senior Damian Eargle (207) are both on pace to break the current Horizon League record of 226 career blocks, set by Evansville s Dan Godfread in 1990. Brown also enters 2012-13 with 425 rebounds and is 68 rebounds away from becoming the 14th Phoenix player to grab 500 rebounds. He is on pace to join the top-10 in the category this season. With 31 more three-pointers, Cerroni will have knocked down his 100th career shot from long range. Cerroni will crack the top-10 on the team s all-time three-pointers made list with 79 more triples. Through 31 career games, Sykes is only 134 points shy of 500.
