CELEBRATING 19 YEARS OF SINGLES GOLF IN AMERICA Boston Chapter - American Singles Golf Association May 2012 Chapter News Wilmington, NC Beach Blast Diane Hunt and Donna Gustafson recently traveled to Wilmington, NC to golf with the Wilmington Chapter of the ASGA. They played golf at two beautiful golf course, the Masonboro and Beau Rivage. Both were interesting and challenging but enjoyable courses. The weather cooperated for us to have some fun evenings out on the beach which made for some beautiful views. The people at the Wilmington Chapter were gracious hosts and very friendly people. A special thanks to those who organized it and also to Anne Howell and Norma Tofaute who were kind enough to chauffeur us around. March Meeting The March membership meeting and social gathering at Seadogs Brewery in Woburn, was attended by 15 enthusiastic golfers. We had 6 non members attend for the first time and 2 have all ready joined ASGA. Nancy Hamson and Maryann Iannelli have filled March and April 's calendar with golfing events. Be sure to check out the meet up page for times and locations. Thompson CC has been confirmed for May 12th and at this point it is filled, but if interested, please add your name to the waiting list. There was further discussion on the Cape Cod weekend which is now closed to any further attendees. Tony Veligor brought up the topic of non members attending our events on a regular basis with out joining ASGA. It was recommended to charge a $5.00 fee after three events in the hopes it will attract new membership. Tony will follow up with more information. We have also set up a committee to research and develop our Chapter's ASGA web site for additional exposure and growth. Committee members are Nancy Hamson, Maryann Iannelli, Mike Lawton, Marilyn Healey, and Tony Veligor. It is a work in progress and we will have further information at a later date. Finally, our Chapter is starting a campaign to help out the 1st Tee for kids organization. It teaches and exposes young kids to the game of golf. It includes lessons, rules of the game and how to respect the game and one another. We are asking for all members to donate their old clubs, bags or any other equipment. We all have something hanging around that we no longer use. Please bring your donations to any event and leave with Tony Veligor. We will gather it all and donate to the local office. Nancy Hamson has put a lot of work into preparing a tentative schedule for this golf season. The following are the TENTA- TIVE events that are in the near future: May 13 South Shore Country Club May 19 Billerica Country Club We suggest that you keep track of the Boston ASGA Meetup web site for the most recent information and where you may sign up. Next meeting and location will be announced soon. Rules and More Rules Recording golf score higher than actually made. Q. In tournament golf, players keep each other's scores. The scorer is called the marker, and the marker keeps score for the competitor. In the 1968 Masters, Roberto De Vicenzo's final day round saw him shoot a 31 on the front nine and a 34 on the back nine for a score of 65. However, De Vicenzo's playing partner and marker on Sunday was, Tommy Aaron. Unfortunately Aaron put down a 4 for De Vicenzo on the 17th hole when the Argentinian actually had made a birdie 3. The submitted scorecard totaled a final round of 66 rather than the correct score of 65. The critical issue, a 65 would tie De Vicenzo with Bob Goalby forcing a Monday Masters playoff. It's the player's responsibility to ensure his scorecard is accurate before he signs it. De Vicenzo didn't. He signed an incorrect score card. What was the correct ruling? A. Both De Vicenzo and Tommy Aaron were disqualified for submitting an incorrect scorecard B. Tommy Aaron was awarded a 2 stroke penaly for recording an incorrect score on his competitor's score card, De Vicenzo's score was corrected by tournament officials to the correct score of 65. The Monday playoff was one of the most exciting in Masters' history. C. De Vicenzo s score of 66 stood as submitted. Tommy Aaron received no penalty. AND THE ANSWER IS: The answer is C. De Vicenzo's score stood as submitted. He came in second to Bob Goalby in the 1968 Masters. His incorrect scorecard cost him the a playoff opportunity. Rule 6-6.d applies. The competitor is responsible for the correctness of his score recorded for each hole on his score card. If he returns a score for any hole higher than actually taken, the score as returned stands. De Vicenzo finished second at the 1968 Masters and Bob Goalby was the winner. When De Vicenzo realized his mistake, he exclaimed "What a stupid I am!" Words that live on in golf history. De Vicenzo never won another major, although he did win the PGA Tour's Houston Open three weeks later. Tommy Aaron won the 1973 Masters, where, ironically, he caught a mistake on his scorecard made by his playing partner.

CELEBRATING 19 YEARS OF SINGLESGOLF IN AMERICA AMERICAN SINGLES GOLF ASSOCIATION MAY, 2012 Ireland Update Sixty (60) members have signed-up for the Ireland trip, July 20-30. We will spend three days in Dublin, three in Killarney and three in Limerick. You d fly into Dublin but return home from Shannon Airport near Limerick. When online registration is available, please have your roommate sign-up the same time you do. Details at www.singlesgolf.com/ Ireland Killarney Golf & Fish Club, Site of 2011 Irish Open and one of the courses we ll play in July. A tradition established years ago at our Memorial Day weekend event, members of the American Singles Golf Association have taken time out at our Saturday evening dinner to recognize members who have served in the Armed Forces. Memorial Day should be a time to remember, recognize and honor those who have fought for those things which we now take for granted, freedom being our utmost prize. This year, instead of just recognizing members during our event in Pinehurst, we re establishing a web page to honor our member veterans. Any veteran of any service era are invited to submit a brief bio about themselves and what involvement they had. We will post this in late May and send out an announcement to all members to go to the site and personally show your thanks for what they have contributed. We ask chapter leaders to send out notices to members asking them to go to www.singlesgolf.com/honor and complete a short form. This site will be live on May 10 and ready for contributions from our veteran members. Join Fellow Members in Pinehurst for Memorial Day Weekend! Event Dates: Thursday, May 24 Sunday, May 27, 2012 We re just about a month away from our annual Memorial Day Weekend and participation is already up to 150 members, well ahead of registration same time last year. If you ve never been to Pinehurst, think of it as America s Golf Headquarters. Site of the 51 Ryder Cup and past and future U. S. Opens, you ll feel the history the moment you walk into the Carolina Hotel. Was Donald Ross thinking of you when he planned his courses? Maybe, but your fellow members are thinking of you and hoping you ll attend. So find a roommate or we ll get you one. This reunion on Memorial Day Weekend has shown to be ASGA s largestattended event each year. Optional rounds on the day-of-arrival (Thursday at Pinehurst) as well as day-of-departure (Sunday at Tobacco Road Golf Club Rated #4 Public Course in the U. S. by Golf World magazine and a Top 100 Golf Digest) are being offered as well. A registration form is enclosed will be enclosed with this newsletter and www.singlesgolf.com/pinehurst will allow you to register online. Do it now before rooms sell-out! Did You Know??? Your chapter leaders have the ability to send out emails to its members using the national database. If a member joins on Monday, a chapter leader can send out a memo on Monday night. Is your chapter communicating using the service we provide and you pay for? Each chapter has an obligation to provide to members a monthly newsletter. Your chapter writes, ASGA National sends it out. This newsletter is also your PR piece to potential members. Communicating solely by email blurbs doesn t give leaders the opportunity to thank volunteers in a meaningful way. Failing to produce a newsletter will cause your chapter to lose your portion of the dues. This is a mandatory service that must happen each month. ASGA recently switched to a new email service, icontact.com. They're great to work with but they have strict rules. Recently, all of our Yahoo members were taken off the national list because when we sent out an email, more than.1% (yes, that's point one percent, or one-tenth of one percent) of Yahoo members complained that they were receiving spam from us. As you know, we don't send out spam, ham or lamb. So, just to make certain you are on the ASGA National email list, go to www.singlesgolf.com/addguest We know you're a member, but use this form as it gets you back on the list. Only members with Yahoo.com email addresses need to do this. Every ASGA chapter is born with a set of bylaws. The bylaws outline how chapters should be run. Your Board of Directors is essentially in control of how things are decided within your chapter. A chapter without bylaws is like playing golf without rules.
