Practice Question Time Based Which body structure helps the penguin stay warm as it dives into icy water? Answer: Team Name:

Q1 Time Based The diagram shows what happens to rock materials as they interact with air and water. Letters A, B, C, and D show some rock materials at different places on Earth s surface. Part A: Which force causes the rock materials to move from A to B? Part B: Which letter shows the process of deposition? Part A: Part B:

Q2 Time Based Select all of the correct ways to find the area of the triangle below. There is not enough information to find the area of the triangle Count each whole square for a total area of 28 square units Count each whole square and each half square by adding two half squares together to make one whole square for a total area of 32 square units Multiply the side lengths for a total area of 64 square units Multiply the side lengths then divide the product by two since a triangle is half of a square for an area of 32 square units

Q3 Time Based The National Inventors Hall of Fame is having their 44 th Annual Induction Ceremony at the Smithsonian in Washington DC. The coordinator is planning to spend $100 on each table. They spend 1 of the cost per table on the 4 tablecloth, and plan to spend 1 of the remaining funds on napkins. How much 5 money does the coordinator plan to spend on napkins for each table? Answer

Q4 Time Based The diagram above shows a solid piece of chocolate before it was melted and the same piece of chocolate after it was melted into a liquid. Part A: Which property of the piece of chocolate is the same in the two diagrams? Part B: Which form of energy is found in food? Part A: Part B:

Q5 Performance Task The regular season for professional baseball is 162 games. A player was at bat 3 times in each game, and he played 2/3 of the games. Part A: How many times was the player at bat during the season? Part B: The player hit 0.250, which means he got a hit 25% of the time, or once in every four at bats. How many hits did he get during the year? Part A Part B Team Name:

Q6 Time Based Sonia liked to balance things. She balanced 3 pencil sharpeners and 2 one-gram blocks with a 100-gram weight and another one-gram block. She let x stand for the weight of one pencil sharpener, and she claimed that x=30 grams. Was she correct? If not, how much did each pencil sharpener weigh? Was she correct? If not, what is the weight of each sharpener? Team Name:

Q7 Time Based The picture above shows the Earth rotating. What is the total number of complete rotations that Earth makes in 2 weeks? Answer

Q8 Time Based Fill in the blanks. Use the following numbers: 1, 0, 3, 7 = 43

Q9 Performance Task Lockheed Martin would like to offer you a job. They will hire you for ten days. They will pay you one of three ways: Option A: $1.00 the first day, $2.00 the second day, $3.00 the third day and so on. Option B: 10 the first day, 20 the second day, 40 the third day, and each day twice the amount of the day before. Option C: $6.00 for each day for all ten days. Which way would pay you the most? Write your answer below. Use pictures, numbers, or words to defend your answer.

Q10 Engineering Design Challenge Your challenge is to design and build a roller coaster with the given materials that will successfully get your passenger car (marble) to the disembarking platform (clear cup) at a safe speed. Challenge Materials: 3 foam tubes, 1 roll of masking tape, 1 marble, 1 clear cup, 2 foam cups Approved Supply Bucket Materials: scissors, markers, and tape measure Criteria: Roller coasters can be composed of any combination of hills and loops A qualifying hill must have a clear increase and decrease in height and must be at least 2 cm above the surface. Only hills that begin and end on the same surface will be given points. Teams will perform their own measurements, however final measurement for all hills must be verified by the proctor. Measurement will be from the surface to the highest point of the hill (bottom of the foam tube). Refer to the diagram on the right. Groups may use their table, chairs, and the floor as a building area. The floor behind the team s table (the area farthest from the stage) is the designated floor space for each team. Chairs cannot be placed on top of the tables. Foam tubes may be cut as needed however you will only receive your initial 3 tubes. Students must alert their proctor when they are ready for a qualifying run. The proctor will set up the tape to measure the ending speed as follows: A safe ending speed will be determined by the amount of movement of the clear cup. Proctors will place the clear cup so that the black line aligns to the end of the team s coaster. In order to measure the amount of movement of the cup, proctors should place a piece of masking tape at the end of the clear cup so that the end of the tape aligns with the end of the cup. This will mark the starting position. The proctor will then measure the distance from the starting position to the end of the cup to determine how much the cup moved once the marble arrived at the disembarking station. The distance will be measured to the nearest ½ cm. Tape may need to be moved during each new qualifying run. Proctors will release the marbles during each qualifying run. Groups will have 3 attempts at a qualifying run. Students will track data (proctors will verify for accuracy) for all three runs and choose which run they will use for final scoring by circling the appropriate table. Hill measurement: Measurement of safe ending speed: Scoring: 10 points for a successfully completed run. A successfully completed run is when the marble runs the entire length of the track without falling off at any point and enters the disembarking platform (clear cup). 20 points for every loop on a successful run. 1 point for every 2 cm for every hill on a successful run. Engineering Design Process Flow Map: o 5 points for the correct use of energy and 5 points for the correct use of motion o 5 points for accurately explaining why your plan will successfully meet the challenge criteria 10 bonus points will be awarded to the team whose platform moves the least distance. If there is a tie in distance or if multiple teams who get their marble in their cup without moving it, all qualifying teams will be awarded bonus points. Successful Run: Y or N 1 st Qualifying Run 2 nd Qualifying Run 3rd Qualifying Run Loops Hills Loops Hills Loops Hills Amount Amount Amount Height(s): List the height of each hill in the box N/A Hill 1: Hill 2: Hill 3: Hill 4: Hill 5: Height(s): List the height of each hill in the box N/A Hill 1: Hill 2: Hill 3: Hill 4: Hill 5: Height(s): List the height of each hill in the box N/A Hill 1: Hill 2: Hill 3: Hill 4: Hill 5:
