Ceccarelli FUTURE/PRESENT Role of Mechanical Systems and MMS Enhancements in knowledge and Technology needs for human life and industrial production have changed and evolved over time, also because of the evolution of systems, requiring innovation that have brought to Mechatronic design and operation of modern systems, Whatever Electronics, Informatics, Telecommunications and so on, will be enhanced and expanded in Mechatronics Technology, Mechanical Design will be always needed since a woman/man will always live and interact with the environment on the basis of mechanical phenomena of the human nature.

IFToMM and its Olympiad 9 2 Motivations and goals for SIOMMS SIOMMS: Student International Olympiad on Mechanism and Machine Science a competition context like in many other disciplines to challenge the student skill levels and to promote engineering interest in MMS The Olympic features are the bases of SIOMMS in terms of international environment with friendship frames and world competition. Goals for Olympiad at its foundation in 2009: - To create an IFToMM event fully dedicated to students within period of formation - To attract young colleagues to IFToMM on teaching, research and practice of MMS - To promote visibility of IFToMM among engineering students and young generations - To stress the significance of MMS as engineering science of wide interests and application fields the program of SIOMMS event with keynote lectures by distinguished figures in MMS and IFToMM leaders to meet each other.

In the individual competition the winners were the students from Cheboksary (Russia) and Shanghai (China) since they got the same final score; the second place (silver medal) was for the student from Shanghai (China), and the third place (bronze medal) was for the student from Volgograd (Russia)

18 M. Ceccarelli 5 Conclusions SIOMMS is the IFToMM Olympiad on MMS that is today organized with its third event because of a growing success of attention and participation. IFToMM is the international federation that made MMS very successful and wide spread in the second half of the 20 th century and it can have still and influential role in guiding and coordinating future developments in MMS for better shape the safety and quality of mankind. Engineering and its products in knowledge, education, innovation, product developments, with IFToMM specific interest in MMS, pays and important role in the mankind welfare and developments and the young generations must be trained since the early stages of their formation to recognize and to be aware of the significance and impact of their future individual work within a world frame. Therefore SIOMMS is part of the vision of IFToMM!
